I would have rather had a story about Jake, but I liked Daniel in the previous book, so I was eager to read his story. Unfortunately, the description left out a major detail -- the kid. I don't think the author could have written a more unlikable kid if she tried and even before he became a total brat he was never very likable as a character and because he was always there, there was really no romance in the book. A couple of quick sex scenes where they didn't even spend the night together and that was it. It's unfortunate because both of the main characters were very likable (except for Dan's behavior towards his son -- letting him be cruel and disrespectful to a man he claimed to love and doing nothing about his behavior) -- if you got rid of Lucas and added some romance it could have been a great book. Unfortunately, it doesn't come close to being as good as the other books in the series (Grey and Shannon had to deal with several kids and their book had a lot more romance to it than this one did with only one kid who was older).

Daniel Carter knows this to be true because he lives it and it scares him to no end; being a single father and a lone wolf shifter he is always a careful man. In a world where packs are everywhere being a lone wolf is getting harder and harder to do. Yet being in a pack and giving all encompassing allegiance to an Alpha, well that is not in his cards to play. Daniel is crafty, dedicated and he is not short on ingenuity for sure. What this man is short on is faith and trust when it comes to those he loves nothing absolutely anything he won’t do to keep them safe. Trevor Armstrong used to see the world in two perspectives. These days it is down to one by no fault of his own or was it his fault. Some days it feels like he is in a bubble and in that bubble he can hear, taste, feel and see only the bad stuff like it is giant personalized piñata filled with everything bad that he has experienced. Peoples touch and voices can’t seem to penetrate the piñata it all comes across as a constant wack …wack…wack until he is ready to explode. Yet when he meets Daniel he can’t stop trying to be near him the hurt and fear and noise quiets down. Why? He does not know but when the opportunity to take shelter with him appears he is smart enough to go where it is safe. Daniel has so many issues to consider in his life but keeping Trevor near is not one of them. In life you get dealt stuff that you just have to deal with in the best way possible….sometimes you just have to survive until you are strong enough to thrive. Sometimes a safe haven turns into love and trust. Through all the pain and fear you will find with every turn of the page a wonderful love story where two broken men build a stronghold of a new family including a bunch of new friends who will always have their back. Sometimes in life the strongest thing you can do is ask for help.

And while this is a great story, I was left wanting just a little bit more from it. For me, the step outside of the Smooth Rock Falls pack made this have a different feel. And yet at the same time, most of the gang we’ve meet is in and out of the story and we get a little better insight into Quinn. I think with the story lines of Trevor's abuse, Daniel's child and Daniel's old shifters military squad still in harms way, Daniel's job for the council, that no one element got the focus it should have. But some of these elements do seem to set up the next books in the series. And I love that.Like all of the rest of the series, this story is about a single couple, Daniel and Trevor. Trevor and Daniel's relationship builds slowly and sweetly. Trevor’s abuse at the hand of his ex Alpha leads to trust issue with Alpha Declan. To complicate things there is Daniel's disabled child. And what a brat child Lucas is. He doesn't start off that way, but when the bratty behavior starts, I wanted to tell him to knock it off. And that is one of the things I love about this author's writing, her characters are engaging, they become real to you as you read. Now with the introduction of Daniel’s military friends, I would like to see more of them. Especially Gunny’s and Pay’s story, I’m hoping that it comes soon. With all of the above said, over all I did enjoy the story. The writing was as well done as the rest of the series. So I am once again looking forward to the next book.I would like to thank the author for letting me read a copy of her story in exchange for an honest review.
