8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Needs more focus on current rules, less on the history! Web address to 'Online Index' is wrong! By Dean Head I consider myself kind of a personal finance nerd, but I found this very difficult to slog through. In particular, Ch2 reads more like a history of the changes to the financial aid system. Word of advice to the authors: I understand that later editions are just 'pile-ones' to the existing material... but if I buy the 2016 edition... I really don't care what the rules were like in 2002 or 2009! It bogs down the text and makes it VERY confusing. Some careful pruning of the older material would go a long way to making this more readable.[4/12/16 update]I am dropping this down a star, because not only is there no index, the weblink they provide for the 'Online Index'[...]re-directs to a generic page of college advice at the Princeton Review site.Poor!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Where is the index? By MCL Paying for College is a fascinating book, but although it promises an online index (pp vii &330), the suggested link won’t get you to one. It is needed: the table of contents only lists chapter titles, and one chapter is 70 pages long. The book appears to be very knowledgeable about financial aid, but it occasionally offers ridiculous suggestions about investment. For example (p 26: “…we recommend no-load or low-load (mutual) funds that charge a sales commission of 4.5% or less.” Why would anyone go with a fund that takes 4.5% commission off the top when there are a number of high performing mutual funds that do not charge commissions?

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. I have bought the 2014 and now the 2016 version ... By tinacap I have bought the 2014 and now the 2016 version of this book. The same problem with the 2014 where the link to the update posted under "Keeping you Up-to-Date does not work, except for the 2016 version also promises and index along with the update. I just wrote to the author directly since I got nowhere on Princeton Reviews website and asked him for help. I hope he can give me the proper link. Without the update link, nor the index, I can not see rating this book more than 3 stars.
