When Margaret Williamson left her family’s rural Wisconsin farm to work in Minneapolis in 1923, her mother, Olava, wrote regularly with updates about daily activities: laundry, bread baking, plowing, planting, and harvesting the crops. Sometimes she enclosed a note from seven- year- old Helen, who reported on school and shenanigans and how she longed to see Margaret again. So begins decades of stories about a family at once singular— with personal joys and challenges— and broadly representative of the countless small farms that dotted the midwestern landscape in the early twentieth century. As Margaret’s niece Sara DeLuca weaves together family tales gleaned from letters and conversations, we learn of births and deaths, of innovations like the automobile, radio, and telephone that drew rural communities together, and of national and international events that brought home stone- hard truths. Depression- era farmers struggled to keep their land and feed their livestock; many failed. During wartime, this family made do just like everyone else. The tale that emerges is one of fierce devotion to family and work, of a changing landscape as smaller farms became part of conglomerates, and of the comforting daily rhythms of life shared with those who know us best. Poet and writer Sara DeLuca grew up on a dairy and sheep farm near the Williamson “homeplace” in Polk County, Wisconsin. She is the author of the memoir Dancing the Cows Home and the poetry collection Shearing Time.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. entranced and delighted with this chronicle of a past way of life By She Treads Softly The Crops Look Good: News from a Midwestern Family Farm by Sara DeLuca is a very highly recommended biography of a family, told mainly through their correspondence, who lived on a dairy farm in Polk County, Wisconsin from 1923-1955. Although I understand that this biographical narrative will be appealing to a limited audience, those who chose to read it are going to be entranced and delighted with this chronicle of a past way of life. Polk County, Wisconsin is "dairy farming country, settled primarily by Scandinavian and German immigrants..... The soil that once nurtured hardwood forests is rich and loamy. But the climate is extreme and unforgiving, ranging from one hundred degrees in midsummer to minus thirty in the deep of winter."DeLuca was given the family letters she uses to tell the story of her families past over twenty years ago, but she waited until she felt ready to undertake the writing. She writes, "They were a burdensome gift. I had been given an assignment I could not fulfill. The farming culture described in these letters has passed into history. I wanted to bear witness to that time. But any book I might create from these writings would require skillful narration, and I did not feel up to the task." Once she felt ready to write this intimate biography, she decided to present the letters chronologically and added notes on historical details from each time period. She manages to capture a past way of life in a rich, rewarding way, with details that bear witness to the work ethic of the times. An example of a letter from a young girl, Helen sent to her older sister Margaret describes life of the farm on July 24, 1925:"Dear Margaret,We are not getting any more strawberries now but we have been picking rasberrys for quite a while. Some of the rasberrys in the middle of the bushes are so ripe they are pretty near purple and they are so nice and big. Mama has canned 25 quarts of rasberrys and she has canned 12 quarts of peas. I milked 3 cows last night and washed all the supper and lunch dishes. They finished haying yesterday afternoon and soon they are going to cut the last field of peas. Mama is washing clothes today and I have to find my new stockings so she can wash them.Good-bye for now and love from sister Helen"Contents include:GenealogyMapPrologueDirectly as a Stone, 1923–24Bread and Butter, 1925–29What One Has to Do, 1930–35A School in Patience, 1936–39A Thousand Thoughts, 1940–42When Sorrows Come, 1943–44The Beautiful Country, 1945–46Back Where I Belong, 1947–49Love Made Visible, 1950–55EpilogueAcknowledgmentsSource NotesIndexDisclosure: My Kindle edition was courtesy of Minnesota Historical Society Press for review purposes.

Established by French financier and aviation enthusiast, Jacques Schneider, in 1912, the Coupe d'Aviation Maritime Jacques Schneider (commonly called the Schneider Trophy) was the catalyst behind the rapid progression of the maritime aviation industry. The annual race along a triangular course of 280 km (later 350 km) attracted crowds of up to 200,000 and quickly became the subject of commercial rivalries and national pride. It instigated a thirst for pioneering design in aviation that eventually led to the development of such aircraft as the British Supermarine Spitfire, the American P-51 Mustang, and the Italian Macchi C.202 Folgore. Over the course of 30 years, Ralph Pegram has extensively researched each of the 100+ aircraft that participated in the contest for the Schneider Trophy from its inception in 1912 to the last race in 1934. The construction, testing and performance of each aircraft and engine is described in detail, with the help of over 120 1:72-scale 3-view drawings from the author's personal collection, most of which are previously unpublished. In addition to this, Pegram describes the individual stories of the pilots, many of whom died in their bid for glory, the fascinating political dynamics underlying each contest, and the rivalries and partnerships that led to the development of some of the most famous models of aircraft ever produced. Schneider Trophy Seaplanes and Flying Boats is the most comprehensive work to have been published on the subject since the early 1980s; the result of decades of research, and supported by unique diagrams, numerous maps, tables, posters and over 100 photographs, it is essential reading for any aviation enthusiast.

