SCENE I. A Grove before the Temple of Diana. IPHIGENIA. Beneath your leafy gloom, ye waving boughs Of this old, shady, consecrated grove, As in the goddess' silent sanctuary, With the same shudd'ring feeling forth I step, As when I trod it first, nor ever here Doth my unquiet spirit feel at home. Long as the mighty will, to which I bow, Hath kept me here conceal'd, still, as at first, I feel myself a stranger. For the sea Doth sever me, alas! from those I love, And day by day upon the shore I stand, My soul still seeking for the land of Greece. But to my sighs, the hollow-sounding waves Bring, save their own hoarse murmurs, no reply. Alas for him! who friendless and alone, Remote from parents and from brethren dwells; From him grief snatches every coming joy Ere it doth reach his lip. His restless thoughts Revert for ever to his father's halls, Where first to him the radiant sun unclos'd The gates of heav'n; where closer, day by day, Brothers and sisters, leagu'd in pastime sweet, Around each other twin'd the bonds of love. I will not judge the counsel of the gods;

It may be an old translation, but it is nevertheless powerful. Anna Swanwick not only translated but was able to do so in iambic pentameter. I marvel at anyone who can do so. Of course almost all of Shakespeare's plays were in IP, and that is part of the reason he "created" so many words (in order to fit the 10 syllables in each line). The plot is well known, but is changed in places by Goethe. One must read it slowly as some sentences are "inverted" or have unusual word structures. If you are not familiar with the characters, the internet will provide all the background needed.Euripides wrote two plays about Iphigenia: I. in Aulis and I. in Tauris. Both are excellent plays full of drama and pathos. Sadly I have never seen them as free ebooks.

6 of 10 people found the following review helpful. One of the greatest dramas I know By H. Prior I can fall into line with the writer of the "product description" who did most wonderful. One exeption: instead of refering to a European spirit, Goethe's works at this time are to be related to the 'Klassik' period, strongly based on the resumption of the ancient Greek, Roman and renaissance ideas of humanity.I follow as well the given further recommendations of other plays, stressing esp. - e.g. - Gerhard Hauptmann, and adding, e.g., Friedrich Schiller, "Intrigue and Love", and Bertold Brecht, "The Good Person of Szechwan"!(Pls. don't imply to my comment I'd be focused too much on German drama and literature: I strongly appreciate as well e.g. plays of Tennessee Williams and Edward Albee, just to name some American writers.)

When the Adjutant General's Office published Raphael Thian's "notes" on U.S. military geography in 1880, it produced an invaluable research tool for generations of military historians to come. In this single documented reference volume, Chief Clerk Thian traced the confusing mutations through which the divisions, departments, and districts of the Army's command had evolved since 1813.

The volume is divided into three parts, beginning with the names of the United States Army Continental Commands, the date and authority for their creation, location of the headquarters, geographical changes and discontinuances, and other details including the geographical boundaries embracing each division, department, and district. Part II is filled with background information on states and territories, and Part III lists the maps contained in The Military Atlas of the United States.

The Addenda to this edition expand and update Thian's work. Notes made by Francis B. Heitman to keep his personal copy current are included, as is the Memorandum published by the government in 1906. This addition lists all changes from 1898 through 1905.

It's not the kind of thing you sit down and read from front to end, but rather a research work, containing an abundance of valuable information about the United States Army from the opening to the closing of the Western frontier, and beyond. If you are interested in this kind of minutiae, then this is a book for you. Wish there were more like it in publication, because I've seen some of what is out there at historical societies. What you have in this volume is, as the cover page explains, a detailed listing of "date of creation, names of commanders, and geographical boundaries" of military divisions, departments, districts, and reconstruction districts from 1818 to 1880, with addendum taking you beyond that date. For example, if you are interested in the Department of the Missouri, you will find that it was established November 9, 1861 "to consist of the States of Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Arkansas, and that portion of Kentucky west of the Cumberland River." On November 19, 1861, Maj. Gen. Henry W. Halleck was appointed commander of the department with headquarters in Saint Louis, Mo.The entries then take you through the changes made to and development of the department, areas added or subtracted, new commanders appointed. In May 9, 1866, showing a westward shift in focus, "Headquarters established at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas (G.O. No. 56, Department of the Missouri, 1866). In 1890, the final entry for the department tells us that it consists of the "States of Missouri, Kansas, and Illinois, and the Territories of Colorado and New Mexico."If you are looking for details of military forts and outposts, or detailed orders of battle, you will not find that information here. However, the information this volume does contain is invaluable for researchers, or just for western history buffs, or even those wishing to write realistic fiction. Highly recommended.

