SCENE I. A Grove before the Temple of Diana. IPHIGENIA. Beneath your leafy gloom, ye waving boughs Of this old, shady, consecrated grove, As in the goddess' silent sanctuary, With the same shudd'ring feeling forth I step, As when I trod it first, nor ever here Doth my unquiet spirit feel at home. Long as the mighty will, to which I bow, Hath kept me here conceal'd, still, as at first, I feel myself a stranger. For the sea Doth sever me, alas! from those I love, And day by day upon the shore I stand, My soul still seeking for the land of Greece. But to my sighs, the hollow-sounding waves Bring, save their own hoarse murmurs, no reply. Alas for him! who friendless and alone, Remote from parents and from brethren dwells; From him grief snatches every coming joy Ere it doth reach his lip. His restless thoughts Revert for ever to his father's halls, Where first to him the radiant sun unclos'd The gates of heav'n; where closer, day by day, Brothers and sisters, leagu'd in pastime sweet, Around each other twin'd the bonds of love. I will not judge the counsel of the gods;

Review 'This translation is a matchless example of German poetry rendered into English by a master. Now sixty years old, and published for the first time, it is remarkable for its immediacy and urgency - It could have been written today.' Martin Swales, Professor Emeritus of German, University of London

It may be an old translation, but it is nevertheless powerful. Anna Swanwick not only translated but was able to do so in iambic pentameter. I marvel at anyone who can do so. Of course almost all of Shakespeare's plays were in IP, and that is part of the reason he "created" so many words (in order to fit the 10 syllables in each line).The plot is well known, but is changed in places by Goethe. One must read it slowly as some sentences are "inverted" or have unusual word structures. If you are not familiar with the characters, the internet will provide all the background needed.Euripides wrote two plays about Iphigenia: I. in Aulis and I. in Tauris. Both are excellent plays full of drama and pathos. Sadly I have never seen them as free ebooks.

One exeption: instead of refering to a European spirit, Goethe's works at this time are to be related to the 'Klassik' period, strongly based on the resumption of the ancient Greek, Roman and renaissance ideas of humanity.I follow as well the given further recommendations of other plays, stressing esp. - e.g. - Gerhard Hauptmann, and adding, e.g., Friedrich Schiller, "Intrigue and Love", and Bertold Brecht, "The Good Person of Szechwan"!(Pls. don't imply to my comment I'd be focused too much on German drama and literature: I strongly appreciate as well e.g. plays of Tennessee Williams and Edward Albee, just to name some American writers.)