Schneider Trophy Seaplanes and Flying Boats: Victors, Vanquished and Visions, by Ralph Pegram

About the Author RALPH PEGRAM recently retired after 35 years working around the world in the oil exploration business for a major oil company. A geology graduate whose early plans to study aeronautical engineering were thwarted by failing to make the grade in mathematics. However, the author maintained a strong interest in aviation history with a particular slant towards the Schneider Trophy contests and aircraft which he has been researching for over 30 years.

A fine resource, if you don't mind the lack of color By James Pernikoff I just received the book today and after a first pass-through, I really like it, and I think that it will become the standard reference on Schneider Trophy aircraft, both the ones that flew and the ones that didn't.I particularly enjoy the fact that minor variations, either of different aircraft of the same model, or of the same aircraft at different times, all merited individual three-view drawings. All of these drawings are identified as to date, location, pilot (if applicable) and race number (ditto). Some drawings are more detailed than others, but that is a function of the available source material, and in fact the author provides an appendix showing all the source materials used to create each drawing, with subjective ratings given as to the reliability of the source materials. There are also additional cutaway three-views of many of the later aircraft. Particularly nice is a comparison of the floats on the S.6, S.6A and S.6B.I also like the fact that there are course maps provided for each race, and usually a reproduction of each one's official poster. There aren't too many photos, but with all of the drawings that is not, to me, a big deal. It appears that every aircraft that was ever intended for Schneider appearances is shown, including many that I was unfamiliar with, especially in the 1931-and-later period. The book has a pretty good-looking bibliography and index, and the production values seem very good to me. If you have any interest in the technology of the Schneider Trophy era, I think that you need this book. (I should point out that I have been an airframe design engineer for 35 years, so I appreciate books like this!)

The old Putnam and Hirsch books are longtime treasured members of my library, and I was really looking forward to Pegram's book as the "ultimate" Schneider Trophy aircraft reference, but alas, it falls slightly short. The physical attributes of the book are exemplary. It is attractive, well laid out, and appears to be printed on good quality paper and very well bound. Though I have not read the entire text, it appears that Mr. Pegram is a very knowledgeable and capable writer on this subject. The 3 view drawings are outstanding, and they are indeed what makes this book special. I am very happy to have this book in my collection, but...The only thing keeping this book from being the ultimate Schneider Trophy aircraft reference is the photos. They are few in number, and are so small and indifferently reproduced as to seem to be almost an afterthought. Even the relatively small number of photos would have been OK if they were larger and reproduced with more care. As it is, I will cherish this book primarily for its superlative drawings and text, but will look elsewhere for photos of these wonderful machines.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Great in some areas, but compromised in others By Alan Smith I was excited when I discovered that this book was planned. There hasn't been one on the Schneider trophy for many years, and it promised much.On balance, it delivers, but only just. Without doubt the success of the book comes from the superb general arrangement drawings created by author Ralph Pegram. These alone make the book worth buying. Every aircraft, including those little more than gleams in their designers' eyes, is included, something not done before in any book on this the most prestigious of all early-aviation contests. And Pegram does a good job of qualifying his sources, noting carefully in the books appendices which drawings are taken from detail manufacturers' material, and which are educated guesses.Where the book falls down is in its sub-editing. Spelling and style are inconsistent throughout, which after a while becomes tedious. Attention to detail also various in the text. Once example is my own book, which Pegram refers to by a title that is simply incorrect in the bibliography. So for any aviation or Schneider Trophy enthusiast, this remains a must-buy book, but one that, like many of the aircraft featured in the Schneider Trophy story itself, isn't quite the success hoped for.

The Citizen Soldiers explores the military reform movement that took its name from the famous Business Men's Military Training Camps at Plattsburg, New York. It also illuminates the story of two exceptional men: General Leonard Wood, the rambunctious and controversial former Rough Rider who galvanized the Plattsburg Idea with his magnetic personality; and Grenville Clark, a young Wall Street lawyer.