Good detailed book on OSD for SCCM completely automated by 1E By Shaun Cassells A well thought out and detailed analysis of automation and process for Operating System Deployments (OSD) via Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM or ConfigMgr) 2012. The book walks you through each and every step with screen shots, explanations, and background. This is not only a good startup guide but learning guide too. You can tell these guys have used a lot of different tools and settled on www.1e.com to truly automate an OSD. Worth the read to automate and succeed.I really like that this book doesn't only focus on the Task Sequence (TS) steps of SCCM but also on how to get data distributed without servers via 1E's tight integration via Alternate Content Provider (ACP) of SCCM. Even more I love that it focuses on identification, rationalization, usage, and the all important software upgrade. Most OSD projects fail because their was not enough focus on what software needs to be in place on the new Windows installation.

Appetite for Murder By Linda Langford at Chatting About Cozies Halia Watkins is the owner of Mahalia's Sweet Tea---a delicious Soul Food Restaurant in Maryland. Her mother makes the desserts; her cousin, Wavonne, waitresses and talks a bunch of smack all the time; and Halia keeps her eye on everyone and everything that's happening in her restaurant. When she and Wavonne find her shady acting business partner, Marcus, dead in the kitchen, Halia doesn't want bad publicity to ruin her hard work so they drag his body outside and leave it by a dumpster!! Then, to Halia's horror, the body disappears, and is found floating in a nearby lake. To make matters worse, Wavonne swiped Marcus's wallet off his dead body and has been swiping his credit card all over the place. The police don't know it's her....yet....but now, she's gonna be the main suspect. This dazzling, debut novel had me constantly laughing out loud!! I was thoroughly entertained on every page. Halia and Wavonne are the leading ladies, backed up by the friendly staff at the restaurant, and all the different suspects and various people they question as they quickly try to find the murderer and clear Wavonne's name. There is some cursing in this book, for those who are sensitive to that, but I wouldn't let that stop me from enjoying this mystery. I never had a clue as to who the killer was. I can hardly wait for book two!I received a complimentary copy of this book from the Author. This review is my own personal opinion and not influenced by anyone else.

Wavonne reminded me of Lula from Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series but she is even funnier. These two are in a fine mess when they find Marcus Rand, Haila’s silent partner, dead in Mahalia’s Sweet Tea. He is even more silent now. It looks like he has been hit upside the head with a cast iron frying pan. Haila panics when she thinks finding a dead body in her kitchen will mean the end of the Sweet Tea, so she decides to move the body. Wavonne is talked into helping her but she does something that soon will have her listed as the police’s prime suspect. Haila decides to find the real killer before her cousin ends up in the slammer and hilarity and drama ensues.I was grabbed by the title of this book and was completely drawn in to the story. The characters are full of humor, the mystery is great and the recipes and food sound delicious! Mahalia’s Sweet Tea sounds like a perfect place to visit for some fine fresh home-made food the will warm your soul. Haila has great business sense that she puts to good use and she tries figure out who relieved the world of Marcus’ misery. Turns out there are plenty of suspects. Wavonne is a gem who doesn’t have a lot of ambition but heart is in the right place.I can’t find out anything about this author but they are off to a fantastic start with this series. Set in a place near plenty of action I can’t wait to see what kind of mess Haila and Wavonne get into next.

An entertaining and profound look at the lives of birds, illuminating their surprising world—and deep connection with humanity. Birds are highly intelligent animals, yet their intelligence is dramatically different from our own and has been little understood. As we learn more about the secrets of bird life, we are unlocking fascinating insights into memory, relationships, game theory, and the nature of intelligence itself. The Thing with Feathers explores the astonishing homing abilities of pigeons, the good deeds of fairy-wrens, the influential flocking abilities of starlings, the deft artistry of bowerbirds, the extraordinary memories of nutcrackers, the lifelong loves of albatrosses, and other mysteries—revealing why birds do what they do, and offering a glimpse into our own nature.Drawing deep from personal experience, cutting-edge science, and colorful history, Noah Strycker spins captivating stories about the birds in our midst and shares the startlingly intimate coexistence of birds and humans. With humor, style, and grace, he shows how our view of the world is often, and remarkably, through the experience of birds. You’ve never read a book about birds like this one.

