About the Author Prof. Itskov studied Automobile Engineering at the Moscow State Automobile and Road Technical University, Russia. In 1990 he received his doctoral degree in mechanics, and in 2002 he obtained his habilitation degree in mechanics from the University of Bayreuth, Germany. Since 2004 he has been full professor for continuum mechanics at the RWTH  Aachen University, Germany. His research interests comprise tensor analysis, non-linear continuum mechanics, in particular the application to anisotropic materials, as well as the mechanics of elastomers and soft tissues in a broad sense.

By Rajeev Dubey It has been around 6 months now that I needed to strengthen my understanding of tensors to develop mathematical models for a project and I have been referring to a large number of books in the field. Many have been good, others just OK. But Itskov's "Tensor Algebra and Tensor Analysis for Engineers" has been difficult to leave since it arrived at my table. And this has been the only book to my knowledge that gives such exhaustive solutions (leaving Schaum's), an immense help for self learners!If you want to develop new formulations or if you want to develop algorithms based on existing formulations in mechanics, or for that matter any related field of physics, this book would be the right choice. By the time you finish chapter 1, you would know you have started making qualitative and quantitative sense of tensors. The book is direct and covers enough ground quickly helping and arriving at mature level of details fast. A copy of Synge and Schild's Tensor Calculus would be helpful too.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Concise Elegant Simple By physics joe I really like this book for it's straightforward and concise presentation. I have found other books on tensors to be too wordy and without any real focus. This book has no flab or fat to it and it moves pretty fast. You do need a decent understanding of Vector analysis before going in and it helps to know what a tensor is. Only problem I have is I am sdudying General Relativity and I wish the book addressed tensor calculus in that direction. Because of that I have only been interested in about the first 100 pages so my review is confined that part of the book. That said this is my favorite book on tensor analysis.
