When the Adjutant General's Office published Raphael Thian's "notes" on U.S. military geography in 1880, it produced an invaluable research tool for generations of military historians to come. In this single documented reference volume, Chief Clerk Thian traced the confusing mutations through which the divisions, departments, and districts of the Army's command had evolved since 1813.
The volume is divided into three parts, beginning with the names of the United States Army Continental Commands, the date and authority for their creation, location of the headquarters, geographical changes and discontinuances, and other details including the geographical boundaries embracing each division, department, and district. Part II is filled with background information on states and territories, and Part III lists the maps contained in The Military Atlas of the United States.
The Addenda to this edition expand and update Thian's work. Notes made by Francis B. Heitman to keep his personal copy current are included, as is the Memorandum published by the government in 1906. This addition lists all changes from 1898 through 1905.

It's not the kind of thing you sit down and read from front to end, but rather a research work, containing an abundance of valuable information about the United States Army from the opening to the closing of the Western frontier, and beyond. If you are interested in this kind of minutiae, then this is a book for you. Wish there were more like it in publication, because I've seen some of what is out there at historical societies. What you have in this volume is, as the cover page explains, a detailed listing of "date of creation, names of commanders, and geographical boundaries" of military divisions, departments, districts, and reconstruction districts from 1818 to 1880, with addendum taking you beyond that date. For example, if you are interested in the Department of the Missouri, you will find that it was established November 9, 1861 "to consist of the States of Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Arkansas, and that portion of Kentucky west of the Cumberland River." On November 19, 1861, Maj. Gen. Henry W. Halleck was appointed commander of the department with headquarters in Saint Louis, Mo.The entries then take you through the changes made to and development of the department, areas added or subtracted, new commanders appointed. In May 9, 1866, showing a westward shift in focus, "Headquarters established at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas (G.O. No. 56, Department of the Missouri, 1866). In 1890, the final entry for the department tells us that it consists of the "States of Missouri, Kansas, and Illinois, and the Territories of Colorado and New Mexico."If you are looking for details of military forts and outposts, or detailed orders of battle, you will not find that information here. However, the information this volume does contain is invaluable for researchers, or just for western history buffs, or even those wishing to write realistic fiction. Highly recommended.
