Book three of In the Zone
Alex Sullivan may be the San Diego Barracudas' resident playboy, but he hasn't been able to forget the woman who kissed him like her life depended on it ten months ago. When he sees her again at a teammate's wedding, he can't think of anything but spending more time with her. Preferably naked.
Claire Marzano lost years catering to an overbearing husband, and she's not going to answer to anyone ever again. A hot fling is just what she needs to get back in the game, and that's exactly what sexy Alex offers—one wild long weekend away, with no promises or obligations.
But that one weekend changes everything. Despite knowing full well Alex isn't the kind to ever commit, Claire is falling for him. And Alex secretly imagines a future with his strong, smart "accidental girlfriend." Until a surprise announcement and an on-ice accident threaten to derail everything…or cause Alex to finally ditch his old ways and become the man Claire needs him to be.

By Romance Between The Sheets Please note this review may contain spoilers.Out Of The Game has been my favourite in the series so far, just as I hoped it would be. There's just something enjoyable about watching a bad boy fall and fall hard for the right woman.Meet Alex, resident playboy on the Barracudas team. It's a title he loves and works hard for each and every season. Until one night when he met Claire, Erin's older sister. Fresh from her separation from her cheating husband, she got cold feet during a heavy make-out session and bolted. But not before making a very memorable impression on Alex.Meeting up again for Tim and Erin's wedding, both aren't really surprised to feel that the sparks are still there. After convincing Claire she needs to run wild and have some fun, they hop on a plane for an impromptu holiday and hopefully a fling. But very quickly the fling becomes 'more', with both wanting to see exactly how far they could take the relationship. Not entirely sure of his feelings, their relationship is put to the test when an unexpected surprise and a career-threatening injury get thrown into the mix.I loved Alex and his sense of humour. His filthy mouth and his dirty talk was hot. But I really felt for him after his injury, and his resulting anger and actions were believable. I hated that he hurt Claire, but I understood his anger and his desire for self-destruction and why he lashed out the way he did. I liked how Claire became her own person after her divorce from Vic. She became a woman more interested in being herself than what she thought she needed to be for others. I liked that she started making a name for herself in the hockey league with her art events, and how she stood up for herself after Alex treated her like crap for so long.Again, the team camaraderie is really enjoyable to read and the prank they pulled on Alex was priceless. That scene had me laughing out loud. Now I'm left trying to figure out who could get the next story.

In the first two book of the In the Zone series, there was a very strong emotional core of every book, but this book in particular struck me as very strong. The story follows Alex, the resident playboy of the Barracudas team and how he comes to terms with having an actual relationship. His growth and development through the book absolutely fascinated me. His love interest is Claire, the sister of the love interest in On the Surface. Claire is recovering from a bad divorce of her ten year marriage that happened at the end of On the Surface. Her healing and getting back in to dating is good to read about as well, but I think Alex was by far the more interesting character. There is the normal hassling he receives from his teammates, running in to exes, and learning to share his life with another person. He is also dealing with issues from his past that really make you feel for him and hope he makes things work with Claire. It was fun, though, to see Claire grow into being a strong hockey girlfriend and learn to spread her wings after her divorce. She even organizes a fundraising event I though was awesome. You also get a better feel for the team dynamics in this book. It is interesting to get to know the other players a little better. I am hoping some of the others get a book soon. Hart and Jeremy also play a minor role in this book which was nice to see, but they are more prominent in Across the Line.Like the other books, there is a lot of hockey in it which is nice for fans. Granted, it’s not a huge lot, as it is a novella, but it is definitely a part of the story and it is integrated beautifully. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone looking for an intense, beautiful read for a day. It can be read as a stand-alone, but I would recommend reading On the Surface first. There are a few things you learn in it that makes things in this book a little more clear. This book parallels with the second book Across the Line. The story lines are occurring at the same time. It is definitely a good romance without tripping over into erotic, which is great for a romance novella. It is even hard for me to classify this as a novella as it is a rather long one, which I thoroughly appreciated with the strong development of the story.

By Jen Lazaris I’ve been a fan of the In the Zone series since it started, but Out of the Game has quickly become my favorite. They are all great books, but I feel Willoughby hit her stride and exceeded my expectations as a reader with this one.I always love books where the hardcore playboy falls head-over-heels for someone he didn’t quite expect, and this one didn’t disappoint.Alex is a hockey player known for his reputation with women, and Claire’s recently divorced from her cheating husband. They’re attracted to each other, but Alex knows he has to be careful in his approach with Claire. Claire wonders how she is going to protect her heart against his advances.Though the book told the journey of both characters, I will say Alex ripped my heart out during a few scenes in this book. It would have been easy to write him off as a simple character who loves hockey, women and having a good time. But he’s so much more than that.As a heroine, Clair is sweet, funny, strong and likeable. She only gets stronger as the book goes along, and she’s a really good match for Alex. What really came across while reading this book was how much these two made each other better people when they were together. They pushed each other physically and emotionally through little issues and huge, life-changing ones. And oh, the issues! I found myself holding my breath at one point in the book, and my eyes tearing up at another point. It was a total roller coaster ride.Willoughby has a very strong author voice, and her books are sexy, witty and emotionally charged. It's easy to get invested in the characters and their relationships in this series. I’m looking forward to reading more. Five stars.