The Thing with Feathers: The Surprising Lives of Birds and What They Reveal About Being Human, by Noah Strycker

From Booklist *Starred Review* Birds are fascinating, and the more we humans study them, the more similarities we find between ourselves and our feathered neighbors. Strycker, editor of Birding magazine and author (Among Penguins, 2011), here combines the latest in ornithological science with snippets of history and his own vast experience in the field to hatch a thoroughly entertaining examination of bird behavior. Some avian behaviors don’t apply to humans—the almost magical homing abilities of pigeons, the incredible sense of smell of turkey vultures (as tested by the teenage author with the cooperation of a very dead deer and his extremely tolerant parents)—but many seemingly incredible bird actions have parallels in our own lives. Fairy wrens are cooperative breeders and show us one reason humans so often collaborate. The famous pecking order seen in domestic chickens certainly is evident in office politics, and magpies have often been seen holding impromptu funerals for their deceased flock mates. A sulphur-crested cockatoo named Snowball dances in synchrony to his favorite Backstreet Boys CD, leading to a discussion of the role of music for both birds and humans. Birds are equally alien and familiar, and in Strycker’s absorbing survey, we find out how much fun it is simply to watch them. --Nancy Bent

Review Praise for The Thing with Feathers "Mr. Strycker has the ability to write about the worlds of man and fowl without simplifying either.... He thinks like a biologist but writes like a poet, and one of the small pleasures of The Thing With Feathers is watching him distill empirical research into lyrical imagery.... Part the palm fronds behind his sentences, and you can almost see the British naturalist and broadcaster David Attenborough standing there in a pith helmet, smiling with amused approval at Mr. Strycker's off-center sensibility." – Wall Street Journal “The Thing With Feathers turns a shrewd, comparative eye on a succession of bird families to explore what [Strycker] calls their ‘human’ characteristics…This is an engaging work which illuminates something profound about all life, including our own.” – The Economist "Lovely, provocative..." – Robert Krulwich, NPR "Fascinating" – Minneapolis Star-Tribune "One of the best bird books you’ll read this decade. Guaranteed." -- BirdWatching “The Things With Feathers will encourage you to take a closer look at the natural world around you, and perhaps learn more not only about what you see but who you are." – Seattle Times “[Strycker] combines the latest in ornithological science with snippets of history and his own vast experience in the field to hatch a thoroughly entertaining examination of bird behavior… In Strycker’s absorbing survey, we find out how much fun it is simply to watch them.” – Booklist, STARRED “[Strycker’s] prose is difficult to stop reading.” – Publishers Weekly “A delightful book with broad appeal.” – Kirkus Reviews “A dazzling variety of avian subjects, including connections between birds and humans.” – Library Journal “There’s bird watching, then there is obsessing over why nearly 2,500 different species do the things they do. That’s Noah Strycker, and this lovely book is compelling to those that chart the different birds they see on walks, and the rest of us who just gaze longingly at them as they fly through the air.” – Flavorwire “Noah Strycker explores the increasing likelihood that birds enjoy a vastly richer intellectual, emotional and even artistic life than we smug humans have ever suspected. Read this book.” – Scott Weidensaul, author of Living on the Wind and The First Frontier "As the 'owner' of a dancing Green-cheeked Conure, as a life-long pigeon-lover, seabird researcher, and falcon enthusiast, I can tell you that not only is this book full of solid information—I expected that—but as a writer I am astonished at how loose and easy Noah Strycker has made the reading for us. This is an insightful and wonderfully companionable book. I can’t wait to read more from Strycker; meanwhile we have this gem."  – Carl Safina, author of Song for the Blue Ocean and The View From Lazy Point. “A thoughtful, engaging book, encompassing pigeon races, physics, vulture baiting, the Backstreet Boys, and a mathematical model applicable to both tennis rankings and chicken hierarchies—a work of dazzling range, nimbly written.” – Brian Kimberling, author of Snapper “I’ve read books about birds all of my life and this is the one I’ve been waiting for. Birds have a great deal to teach us. Strycker loves birds, understands their magic and mystery, and can extrapolate from their behavior wisdom for us all. At last we have a book worthy of this subject.” – Mary Pipher, author of The Green Boat

About the Author Noah Strycker has studied birds in some of the world’s most extreme environments, from the high Arctic to the Amazon jungle and Australian bush, and is an associate editor of the American Birding Association’s magazine, Birding. His previous book, Among Penguins, describes a summer in an isolated Antarctic field camp. Noah writes, lectures, and lives near Eugene, Oregon, between field seasons.

