Misleading Title By RainmanRD If you want a book that does an outstanding job of detailing the evolution of the iron and steelmaking process and technology, then this is the book for you. (There are several excellent passages that makes a reader understand what it must have been like to work in the mills at various periods). I doubt there is a more comprehensive treatment of the subject anywhere. If you are looking for a complete story of the City of Pittsburgh and it's relationship to steel, you will get some information here (including a good treatment about the geography and geology of the region that benefited the development of the industry, and lots of fascinating facts about how dominant the region once was industrially), but you will be disappointed. While the title makes it sound like it's about the city of Pittsburgh, after reading most of the book (more about that in a bit), I'd estimate that 10% of the content (at most) is about Pittsburgh and the region, 10% about Andrew Carnegie and his empire, and 80% about the technology of steelmaking. I have degrees in both Chemistry and Engineering, and work experience in steel mills, and I still had to skim numerous sections of the book because of extremely in-depth technical descriptions of the science and process of steelmaking that made my head spin. A more accurate title would be "Technology of Steel-making"

If you aren't familiar, you should read it. The author's knowledge is awesome. If you want to know how Pittsburgh became the city of steel, do yourself a favor and read it. The research for this book must have taken many hours. Best book on this subject that you'll ever read. Read the reviews on the back cover and you'll be convinced,

By Christopher Holland This is the best book I have ever read on how the steel industry developed, especially in Pittsburg. It explains a lot and it gives a very good explanation of why Carnegie Steel was so successful. I think the author is generous about the role that Carnegie himself played - I think he was a very lucky man, he happened to be in the right place at the right time and was able to use the talents of some unique individuals, especially Bill Jones, who I think is the central figure in this story, and to a lesser extent, Henry Frick. Frick wasn't the friendliest man on the planet but that is another story. A comtemporary of Carnegie who knew him well said about him that he gave away a lot of money that he hadn't done a lot to earn. Carnegie's own autobiograpy (published after his death) has been called a pack of lies and shows the vanity of a man with a very high opinion of himself. A quote from Bill Jones to his protege, Charlie Schwab that is not in this story but that could be is that things ran more smoothly when Carnegie was away (as he often was)
