I have read all of Marie Bostwick's novels, even the ones that are no longer in print. I love her books. I have all of them. Her books are guaranteed to keep you in your comfy armchair and read till the last page has been turned. Her writing keeps getting better and better every time she churns out another book.This one is not one of her Cobbled Court books, which is to my surprise. I depend on the Cobbled Court series to get me through another busy season of raising two ornery kids, but this book is even better. It is about Lucy coming home to Nilson's Bay, WI, since her older sister, Alice, died unexpectedly. As part of Alice's will, Lucy has to live in the cottage that she has spent her entire adult life running away from for eight weeks before she can sell it and go back to Washington, D.C. where her boss just became the elected president of the US.Lucy reluctantly stays in Nilson's Bay for the required eight weeks to finish out her requirements before heading to the White House to resume the frantic pace of her harried life as an campaign manager. She meets up with the FOA girls, who happened to be Friends of Alice as the town dubbed them and with their help, she learns how to quilt. And along the way, she learns more about her sister, who left a gaping hole in folks' lives than Lucy has ever realized. She realized that she doesn't have the sole right to miss her sister as Alice has befriended everyone in Nilson's Bay, even her own lawyer, Peter, who also happened to be Lucy's high school crush.This is a lovely novel about a woman who was forced to take several steps back to step away from a busy and storied career to realize that life is more than just winning campaigns. It is also a great story of how a woman finds the small joys in life are actually the big things as well.I rely on Marie Bostwick to produce these gems of a novel and if I have to be really honest, this one is my favorite yet.

Branfield A truly unforgettable journey of grace and healing, The Second Sister by Marie Bostwick is a very emotional novel of family, forgiveness and friendship. It is also a heartfelt and engaging story about making peace with the past and letting go of mistakes in order to move on and embrace the future.Lucy Toomey has spent her entire adult life avoiding her small hometown in Wisconsin. Despite her older sister Alice’s numerous pleas to visit, she has not returned home in the eight years since her parents’ deaths. When she learns that Alice been hospitalized and is in serious condition, she drops everything to rush to her sister’s side, but unfortunately Alice passes away while Lucy is still en route. Planning to leave as soon she settles her sister’s estate, Lucy is stunned to discover that the terms of Alice’s will stipulate she live in the family home for eight weeks in order to inherit or the house will go to a local animal rescue. She reluctantly remains in town where she eventually discovers startling truths about herself, her sister and their somewhat complicated relationship. Lucy also unexpectedly finds friendship and, quite possibly, love but will this be enough to change her mind about leaving the small close-knit community for good?Lucy lives life at a frantic pace and she allows herself very little time to think about anything other than her demanding career. Her childhood was spent in the shadow of her older, more accomplished and outgoing sister and she could never live up to her father’s expectations. In the aftermath of the tragic accident that left Alice mentally impaired, Lucy was overcome with guilt at the events of the day and she could not wait to leave her unhappy memories behind. Although she has achieved a measure of professional success, her personal life is devoid of friendship or love.