Author Noah Strycker illustrates interesting behavior in the bird world, and compares it with human behavior. Sometimes it's unexpected behavior, other times it's downright startling. As we learn more about what makes other creatures tick, it gets harder to pin down what makes us different, what makes us human. The male bower bird, for instance, spends ten months a year building, decorating, and perfecting an nest-like area that only serves to impress potential mates. Once the female bower bird has been sufficiently impressed by the male's building and decorating accomplishments, they mate, then she flies off to build her own nest and raise her chicks on her own. The male continues to work on his bower, and may mate with a dozen female bower birds per season. Since there's no apparent practical value in the bower itself, one wonders, is it art?Magpies can recognize themselves in a mirror, unlike other birds, and most mammals. Does this mean they have a sense of self, that they can recognize their reflections outside of themselves?Nutcrackers have amazing memories, recalling hundreds of locations where they've stored seeds for the winter. Having eliminated smell, luck, and some kind of marking system as methods of finding the seeds, researchers are convinced the nutcrackers memorize where the seeds are much the same way we would, by relying on landmarks and other patterns to remember. When birds and animals exhibit behavior that we typically think of as human, it's difficult not to anthropomorphize. Strycker keeps this to a minimum, but does occasionally make cutesy comments about the birds. And when it came to albatrosses, who mate for life, he was quite lyrical about romantic love. On the other hand, I learned quite a lot about birds. I recently watched a PBS Nature show about hummingbirds. It was a fabulously photographed hour of the tiny birds, but I learned more about them from one chapter in The Thing With Feathers than in that whole program.Fascinating book on birds, and also about what it means to be human.(Thanks to NetGalley and Riverhead Books for a review copy.)

X-birding escapades, the wonders of birds, and what it all means By Jaylia Author Noah Strycker is not someone to sit back and enjoy birds from a distance. He’s trekked within a few feet of a mating albatross pair, grabbed hold of penguins to attach GPS tags, and as a teenager he brought home a roadside deer carcass in his trunk, which filled his car with such an overwhelming stench that even at 65 miles an hour he had to drive with his head hanging out the window, just so he could could get close up photos the of turkey vultures as they feasted on gore for a week in his backyard. As both a field scientist and bird enthusiast Strycker has lots of fascinating information and personal stories about birds for this book, as anyone who was anywhere near me while I was reading knows since it was impossible not to share (sorry family and friends). Each chapter focuses on the wonders of a particular bird, including homing pigeons, mummerating starlings, fighting hummingbirds, self aware magpies, and architecturally gifted bowerbirds, but from there the discourse spreads out to include such topics as neuroscience, the definition of art, game theory, memory palaces, altruism, the fight or flight response, and what unique species qualities are left to humans (a diminishing list). There were just a few stories I found disturbing, like the one about his friend who hates non-native starlings so much he relishes shooting them with an air gun, clipping their wings, and feeding them disabled but alive to hawks (which Strycker reported as a field scientist neither condemning nor applauding), but those are the exception. Most of the book totally enthralled me with wonderful birds, vicarious birding adventures, and thoughtful commentary.I read an advanced review copy of this book from the publisher through LibraryThing. The opinions are mine.

A remarkable collection of home-truths about birds and people By OregonReview I just finished reading Noah Strycker's new bird book "The Thing with Feathers." This is one of the best pieces of nature writing that I have read in years. It is a prize-winner.I didn't know quite what to expect of a book that was advertised as being about the interesting behaviors of birds but also about what birds could teach us about being human. That idea made me nervous and I imagined miscellaneous swamps that the book might have strayed into.I was wrong. I won't even try to describe how this concept is handled, I'll just say that it works not only well, but almost transparently, with an impression of effortless grace that most authors don't ever achieve. Loren Eiseley and Diane Ackerman come to mind (though Strycker is a much more cheerful writer). Some of the chapters are a little stronger than others, but the overall level is very high.I know from my own work as a writer and editor that this impression of extraordinary smoothness and naturalness in transitions in a work filled - even stuffed - with technical detail takes a lot of effort to achieve, and even a writer whose tale-telling habits are as good as Noah's must have fiddled and adjusted quite a bit, but the effort paid off. The detail about bird behavior is almost universally fascinating yet unobtrusive. I learned many new things from the book (including new truths about my own nose (I'll let you find out for yourselves), but never once felt that I was stumbling over too many ornithological factlets. In recent years I have been one of the principal proofreaders for Oregon State University Press and I have an eye for typos. I saw exactly one in the whole book. The editing is excellent and it has good end notes and even a useful index, which some books these days don't bother with. Those of you who enjoyed Noah's book on penguins will be familiar with his story-telling skills and eye for birdy detail, but "Feathers" is a vastly more mature work in its style. The sense of humor is still there and the story-telling is even better, but the author at the crusty old age of 28 is not the same writer as the just-out-of-college kid who wrote about penguins. The experience not only in the field but in living shows in every paragraph.Alan Contrerasauthor of "Afield: Forty Years of Birding the American West"