The Plattsburg camps strove to advertise the lack of military preparation in the United States and stressed the military obligation every man owed to his country. Publicized by individuals who voluntarily underwent military training, the preparedness movement rapidly took shape in the years prior to America's entry into the First World War. Far from being war hawks, the Plattsburg men emphasized the need for a "citizen army" rather than a large professional establishment. Although they failed in their major objective -- universal military training -- their vision of a citizen army was largely realized in the National Defense Act of 1920, and their efforts helped to establish selective service as the United States' preferred recruitment method in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.

Featuring a new preface by the author, this new edition of a seminal study will hit shelves just in time for the World War I Centennial.

The Citizen Soldiers: The Plattsburg Training Camp Movement, 1913-1920, by John Garry Clifford

Review "[A] scholarly and insightful account of the preparedness efforts of one elite group of civilians and army officers. In its breadth of research, liveliness of style, and perceptiveness of analysis this book clearly supersedes [previous histories] of the Plattsburg movement. It also makes a worth contribution toward a fuller understanding of the forces that helped to precipitate the dramatic changes in American military institutions in World War I."―American Historical Review

"[T]his book reveals the fine military history being written by younger American scholars. Garry Clifford has consulted materials at the Library of Congress and the National Archives, used the previously untapped papers of Grenville Clark at Dartmouth, and interviewed survivors of the Plattsburg Movement. He has given the movement a significant place in the story of how, in the early twentieth century, concerned American civilians and soldiers forged a new military manpower policy to replace the ineffective and inequitable nineteenth-century volunteer system."―Daniel R. Beaver, Journal of American History

"The Citizen Soldiers is a solid addition to the literature on 20th century preparedness."―Donald J. Mrozek, Military Affairs

"This highly readable book [. . .] is thoroughly researched. In the view of this reviewer, The Citizen Soldiers is a worthy recipient of the Frederick Jackson Turner Award."―James J. Hudson, Journal of the Illinois State Historical Society

"It is not hard to see why this book won the prestigious Frederick Jackson Turner Prize. It is a fine contribution to an understanding of the development of American military policy."―David W. Levy, Indiana Magazine of History

About the Author John Garry Clifford (1942–2014) was an American historian and professor of political science at the University of Connecticut. He is the coauthor of The First Peacetime Draft and America Ascendant.

By Lucy Lammermoor This book is deservedly re-published to coincide with the 100th commemoration of the United States' entry into World War I. Professor Clifford's thoroughly researched and well-written account explains the development of the Plattsburg movement, and why prominent Americans --Theodore Roosevelt and Grenville Clark, among others -- inspired and pushed the idea of training citizen-soldiers.My father was a Plattsburger in 1916 and in 1940. He served as an infantry officer in WW I and took great pride in his Plattsburg connection.

Great book, fun to read By Sunflower This award-winning history of the volunteers who foresaw the coming of U.S. involvement in World War I and the need for military training to prepare for the coming U.S. commitment to the European conflict, is a delightful read and is the most thoroughly researched book on the Plattsburgh Training Camps. Participants in the training later became important national leaders, including GrenvilleClark and Secretary of War Robert Patterson. It is published in honor of the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War I.

I don't know how the other reviews for this have been 5 stars, this book is a complete scam. I know nothing about programming and am eager to learn and after reading this "book" I still know nothing. This is not an exageration, if you do 10 minutes of research on Python and do three google searches; you will have amassed the knowledge contained in this "book." all the author did was give five definitions and instructions on installing the program. Just to let you know its 10 pages long...ABSOLUTLY PATHETIC...

