Handy reference work By Experienced Editor iPad at Work for DummiesAlthough this book contains a ton of useful information, it's not an introduction to the iPad. It assumes you already know what an iPad is and how to use it. That's to the good, because it gets down to business right away.The first three chapters do give the basics of setting up an iPad for professional use (as opposed to entertainment such as playing games, surfing the web, or sending emails). I recommend reading these three chapters straight through to help make the initial choices that will facilitate your work load later. Check out chapter 3 in particular, because that's all about security. If you're carrying around financials and other sensitive info on your iPad, you sure don't want it hacked somewhere!Once you get past these three chapters, the rest of the book is pretty much a buffet. Pick the parts that pertain to your business. For example, I skipped the whole section on Office 365, because I use iWork. On the other hand, I found the chapter on the Cloud to be very valuable because of all the practical details. In fact, the whole section on sharing is highly useful for what I do (working remotely with people all over the country). I've had some frustrating experiences trying to do presentations from a laptop, and this book gives clear, step by step directions for giving a successful presentation from my iPad instead.Two strong features of the book: the index and the table of contents. That's right, a user manual is no good at all if you can't find what you want. The index sends me to the exact page if I know the name of what I need to read. But if I don't, the detailed table of contents lets me search by subject, because I can see at a glance what's in each chapter and get a good idea where to start looking.I'll be using this as a reference and probably carrying it with me on trips. It's a big book but printed on a lightweight paper so it's not too heavy for a weekender travel bag.

Whether you've got a much loved iPad 2 or are a newbie, this is a good place to start By Knits in Tardis Ours is a fairly OS agnostic household with both Linux and Windows on Desktop PCs, Windows Phones and iDevices and even a strong representation of Amazon's "forked" version of Android for Kindle devices. I know that iPad at Work for Dummie will fill a useful function on our reference shelf, but first I wanted to look at it from the vantage point of Amazon's "walled garden". While family members with Kindle Fires use these mostly for recreational/entertainment content, web browsing, email and gaming purposes, we are starting to see the encroachment of more productivity-connected needs, especially as our teens get older and engage in more collaborative online school projects.I guess what I take away from iPad at Work for Dummies is that yes, the grass is sometimes a little greener. While, for example, I can use Evernote as adroitly on the Kindle as any iOS-head, the "office suite" apps I've tried so far have me a bit wistful about Office 365 for the iPad. (Maybe not so much about the $70/year/person or $100/year/family subscription cost.) And I'd kill to have no-contract data on my HDX the way owners of the iPad can from Apple. Then there are the security features of the iPad...Galen Gruman has got to be one of the better "Dummies" authors I've come across - there's no whiff of condescension or "cutesy-ness" in this new addition to the "Dummies" stable of references, and I didn't even start to nod off while reading about syncing and sharing files.For me, the iPad is still a theoretical "maybe" and yes, I know the Kindle Fire was developed as a media device for entertainment first, not for productivity, etc., etc. I might be way off on a tangent here, but there's so much that *is* the same about using the iPad vs. a Kindle Fire or an android tablet that it's well to keep tabs on what's happening within competing "walled gardens". Who knows, I might one day find a compelling practical (non-entertainment/gaming) reason to leap between platforms. Or my spouse may - he steals my tablet continuously, as it's a heck of a lot easier on his eyes than the iPhone he carries for work.But for now, I'm off to check out an All Emoji keyboard app. Y'Know, I hear that Apple has those too.

Good summary of tools that may help break you free of your PC By iiiireader The "iPad at Work for Dummies" book provides a lot of great advice on how to better use your iPad in a work environment and perhaps even be able to replace your desktop PC and work exclusively with just an iPad.This book assumes that the reader already has some understanding of the iPad and its ecosystem. It is not an introduction to the iPad book that starts from how to turn it on and moves forward from there. Also, it is not a book that has predefined recipes that transform your work practices from PC to no PC is just a few steps. Instead, the book is a guide what tools and apps you are most likely going to need in a work environment, such as email, a calendar, a word processor and so forth and with each subject, practical advice is given to help the reader make good choices and hopefully become self-reliant.The first chapter discusses which accessories you may want to consider carrying around with your iPad, the second chapter talks about considerations that should be taken into account when initially setting up the device and the third chapter focuses on security considerations. From experience, I know that most larger corporations have strict security requirements for use of mobile devices on the corporate network, so I would highly recommend making sure that the device complies with those requirements before going forward. Often failure to comply with corporate security requirements can be grounds for termination.That said, the next eleven chapters cover different categories of general and specialized applications that are common across most corporate businesses and are ideal for use with an iPad. For instance, there is a chapter on travel tools, four chapters on various document processing, spreadsheet and presentation tools. There are chapters on personal and group note management tools, task management tools, outlining and brainstorming tools, email, contact list and calendar tools as well as messaging and conferencing tools. There are two chapters devoted to remote computer access and web browsers. Next, there are five chapters devoted to document management and document sharing, image editing as well as presentation of those documents.The book finishes up with a chapter on other useful small utilities to consider, such as a calculator app and a short survey of some iPad tools that are written with specific industries in mind. In my opinion, the point of these last two chapters is to be a reminder that as an iPad business user, there are some utilities you do not want to forget because they will simplify your work patterns immensely and also that the reader should do some investigation to see if there are any specialized tools that may be considered must haves for a given business field.I found this book to be a very valuable guide. While neither I nor my husband have been able to move completely off our day to day business computers and live exclusively on an iPad, we have both used a number of the suggestions in this book so that we do not always need to be connected to our business computer.We regularly use our iPads for occasional business use, often for document preparation, email correspondence, sometimes presentation and sometime remote access. The iPad has proven to be invaluable when we are on the road. There have been multiple occasions where the iPad and one or more tools have helped fix critical problems quickly that might otherwise have forced us to return home and deal with the issue directly.I found the book an excellent tool with a lot of additional advice to help both my husband and I become even less reliant on our work PCs. I highly recommend this book.
