About the Author Hadley is Chief Scientist at RStudio and Adjunct Professor of Statistics at Rice University. He is interested in building better tools for data science. His work includes R packages for data analysis (ggvis, dplyr, tidyr); packages that make R less frustrating (lubridate for dates, stringr for strings, httr for accessing web APIs, rvest for webscraping); and that make it easier to do good software development in R (roxygen2, testthat, devtools). He is also a writer, educator, and frequent speaker promoting more accessible, more effective and more fun data analysis.

Excellent By Dimitri Shvorob I have not built, and am not planning to build, an R package, so please take this review with a grain of salt: my “testing” was not in-depth. However, the impression I got is of a high-quality, information-packed, systematic reference, which goes far, far beyond the (book) sources that I have seen before – namely, “Art of R Programming” by Norman Matloff, and Hadley Wickham's own, and similarly impressive, “Advanced R”. I think that the book would have benefited from an opening or maybe thread-through-chapters walkthrough exercise – the “helloworld” package, if you will – but feel that it clearly deserves five stars as it is.

The book contents areavailable for free online, but I think this book was worth the money. I hadalready created a package and started following the book's contents onlinebefore purchasing it, but I still think it was worth it.Most of the book gives instructions specific to RStudio users, but this isn't arequirement (I don't use RStudio). It is probably best for relative beginners.Hadley's "devtools" package is also extensively used and makes a lot of packagecreation/maintenance/building/etc. much easier.Some of the book gives "best practices" and shows you the minimal requirementsfor packages. The chapters on "Vignettes" and "Testing" are very helpful. Thechapter on "Git and Github" is really basic and can be skipped if you have anyexperience with either. Hadley also introduces using "Travis" for automaticpackage checking, but mainly just links to the Travis website.Overall, I would recommend this for anyone looking to create their own packages,even if it won't be uploaded to CRAN at any time.
4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Demystifies R packages By JohnInPDX This book does a great job of demystifying R packages, a great way to organized and distribute R code. Up to now, documentation on R packages was highly detailed and complete but apparently written with the serious R programmer/developer in mind. This book provides a user-friendly (and by no means superficial!) introduction to packages, one that bridges the gap between knowing very little and knowing enough to easily navigate the standard R doc. Indeed, as the author suggests, I have now begun to regularly organize reusable functions into packages, which in turn has encouraged me to design them in more general ways, which has then led to my discovering more and better ways to write R code, thereby more fully leveraging the power of the R platform.Incidentally, Hadley Wickham is a godsend for the R community, IMHO, for this book as well as for the package development and pedagogy he does the rest of the time. Thanks HW!