About the Author I love writing, reading, and watching most anything. My favorite shows include Supernatural, Vampire Diaries, The Walking Dead, Pretty Little Liars, and Once Upon a Time. I've been writing and telling stories for as long as I can remember. As a kid, my story telling would get me into trouble when I would try to convince others that my stories were real. When I'm not busy writing, I spend time with my family. I also educate my kids from home. Sign up for book updates: http://stacyclaflin.com/newsletter/

Romance that isn't 50 Shades of Scary By That Writer Girl Stacy Claflin did a great job writing a romance for those who don't want to be bombarded with 50 Shades of language or nudity. The character development is well done, and her descriptions are well written. Her writing style is easy and clean. Perfect for a beach read or a book short enough to read over a weekend but long enough to feel like you've spent time with an author. If sweet romance is your thing, you'll love this.

This novel is based on a true story.

Warning: the flashback scenes contain vivid mental, physical, and sexual content against a child. The victim allowed me to write this novella only after I agreed to write the scenes as they occurred. The dialogue leading to the victim's flashbacks are products of my imagination; however the flashback memories are the victim's. The victim, who remains anonymous, has listened to and approved this novella.

Take a walk into the world of an abused child through the victim's eyes. Feel the victim's pain as the graphic flashbacks unfold. You'll shed tears as you hear about the violence one little life endures during her struggle for a "normal" life.

Newly revised edition.

A heartbreaking story of the abuse of a child that continues into adulthood. I would recommend this book to all readers that would like to know the story from the eyes of the victim. A very well written and talented author.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Protect Your Crybabies By Ey Wade Her silent tears is the sad horrific tale of a woman abused from childhood into her adult life. Far from being an original story it is distinguishable by the fact it is based on a true story. Through seemingly inconsequential daily life incidents we are invited into the life of the victim through flashbacks.Throughout the story I began to wonder if the child subconsciously misbehave and hurt herself in a desperate attempt to release herself from the life she was living. It made me swear to myself to pay more attention to the child who always seems to be crying for nothing. You never know what they are going through at home. This is a good, but very hard story to read without wanting to hurt someone.

It presents the life of Father Zakaria, victimof political repressions, who lived and preached in a small Georgian village. The novel describes the horrors of soviet concentration camps. Father Zakariaaudaciously confronts these abuses, endures tortures and humiliations, andmanages to instill the faith in God in the hearts of the villagers who had lostall hope in their lives. At the end the little village triumphs in its communalfaith. The Way of Flour, by Sevarion Nadiradze