By Romance Between The Sheets Please note this review may contain spoilers.Out Of The Game has been my favourite in the series so far, just as I hoped it would be. There's just something enjoyable about watching a bad boy fall and fall hard for the right woman.Meet Alex, resident playboy on the Barracudas team. It's a title he loves and works hard for each and every season. Until one night when he met Claire, Erin's older sister. Fresh from her separation from her cheating husband, she got cold feet during a heavy make-out session and bolted. But not before making a very memorable impression on Alex.Meeting up again for Tim and Erin's wedding, both aren't really surprised to feel that the sparks are still there. After convincing Claire she needs to run wild and have some fun, they hop on a plane for an impromptu holiday and hopefully a fling. But very quickly the fling becomes 'more', with both wanting to see exactly how far they could take the relationship. Not entirely sure of his feelings, their relationship is put to the test when an unexpected surprise and a career-threatening injury get thrown into the mix.I loved Alex and his sense of humour. His filthy mouth and his dirty talk was hot. But I really felt for him after his injury, and his resulting anger and actions were believable. I hated that he hurt Claire, but I understood his anger and his desire for self-destruction and why he lashed out the way he did. I liked how Claire became her own person after her divorce from Vic. She became a woman more interested in being herself than what she thought she needed to be for others. I liked that she started making a name for herself in the hockey league with her art events, and how she stood up for herself after Alex treated her like crap for so long.Again, the team camaraderie is really enjoyable to read and the prank they pulled on Alex was priceless. That scene had me laughing out loud. Now I'm left trying to figure out who could get the next story.

In the first two book of the In the Zone series, there was a very strong emotional core of every book, but this book in particular struck me as very strong. The story follows Alex, the resident playboy of the Barracudas team and how he comes to terms with having an actual relationship. His growth and development through the book absolutely fascinated me. His love interest is Claire, the sister of the love interest in On the Surface. Claire is recovering from a bad divorce of her ten year marriage that happened at the end of On the Surface. Her healing and getting back in to dating is good to read about as well, but I think Alex was by far the more interesting character. There is the normal hassling he receives from his teammates, running in to exes, and learning to share his life with another person. He is also dealing with issues from his past that really make you feel for him and hope he makes things work with Claire. It was fun, though, to see Claire grow into being a strong hockey girlfriend and learn to spread her wings after her divorce. She even organizes a fundraising event I though was awesome. You also get a better feel for the team dynamics in this book. It is interesting to get to know the other players a little better. I am hoping some of the others get a book soon. Hart and Jeremy also play a minor role in this book which was nice to see, but they are more prominent in Across the Line.Like the other books, there is a lot of hockey in it which is nice for fans. Granted, it’s not a huge lot, as it is a novella, but it is definitely a part of the story and it is integrated beautifully. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone looking for an intense, beautiful read for a day. It can be read as a stand-alone, but I would recommend reading On the Surface first. There are a few things you learn in it that makes things in this book a little more clear. This book parallels with the second book Across the Line. The story lines are occurring at the same time. It is definitely a good romance without tripping over into erotic, which is great for a romance novella. It is even hard for me to classify this as a novella as it is a rather long one, which I thoroughly appreciated with the strong development of the story.

By Jen Lazaris I’ve been a fan of the In the Zone series since it started, but Out of the Game has quickly become my favorite. They are all great books, but I feel Willoughby hit her stride and exceeded my expectations as a reader with this one.I always love books where the hardcore playboy falls head-over-heels for someone he didn’t quite expect, and this one didn’t disappoint.Alex is a hockey player known for his reputation with women, and Claire’s recently divorced from her cheating husband. They’re attracted to each other, but Alex knows he has to be careful in his approach with Claire. Claire wonders how she is going to protect her heart against his advances.Though the book told the journey of both characters, I will say Alex ripped my heart out during a few scenes in this book. It would have been easy to write him off as a simple character who loves hockey, women and having a good time. But he’s so much more than that.As a heroine, Clair is sweet, funny, strong and likeable. She only gets stronger as the book goes along, and she’s a really good match for Alex. What really came across while reading this book was how much these two made each other better people when they were together. They pushed each other physically and emotionally through little issues and huge, life-changing ones. And oh, the issues! I found myself holding my breath at one point in the book, and my eyes tearing up at another point. It was a total roller coaster ride.Willoughby has a very strong author voice, and her books are sexy, witty and emotionally charged. It's easy to get invested in the characters and their relationships in this series. I’m looking forward to reading more. Five stars.

So, if you're just starting out with development, chances are you want a book with code written in Swift. The book seems to have some nice features to it and the authors discuss interesting topics, however I was discouraged by seeing the choice on programming language given that Swift is the new way to go.

Signs Preceding the End of the World is one of the most arresting novels to be published in Spanish in the last ten years. Yuri Herrera does not simply write about the border between Mexico and the United States and those who cross it. He explores the crossings and translations people make in their minds and language as they move from one country to another, especially when there’s no going back.Traversing this lonely territory is Makina, a young woman who knows only too well how to survive in a violent, macho world. Leaving behind her life in Mexico to search for her brother, she is smuggled into the USA carrying a pair of secret messages – one from her mother and one from the Mexican underworld.

