This is a collection of articles, many written by people who worked with Mandelbrot, memorializing the remarkable breadth and depth of his work in science and the arts. Contributors include mathematicians, physicists, biologists, economists, and engineers, as expected; and also artists, musicians, teachers, an historian, an architect, a filmmaker, and a comic. Some articles are quite technical, others entirely descriptive. All include stories about Benoit.

Also included are chapters on fractals and music by Charles Wuorinen and by Harlan Brothers, on fractals and finance by Richard Hudson and by Christian Walter, on fractal invisibility cloaks by Nathan Cohen, and a personal reminiscence by Aliette Mandelbrot.

While he is known most widely for his work in mathematics and in finance, Benoit influenced almost every field of modern intellectual activity. No other book captures the breadth of all of Benoit's accomplishments.

The accounts are amazing for the breadth of influence they represent By Harlan Brothers This extraordinary work is a touching, insightful, and informative collection of reflections, personal accounts, and research, many of which are written by Mandelbrot's friends and colleagues. The accounts are amazing for the breadth of influence they represent, from mathematics and science to the arts and economics. What gives this book a unique sense of authenticity is that we hear directly from people whose lives were profoundly impacted by Benoit's friendship and his work. These personal and professional perspectives vividly portray the multidimensionality of Benoit's life. The individual voices are as varied as the subject matter they cover. The editing and production of the book itself are top-notch. Overall, it is a fitting tribute to an extraordinary man who happened to be a true genius of the modern age.(Disclosure: Like the other authors appearing in this volume, I am an unpaid contributor to the book.)Benoit Mandelbrot: A Life in Many Dimensions (Fractals and Dynamics in Mathematics, Science, and the Arts: Theory and Applications)

Lesmoir-gordon This is a beautiful book about a true genius, who inspired me to make three films about him. The most well known is 'The Colors of Infinity'. This film has shown in over 40 countries, is available in 4 languages and inspired a book of the same title, which is published by Springer. Mandelbrot was very pleased with this film.

By starfractal This is a definitive collection of specially written chapters that highlight the work of Mandelbrot, through his colleagues, friends, and those whom he mentored. It also has fascinating tidbits on his life and the impact of fractals and roughness, on many others. Some have compared Mandelbrot with Hawking and Einstein in terms of his acheivements. This book is an essential addition to those who want to know who he was and what he did, and how it changed the world, and will continue to do so.