Review

  • MAN'S RECONCILIATION WITH GOD
Sevarion Nadiradze started activities in e poetry field in the late 80s of the 20th century, a period when the streets of Tbilisi city was overcrowded with angry people having an aim to protest against the Soviet Union. Entire country was determined to overthrow the existing regime. in the same time, nobody had an idea how would be a new state or how to live in a liberated Georgia."The promised land" is a dream of characters that appear in Sevarion Nadiradze,s works. The author enriched a Georgian poetry with his original themes. The topics he chooses are directly linked to the rejuvenation-transformation of his country, as if the planet has to be born over again, "new sky and new land", that will be ruled by a new individual, free of any kind of sins, pure and unspoiled, as the first inhabitants of paradise.Sevarion Nadiradze has written the vast number of lyrical verses, some poems and novels. Huge part of his activities, his verses: "Waiting for the Sun, Wen it is Dark", "Turn on the Light", "Poet and Hurricane", as well as poems: "Magi and Stars", "Voice from the World", etc. are distinguished with their biblical, mythological, and optimistic moral-ethical motivations. s. nadiradze,s poems primarily are built on the ground of biblical stories. Though, the author finds a link between biblical chronicles stories. Though, the author finds a link between biblical chronicles and the country,s current dilemmas, brother killing war in Tbilisi is e synonym of Cain, who violently assassinated and killed his brother, Abel. The novel "khaki yashmak" is written about the tragic that occurred in Abkhazia in the beginning of 1990s, the novel is inspired by the will of prosperous future, humanism, friendship and amity in the Caucasus region. The presented novel "The way of flour", its characters have relations with the past, as majority of them having sins originated in the soviet regime and those sins are still remained as an extension into freed Georgia.in that rough time, when Georgia tried to escape from Russia's yoke, all unwanted weaknesses came up. As the Russians were pressing the Georgian people for two hundred years and the people stayed without true belief. envy, treachery, greediness, cruelty were determining factors of citizens' actions. The reality revealed that the people had forgotten all essential components of the life: freedom, spiritual tranquility, economic comforts had to be obtained with the hard work and religious devotion. In the novel, the author is showing us the people whose belief in God is barely surviving. The enemies have attained all the wishes they had: separated country, brother against hid own brother, a family against another one, village against village. After Russia's military invasion, Abkhazia and Tskinvali regions were cut from the motherland in 1993.According to the novel, there is a true path, only one connected to the real freedom. Having a bad experience of being under the communist regime for seventy year, the path is to follow our God's rules and regulations. The keynote of novel is described in its title: "The way of flour" that means to receive the Eucharist and to follow the lord's trail. Flour, is a soul of bread - flesh of Christ, symbol of Eucharist, unifying the world."The way of flour" is telling us a village inhabitants' life. Symbolically, they are illustrated as sinned people of that time. In the novel, the symbol of kindness, love, virtue and faith is a unity Tone where the bread is baked for Eucharist (Tone - A traditional, freestanding, beehive-shaped baker's oven made of clay) and it is a place, where a holiness of the country is kept. A lyrical hero of the novel, accidently discovers that Tone in his village: "I was amazed,- S. Nadiradze is narrating, - touching, - touching the Tone, fell down my knees and kisseed it, as it was a miraculous alcove, fundament of the cathedral, a ladder to the truth.Grandfather of Baduri and Jibo, Bikenti Zviadadze and Imeda Mkhedrishvili had built this Tone right on the edge of their houses. It was the sign of their firm friendship and a symbol of unity, to avoid fencing the area and to remain the Tone in the same place and keep it in a good condition as a symbol of unity.S.Nadiradze s narrating manner is an exciting one, when telling us about a civil war that occurred in the 1990s in Georgia. The bloody war between supporters of the first president of Georgia and resistance group is symbolized in the two characters, Badur Zviadadze and Jibo mkhedrishvili's confrontation. Grown up as brothers, who had forgotten the ancestors will, became fighters against each other. "The most tragic period in Georgia started, - the author is telling, - since Baduri and Jibo had badly renovated the Tone with fire-resistant bricks. Since that day, the bread has lost its genuine taste. The Tone, that used to as hot as the San, now is more looks lake the Crescent , cold and isolated. Abkhazia and Samachablo have been lost. The mothers were sobbing. The people were divided into two different groups, whose aim was to triumph over each other. This was a cruel marathon and Baduri and Jibo were involved in this battle as well".The tragic drama that is a plot of this novel occasionally resembles o grotesque. Defects of human behavior sometimes are exaggerated by the author. The most grotesque character has adolph mamulia. some dangerous moments are followed by funny situations and "The Way of flour" is read with a great pleasure. In the novel, one by one is showing pictures where the people with many sins are behaving miserably. The god's mercy disappeared, desperate is everywhere, maternity homes are on lockdown, worms are eating the trees, fertility is about to vanish. The people suffer but the lord remains quiet , because the villagers are lacking a clemency.Malicious people have to be punished, bat according to the novel, one kind person, clergyman Zakharia Mrevlishvili lives in the San village, who the author depends on to find out a solution. father Zakharia has a distinguished mission to fulfill, similar to biblical Moses, to lead his people to the place where there is a hope and the promised land. fighting against evil, hi does a great effort and makes his irreligious village dwellers to feel regret. Having a deep thoughts and struggle, the people show up at the village church with the strong will of repentance. Confession episode is the most impressive one in the novel. Consequently, the almighty Cod's grace flowed in their life. The village, that is a representation of the whole world, rejuvenates. In the final episode of "The Way of Flour" an amazing picture is shown. The sins free world is returning back to its pure commencement. The best period comes down for the human being, which in the novel is presented as signs of the spring, like in old eposes. A Lighthouse for the Soul By Johanna It was a joy to read The Way of Flour; it stands as a lighthouse above the former atrocities of the Soviet Union. It would appear that the driftwood which dammed up human spirits in a stagnant pool of pain and self destruction becomes a parable and a promise for hope in the world wherever evil reigns. It also can stand as a warning to those of us in the West who too easily surrender our liberty and values to a god of self indulgence and moral blindness. It underlines the power of a single man of virtue, a humble priest, to change society and bring about a new springtime. Just as the trillion cells in our body, as assembled by our Creator, can work together in peace and harmony, each with its own capacity in coordination with all others under the leadership of our Head, so is our world called on to function. Our need for food and sustenance is not merely for physical food, but, this book makes a case for a uniquely spiritual food ground out of the wheat we grow, which is the infusion of Divine Life into that wheat we lay on our table. Without this special "flour" we lose our direction and collapse into self destruction. With this special "flour" we are given the wings to transcend this fallen world.