Signs Preceding the End of the World, by Yuri Herrera

Review "Yuri Herrera is Mexico’s greatest novelist. His spare, poetic narratives and incomparable prose read like epics compacted into a single perfect punch – they ring your bell, your being, your soul. Signs Preceding the End of the World delivers a darkly mythological vision of the U.S. as experienced by the 'not us' that is harrowing and fierce. The profoundly dignified, mind-boggling Makina, our guide and translator, is the heroine who redeems us all: she is the Truth." Francisco Goldman, author of Say Her Name"Yuri Herrera must be a thousand years old. He must have travelled to hell, and heaven, and back again. He must have once been a girl, an animal, a rock, a boy, and a woman. Nothing else explains the vastness of his understanding." Valeria Luiselli, author of Faces in the Crowd"Herrera never forgets the turbulent and moving humanity of his protagonist: adroit, angry, ineluctable, Makina is destined to become one of the essential characters of Mexico’s new literature . . . Herrera creates a radically new language . . . and condenses into a few pages what other authors need hundreds to convey." Jorge Volpi, author of In Search of Klingsor"Yuri Herrera's Signs Preceding the End of the World is a masterpiece, a haunting and moving allegory about violence and the culture built to support and celebrate that violence. Of the writers of my generation, the one I most admire is Yuri Herrera." Daniel Alarcón, author of At Night We Walk in Circles"Signs Preceding the End of the World by Yuri Herrera confirms his status as a storyteller skilled at creating intense storylines and using original language. It is as adept at depicting wretched conditions as it is of elevating the humble and everyday to symbolic dimensions. And that symbolism, to be sure, has something of the Kafkaesque." Arturo García Ramos, ABC"It’s fair to say that Yuri Herrera follows in the footsteps of compatriot Juan Rulfo, perhaps the master par excellence of creating limbos, spectral spaces in which the characters—real Schrödinger’s cats—reside halfway between the living and the dead." Javier Moreno, Quimera"The book amazes with the precise and persuasive beauty of its words. New words are created or transformed in order to tell what cannot be told." María José Obiol, El País"[T]his marvellously rich, slim novel is working on many levels . . . Herrera’s great achievement lies in elevating the harsh epic of “crossing” to the “other side” to soaring myth. There are allusions to Odysseus, Orpheus and the Styx, the river of Greek mythology that was a border to the Underworld; as well as Mesoamerican stories of shapeshifting and rebirth . . . Herrera’s metaphors grasp the freedom, and the alarming disorientation, of transition and translation . . . Translator Lisa Dillman has found a language both blunt and lyrical for Herrera’s many neologisms." Maya Jaggi, The Guardian"Short, suspenseful . . . outlandish and heartbreaking." New York Times"Herrera’s writing is poetic and defamiliarizing; translator Lisa Dillman has done well to capture his neologisms, which shift the setting into the surreal . . . In this legend-rich book, to immigrate is to enter forever the land of the shades." Sam Sacks, Wall Street Journal"Indeed, the nine short chapters tell a very straightforward quest story, and Herrera plants dangerous criminals and vigilant border patrollers around every corner. But it’s the imagery, by turns moving and nightmarish, that makes this brief book memorable . . . This is a haunting book that delivers a strange, arresting experience." Publishers Weekly"Francisco Goldman’s declaration on the cover of this book, that Yuri Herrera is Mexico’s greatest novelist, sold me. I admire Goldman’s own work, so the recommendation couldn’t have come from a more trusted source." Jonathon Sturgeon, Flavorwire "This is a gravity greater than earth's norm. Incidents, phrasings that suggest the novel could shift to another realm continue. They are pregnant with potentiality, and tension of potentiality is one of life's great pleasures, even, especially, in the discomfort that comes with it. It creates only one of the ways that Signs Preceding the End of the World holds you in rapture . . . Signs is a novel of language, meant to be translated because it is so aware of the journeys language takes, from one to another, and within their boundaries." P.T. Smith, Bookslut"This is a gorgeous, crisp little thing. And although Signs . . . is no epic – accounting for chapter breaks it clocks in at under 100 short pages – Yuri Herrera has managed to achieve such extraordinary scope, of space and meaning, without any sense of hurry or clutter … Signs... is an important work, given the tenor of the immigration debate in the US and internationally. Herrera and Makina make a mockery of old-order American patriotism, which is easy to do but tough to actually pull off. The whole book is in fact a tiny exercise in bold and clever writing done with verve." Angus Sutherland, The Skinny"[A] short, brutal, urgent missive of a book . . . Herrera’s prose, as translated by Lisa Dillman, has some of McCarthy’s doomy intonations, his terse impressionism, and his obvious debts to Beckett, Hemingway and Faulkner . . . There’s the same nervy hovering around the edge of allegory and never quite committing to the jump. And the landscape, of course, is the same … But Herrera is—well—better . . . Herrera writes literature. Signs Preceding packs a fractal complexity into its furiously concentrated sentences; it’s slangy, impish, iterative, slightly manic even at its saddest. Herrera has everything McCarthy doesn’t: humour, kindness, politics that don’t stink." Pete Mitchell, The Quietus"Signs Preceding the End of the World is filled with layers of meaning and symbolism, with Herrera’s brilliant command of visual metaphors effortlessly weaving together a host of narrative threads … his use of complex symbolism throughout, and his gift for transforming abstract