Six people make a trip to a remote cabin in the middle of nowhere. Dr. Linda Hamilton, their psychologist, is there waiting for their arrival. Karen and Victoria are conjoined twins from birth and soon will have extreme surgery to separate knowing that only one will live. Mr. Smith is the second patient to arrive. His Native American name is “Eagle Eyes.” Throughout his life he has been mistreated by the medical community and faced discrimination at every turn. Not even changing his name has helped. Randy will not be there physically. He’s a morbidly obese man weighing close to 1000 pounds. His condition has made him bed ridden for the majority of his adult life. He will participate in the group through his computer. Didi is a young pregnant woman that instantly livens up any room with her presence. Never shy to show off her stomach to anyone and everyone. It’s the one thing that she’s most proud of. Although behind her cheerful facade lies a deep dark secret. When the truth is unveiled their lives are turned upside down. James Tarver wants no part of the therapy group but was forced into it by his family. He was born a loser and in his mind will die one. Many times he wanted to get in his car and leave, but a strange feeling overcame him which caused him to continue. All of their frustrations and fantasies have trapped the group in a desolate labyrinth without any way to escape its clutches. Even the Doctor is not immune to it. Finally James and Didi decide that together they will face their fears and seek out that magical key which will permit them to return to reality.” This is where “Heaven’s Tears” begins.

Although, there is one basic character for the main plot, much of it focuses around them all in one way or another. There is Didi, diagnosed with HIV, who is upbeat and a constant source of fun for the group. However, once her secret is revealed some of the group turn away. Randy is an obese man of over 1,000 pounds who can only participate through a computer monitor. Karen and Victoria who are conjoined twins planning on surgery to separate them, knowing only one can live. John Smith is a Native American. His given name was Eagle Eyes but was changed by his father, thinking it was best for him to fit in. This is a source of constant agony for John. Then there is the well know therapist known for her unique counseling techniques. Last but not least is our main character, James. He has an inoperable brain tumor and an attitude to match. The outcome for all of these characters will surprise you. The author's style is excellent; easy to read and captivating. You can picture the characters easily with Basante's descriptive nature. The plot is mind bending. If you think you know what is going to happen next, think again. There are more twists in this plot than on a mountain road but like rubber to the road, it holds your interest. The author, Louis Basante, was raised in Buenos Aires Argentina. In the early 1980's he immigrated to the United States to further his career. Mr. Basante's hope was to have his audience care deeply for the characters when writing Heaven's Tears. The book took him a little over 3 years to write. This book was a good read and I would definitely recommend it to most readers. However, if you are the type who gets depressed easily this book is not for you.Reviewer: Connie Medak, Allbook Reviews