The writing is clear and straightforward and would be helpful for kids who love sports. The book is targeted for a really specific audience and isn't useful to everyone who reads it. But would definitely recommend it for students, and perhaps teachers who want to try and teach a new method to heir students.

Four years after she set sail from England, leaving everything she most loved behind, Maisie Dobbs at last returns, only to find herself in a dangerous place . . .

In Jacqueline Winspear‘s  powerful story of political intrigue and personal tragedy, a brutal murder in the British garrison town of Gibraltar leads Maisie into a web of lies, deceit, and peril.

Spring 1937. In the four years since she left England, Maisie Dobbs has experienced love, contentment, stability—and the deepest tragedy a woman can endure. Now, all she wants is the peace she believes she might find by returning to India. But her sojourn in the hills of Darjeeling is cut short when her stepmother summons her home to England; her aging father Frankie Dobbs is not getting any younger.

But on a ship bound for England, Maisie realizes she isn’t ready to return. Against the wishes of the captain who warns her, “You will be alone in a most dangerous place,” she disembarks in Gibraltar. Though she is on her own, Maisie is far from alone: the British garrison town is teeming with refugees fleeing a brutal civil war across the border in Spain.

Yet the danger is very real. Days after Maisie’s arrival, a photographer and member of Gibraltar’s Sephardic Jewish community, Sebastian Babayoff, is murdered, and Maisie becomes entangled in the case, drawing the attention of the British Secret Service. Under the suspicious eye of a British agent, Maisie is pulled deeper into political intrigue on “the Rock”—arguably Britain’s most important strategic territory—and renews an uneasy acquaintance in the process. At a crossroads between her past and her future, Maisie must choose a direction, knowing that England is, for her, an equally dangerous place, but in quite a different way.

Review ''This eleventh entry in the Maisie Dobbs series, with enough backstory to stand alone, shows the same meticulous research that grounds these books so firmly in their time and place, along with moving life changes that further humanize the intrepid protagonist. Another winner from Winspear.'' --Booklist, starred review ''A series that seems to get better with every entry.'' --Wall Street Journal, praise for the series ''A superb series.'' --Richmond Times-Dispatch, praise for the series ''Winspear elegantly weaves historical events with Maisie's own suffering - —the bombing of Guernica is particularly well done - —all while constructing an engaging whodunit. Fans of this long-running series will welcome Maisie's return in this 11th installment while feeling the pain of her losses as deeply as if they were their own.'' --Kirkus

Meanwhile, at a crossroads between her past and future, Maisie must choose a direction, knowing that England is, for her, an equally dangerous place, but in quite a different way.

“As always, Maisie—one of the most complex and admirable characters in contemporary fiction—fulfills expectations. And Winspear continues to dazzle as she once again excels in and transcends the genre.”—Richmond Times–Dispatch

As concerns this series, I am, too. Longtime fans will probably be as stunned as I over the first few pages of A Dangerous Place. In a series of letters, Winspear deals with four momentous years in Maisie's life with what can only be described as brisk efficiency. I can understand her desire not to bog down the narrative, but since Maisie is already constantly harking back to time spent with her mentor or her service in World War I or her college days or what her best friend would say to her, what's a little more time spent on telling readers about those four years?Winspear does her usual marvelous job in giving readers a real feel for the setting. With the Spanish Civil War raging just over the border, with the build-up to World War II, Gibraltar's strategic position makes it extremely valuable to many countries, and it seems that they all have representatives in place, lurking around the corners of buildings and following Maisie wherever she goes. The author has also created a strong secondary cast-- Salazar the café owner, Mrs. Bishop the owner of the guesthouse, and the dead man's sister among them. The more the story unfolds, the more it seems that no one is whom they first appear to be, and with the number of people spying on others it's a miracle they don't start tripping over each other. This is a presentiment of another problem I'm beginning to have with a series I've loved since its inception. The closer to World War II the series becomes, the more the storylines are delving into the shadowy world of spies and double-dealing. I've never cared for spy novels, so I'm definitely not enjoying this foray into that world. But as a character told Maisie in a previous book, once those spy organizations get their hooks into you, they don't let you go. I really don't want to see Maisie go down that road.Although the mystery is rather slow to unfold, it does pick up speed and becomes quite intriguing. I enjoyed watching Maisie solve a complex case, just as I enjoyed the author's depiction of Gibraltar at this very tumultuous time. I'm deeply invested in Winspear's character. Maisie's story has grown from being a rags-to-riches tale to something deeper and much more meaningful. But for the past few books, Maisie has seemed to take two steps back to every three steps forward. Her experiences during World War I have left an indelible mark upon her of which she seems unwilling or unable to let go. With her constant musing on the past, I just can't quite see her as a successful spy in the next calamitous war to come. I am at a crossroads, and I am actually wondering if I'll be continuing with this series-- something that would have been completely unthinkable in the past.