idioms and metaphors into concrete images makes Signs Preceding the End of the World a worthy examination of what it is to ‘cross the border." — Debjani Biswas-Hawkes, Literateur"Signs Preceding the End of the World is one of the most arresting novels to be published in Spanish in the last ten years. Yuri Herrera does not simply write about the border between Mexico and the United States and those who cross it. He explores the crossings and translations people make in their minds and language as they move from one country to another, especially when there’s no going back." Literalab"Yuri Herrera is one of Mexico’s proudest literary exports, and his Signs Preceding the End of the World … reads like scripture, the received words of an all-knowing wise man." Jane Graham, The Big Issue"Perky crowd-funded publishers & Other Stories are rapidly gaining a name for unearthing hidden gems of world literature and this novel by Mexican author Yuri Herrera can only enhance that reputation. Set on the Mexican/US border, it tells a deceptively simple tale that is simultaneously beguiling and harrowing . . . In nine short chapters and barely 100 pages, Herrera gives us the beating heart of his protagonist. Resourceful and feisty, Makina pursues her twin tasks with determination but with a shrewd appreciation of her chances of success." Peter Whittaker, New Internationalist"The story’s tough young heroine is Makina . . . The author has created Makina both street-smart and observant and we can see how she is capable of defending herself. We hear too, in her inner voice, the by-play of the two languages, what she calls ‘latin’ and ‘anglo’, and how they can fuse into a third with varying proportions according to circumstances . . . Talented, polyglot translator Lisa [Dillman] has risen to the challenge by creating a language that is not jarringly americanised and still conveys the thought processes of a latin-tongued protagonist in an exciting English translation. This is another example of the sterling work of the publisher & Other Stories." Michael Johnston, Akanos Publishing"In Signs Preceding the End of the World, Yuri Herrera has given Spanish-language literature the code we needed to name the birth of the new border cultures; the creation of a new world that is changeable, volatile, sweet and terrible." Ignacio Padilla"Both author and translator deserve praise for creating and successfully interpreting this distinctive voice, which stays with you long after the book is finished." Workshy Fop"Herrera has written a novel that connects the contemporary with the timeless." Jason DeYoung, 3:am"Herrera’s work is a double edged sword, poetic for its sparseness, but leaving the reader hungry for more. A highly-rewarding gulp of a novella, jam-packed with all the intrigue of an epic." Eloise Stevens, Sounds and Colours"It might be a re-telling of the Odyssey at the Mexican border." Janet Potter, The Millions"Yuri Herrera’s Signs Preceding the End of the World is one of those rare volumes that manages to explore language in a new way, tell a compelling story, and create memorable characters all at the same time . . . The author’s immense talent is evident in each page, in just about every sentence of the novel . . . The author employs language and a literary perspective you won’t soon forget, his images haunting like a dream." Alina Cohen, The Rumpus"Stunning . . . It’s not the story itself, but Herrera’s brilliant telling of it, his ability to capture his subject’s thoughts, fears, and desires and so eloquently convey all that she’s experiencing, that will leave you spellbound, aching for more." Typographical era"To write in such a short and simple style, yet to deliver something as moving and memorable takes great skill." David Dickinson, The Journal "The narrative invites reflection on the migrant experience and cultural difference; it also supplies the excitement of an adventure with gangsters, guns and false leads . . . Yuri Herrera combines a dreamlike setting with vigorous style." Anthony Cummins, Times Literary Supplement"Two words: Read it. In nine short chapters you encounter all the magic of Alice in Wonderland, the darkness of Dante’s Inferno, the dystopia of McCarthy’s The Road … The language is wonderful, at times completely original, to capture the feel of the original." JM Schreiber for Guardian Books Blog"There’s grit, and there’s an attention to detail, but reality drifts in through filters throughout. It gets under your skin in weird ways." Tobias Carroll, Vol1Brooklyn"A profoundly important book, and one of the few such works to also have the distinction of being a profoundly enjoyable book." Pop Matters"In its hundred-odd pages, Signs Preceding the End of the World manages to be many things at once: an allegory, a dark myth, an epic, a compelling meditation on language." Adam Levy, Music and Literature"This is a novel of carefully rendered details, given to the reader gracefully, as if they are simple or casual observations . . . The brilliance of this novel is that, as grounded as it is in physical experiences, it is this psychological space that it most inhabits . . . A novel whose thinness belies its depth, Signs Preceding the End of the World makes me rejoice that more of Herrerra’s work will soon be published for English readers. It is such a blessing that this work, first published in Spanish six years ago, has made the crossing." Literary Review US"Signs is full of exhilarating moments, sharp, economic turns, both at plot and sentence level . . . Personal and expansive, dense but compact, Signs Preceding the End of the World offers its readers a timeless and timely epic in miniature." Biblioklept"A dazzling little thing, containing so much more than the width of its spine should allow. I am in awe-filled love with its heroine: Makina is a vibrantly real presence in a shadowy world of constant threat; her voice perfectly rendered; her unflappable poise tested, but never broken." Gayle Lazda, London Review Bookshop, London

