A Modern day retelling of the Book of Hosea Houston Rocket's star player, Bad Boy Joshua Keys, and wife Bella Keys have weathered quite a few storms. Her childhood trauma and poor choices resulting from it. His fake paternity suits, fights on and off the basketball court, fights that always somehow seemed to center around Bella. Then there were the legal fees the payouts, and the groupies. They made it through all of that. But when Bella brings home a child by another man, even one that Joshua truly adores, this couple can't quite seem to overcome that. When Bella believes that the love Joshua once had for her is now transferred to her son, she takes the five year old boy and flees to the last place on earth Joshua would ever think to find them. It’s been five years since his wife left him and everything has changed. Joshua is retired from pro ball now and he doesn't go by the moniker, 'Bad Boy' anymore. Joshua Keys has found God, and media hounds across the city of Houston are scratching their heads at Bad Boy’s transformation. When Joshua receives a series of prophetic dreams alerting him to his family's whereabouts, he thinks this is about Bella that she has returned to her old destructive habits. But a devastating tropical storm is brewing off the Gulf of New Mexico. Hurricane Katrina is coming, and this storm is sure to be a killer. Can Joshua find his family in time? Even if he does find them, can a man, even one that has been forgiven as much as Joshua has been, possibly find it in his heart to forgive again?

It literally speaks to you if you've ever dealt with abandonment or lust or sexual brokenness or drugs. Do I need to continue? It will bring you healing. I cried, I laughed and I felt like I was in a movie filled with action, drama, and love. This should be a movie or play! One of the greatest books of all time. Plato has The Republic but Catrina has Passing Through Water. If I give anyone homage and rank them with Plato they are clearly a great writer of our time!

By Wordlover I have never in my life enjoyed a fiction book as much as I enjoyed Mrs. Sparkman's "Passing Through Water". The narrative has great character development and moves at just the right pace. As a Christian who typically finds christian fiction (and fiction in general) corny and unbelievable, this was a breath of fresh air. The challenges that the main characters were dealing with were relatable, incredibly relevant and resonates with today's extended nuclear family dynamics, as families wrestle with the results of children from previous relationships, intimate relationships outside of marriage, and the residue from various forms of abuse. Sparkman elevates beautifully the modern picture of brokenness, and then pivots to offer redemption and grace through the character of Joshua. But its not easy. As in life, redemption and forgiveness often is a struggle and a process for those giving and receiving it. It involves battling ego, pride and all kinds of emotions. How about that? An accurate picture of humanity in a christian fiction narrative! WhodaThunkIt?! I loved it!I cannot wait until the next part of this story continues! Why couldn't it all have been in one volume?! I hate waiting-yet I do it, reluctantly but anxiously!Catrina Sparkman is a star on the rise. In fact,"star" is too tiny a word to describe this writer. Someone said this once about Toni Morrison. Someone said this about Alice Walker. Someone said this once about BeBe Moore Campbell. Someone said this once about Mildred D. Taylor. Add Mrs. Sparkman to THAT list. She is just that good! You heard it here first!

Excited to read this author's first work of fiction and it was not a disappointment. I became engrossed with the story from page one until the end. Aside from the believable characters (dialogue was on point), the tense backdrop (would've have loved more nail biting moments), the story moves smoothly from one scene to the next. You find yourself cheering, pleading, and praying for the characters. What caught me off guard was the heart tugging reminder that one should never cease to pray for one's family. I found myself pausing and praying for my family's safety. The author has done what a lot of Christian fiction novels fail to do (my opinion) - through fictional characters and story - she not only teaches how to walk out your faith, but how to intercede for your loved ones. This novel is a book club must read and discussion. Oh ...... the ending!!!!!! Bring on Book 2!!!!!
