About the Author TIM JEPSON has been a passionate and lifelong devotee of Italy. He has written 15 books on the countries around the Mediterranean, as well as numerous articles for the Daily Telegraph, Vogue, Condé Nast Traveller, and other publications. For National Geographic he has written the following guides in the National Geographic Traveler series: Florence & Tuscany, Naples & Southern Italy, Piedmont & Northwest Italy, and Sicily. Now based in London, Jepson continues to visit the Mediterranean regularly. As well as having spent much time on land, he has cruised along the beautiful coasts of the Mediterranean.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Imperfect packaging of a valuable resource By J. Tant This book is made for the cruise passenger. That isn't to say other travelers won't get utility out of this book, but the focus is undoubtedly on those who have awakened in their stateroom, look out the window, and see a new coastline every day of their vacation.This focus is evident on the structure of the book. It doesn't go into exquisite detail of the various sites and attractions. Instead it is organized by region, and then brief overviews of each region and the attractions found therein. The overviews themselves don't read all that differently than the guidebooks you may be provided when you get on the ship. The value add here, to be clear, is the freedom to plan your own itinerary without being funneled into a particular tour provider. As it's not unheard of for tour companies to pay to, ahem, encourage cruise lines to recommend them, something like this helps you to get with a provider you are comfortable with, or for that matter strike out on your own.I do wish the book were produced somewhat differently. The book is traditionally bound, with pages of high quality paper and marker covers that allow you to save a particular place in the book for easy reference. The downside is that maps and diagrams within the book sometimes span two pages, the middle of which disappear within the binding of the book.Also make no mistake - this is a relatively large book, owing to the wide range of countries and sites it covers. It's probably not something you are going to want to carry with you while ashore. I'm a fan of making photocopies of the relevant pages, but again, this is where the binding of the book is a weakness. It's hard to get it to lie flat on a photocopier.So the takeaway is that this is a book that offers you resources to tailor your own shore visits, which is good in and of itself. Sadly, those resources are sometimes tied up in a somewhat unwieldy presentation. It's still a valuable resource, if only to get you started on more in-depth research of those sites you want to see that may not be a part of a cruise ship's offerings.
3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Lovely pictures By Reader527 A disappointment. I thought Rick Steves' Mediterranean Cruise Ports a more useful book. This book barely touches on the sites; if you have to choose between one site and another, there isn't enough information to help make that determination. Also, if you've decided not to take any of your ship's excursions, this book isn't helpful for making your way into town, how long it takes, etc. I purchased this book because it was newer but was disappointed as I said. Had I browsed through the book at a bookstore prior to making an online purchase, I probably would have never bought it. It does have some very lovely pictures, though.

Friedman We're taking a cruise from Rome to the Greek Isles later this year, so I've been researching Mediterranean cruise ports to plan our daily adventures. I already had the Rick Steves book on these ports, so I thought I'd also try the National Geographic version to add to my info choices.This being a National Geographic Traveler publication, it's important to note that the photos, maps, and diagrams "travel first class" all the way! I wish every travel guide had graphics like these. The Rick Steves guide, though chock-full of information, relies heavily on word descriptions. The National Geo book expertly conveys lots of information graphically in a way that allows for easier info gathering while on the go.A complaint I have about many of the travel guides is that they're big and heavy. You really don't want to have to carry them around. Although the Nat Geo book is about half as thick as the Steves guide, it's also built to be durable in both binding and pages; thus its weight is about equal. Better to leave these books in your ship cabin or hotel room and consult them to plan your days ahead. Or, do what I often do: just tear out the pages you need and carry those with you each day.This travel guide covers the following regions and ports:Coastal Spain: Barcelona, Malaga & Granada, Valencia, Balearic IslandsFrench Riviera & Provence: Marseille & Provence, Cannes & St-Tropez, Nice & Around, MonacoItalian Riviera & Tuscany: Genoa & the Coast, Florence, Pisa, Lucca, Siena, San GimignanoRome & Naples: Rome, Bay of Naples, Capri, Amalfi CoastSicily, Malta, & Puglia: Sicily, Malta, PugliaVenice & the Adriatic: Venice, Split, Dubrovnik, More Ports to Visit on the AdriaticAthens & the Islands: Athens, The Peloponnesus, The Islands, CreteTurkey: Istanbul, EphesusOne of my upcoming ports is Mykonos, and it's not mentioned anywhere in this book.Another one of my ports, Santorini, is covered in a tiny section of about 250 words (I counted, roughly), with no photos or graphics. In the restaurant appendix, there is one listing for Santorini.So, if you're going to Mykonos and Santorini, this book pretty much ignores you.There are about 14 good pages on Athens via the port of Piraeus, but, really, you can find tons of good travel guides covering major European cities in much greater depth than that. And there are 4 good pages on Ephesus via the port of Kusadasi, Turkey, but they contain not that much more info than you can get in your daily cruise newsletter.Sections on France and Italy seem stronger, but, again, not much hard info.To me, the biggest value that comes along with this book is its attractiveness as a first-stage research guide--for an overview--in trip planning, and in having it at home as a keepsake that you can show to others to describe a little about your trip without boring them with your own photos.Although I didn't love the Rick Steves book either, it's loaded with much more information about port, transportation, and excursion details than this travel guide has. Just a 3 out of 5. Sorry, but it really leaves you wanting for more.