It was an immediate publishing hit and was followed by seven or eight other novels featuring detective/psychologist, Maisie Dobbs. The first few novels in the series were extremely well written, with Jacqueline Winspear carefully detailing the back-story of Maisie's life and her studies at Cambridge and nursing work in France in the Great War. She created the character of Dr Maurice Blanche, who was Maisie's mentor and teacher as Maisie opened up her detective agency in London after the war. We read the cases that Maisie took on in those first few books and we see her private life as the doctor she had loved during the war is taken from her by a lingering death. Maisie Dobbs and the secondary characters were brilliant creations in Jacqueline Winspear's talented hands. And then, something happened to the books. Did Winspear lose interest in her characters? Was she bored with writing about 1920's London? Who really knows, but somehow the series lost its "oomph" and the last five or so novels were, I guess, "ordinary". They were good, not great, reads. In 2014 Winspear left her Maisie Dobbs character and wrote a stand-alone novel, also set in the Great War. This year, 2015, Winspear has returned to the series with an excellent novel, "A Dangerous Place". She's not back to her original mo-jo but this novel is certainly closer to the older novels than the more recent ones. This series began in the post-war years in London as Maisie established her unique detective agency. She solved crimes by intuition and psychological insight as much as by physical evidence. As the years passed, and the 1920's turned into the Depression years of the 1930's, Maisie evolved into a rather ordinary character with wealthy patrons and clients and a "don't ask me to commit" relationship with the rather dishy James Compton. "Will she" or "won't she" give up her independence to marry James and become "Lady Compton". Her cases also become less interesting. Finally, she closed her agency and went off to consider her life and her future. This book, "A Dangerous Place", tells of the years in the late 1930's and what Maisie's life has become.By 1937, Maisie's life has changed completely and she is at sixes-and-sevens as she searches for both emotional peace and her place in the rapidly changing world. She spends time in India - searching - and on the return trip to England, she impulsively gets off the boat in Gibraltar. She's not ready to face her English ghosts. She immediately gets involved in a murder mystery in the colony and begins a personal investigation that echoes the methods she used during her detective agency days in London. This is what is a throw-back to the earlier novels. Winspear invokes Maurice Blanche and his teachings far more in this book than in any recent book. "Our" Maisie is back to her long-time readers.Winspear also brings in the Spanish Civil War, raging over the border from Gibraltar. Part of the novel is set in war-torn Madrid and in the outlying battle areas. At the book's end, Maisie is still searching, but her path has become a lot clearer. "A Dangerous Place" is a great read.

She is learning to live her life again after what would easily be considered the most difficult of circumstances and blows that life can deal to a woman. In a sense, she is on the run from herself and that equals being on the run from her prior life. The personal struggle described in this book seems very real and will certainly stay with me long after having finished reading the story. As she tries to find the strength to find her way home to England, Maisie stops off in Gibraltar to work up her courage to make the final leg of the voyage home. Instead, she literally stumbles across the body of a man who has been murdered. She buries herself in the task of trying to figure out who killed the man and why others are trying to hide this information. The backdrop of the book is the Spanish Civil War. We are only taken to the actual war for a short period of the book but the main thrust of the information is about how and by whom this war was being fought. It is sometimes referred to as a practice war for World War II. While the players are moved about by the author as if they were pieces on a chess board, the war was essentially fascism versus socialism. It is in this environment that Maisie finds herself seeking simple truths and finding instead political intrigue and lies. The process of working through this morass is how Maisie starts to find the light at the end of her own dark tunnel.I have read a few of the Maisie Dobbs books and find this one quite different. It seems as if Maisie is at a turning point in her life and isn't quite sure which way she will go in the end. It is interesting to see this and to think that perhaps the character is showing us some indecision that the author is having. Whatever the case, I enjoyed reading the book and look forward to the next in the series - wherever Ms. Winspear decides to take Miss Dobbs.