Makina is the reluctant cross-border traveler and heroine. She is tough but passive when need be. Really, she is Clint Eastwood encapsulated in the form of a young woman navigating a border crossing. The writing style is lyrical and there are elements of magic, but the use of the vernacular keeps the story current and relatable. I love the lack of quotation marks in the story. Someone smarter than me will have to explain how this moves the story/journey along, but to me it made the book read more like poetry. How deep will you plunge into this book? 114 pages later and I've adopted the term "verse" as used in the translation of the book, like you pick up particular words and phrases from a good friend. Ok, stop reading this review, and read the book!

13 of 16 people found the following review helpful. easy to cross By Mark Aronson Borders challenge. The hard ones are two sided, divided by walls, iron spikes, barbed wire, guard towers. Others are soft and shift, they meander in attitude at the river’s edge, easy to cross, when no one cares. Still many are not obviously one or the other, like the vague but definitive line that separates Mexico from its northern neighbor the USA.Yuri Herrera’s nine brief chapters in “Signs Preceding the End of the World,” explores the US – Mexican border in magical, mythical and meaningful ways. Herrera’s protagonist Makina, stands as a female Orpheus, thrust into the underworld in both literal and figurative ways as she makes a crossing north in search of her lost brother. Her journey is aided by the host of characters one might expect to find in such journeys; boatmen, dealers, coyotes, thieves, border guards, “patriots,” and the ever present anonymous yet sympathetic peoples who have survived this contemporary middle passage and understand her journey’s goal. They help their sister on her way.Makina’s intelligence, bilingualism and street smarts facilitate her quest, as she is able to translate and negotiate the many riddles and personalities that aim to confound her mission. She knows when to fight, when to duck, and when to cross her fingers. The story’s Sphinx, arrives in the guise of a patriot vigilante border patrol, whose virulent hatred of migrants, is subdued with the direct forceful confusion of her crossings’ explanation.Makina offers the patriot his riddle’s answer complete with its neither yes nor no ambiguous edge:“We are to blame for this destruction, we who don’t speak your tongue and don’t know how to keep quiet either. We who didn’t come by boat, who dirty up your doorsteps with our dust, who break your barbed wire. We who came to take your jobs, who dream of wiping your s***, who long to work all hours. We who fill your shiny clean streets with the smell of food, who brought you violence you’d never known, who deliver your dope, who deserve to be chained by neck and feet. We who are happy to die for you, what else could we do? We, the ones who are waiting for who knows what. We, the dark, the short, the greasy, the shifty, the fat, the anemic. We the barbarians.”Herrera’s story is a provocatively rich read, enigmatic and forceful. The English translation is wonderfully navigated by Lisa Dilman who has provided, and explained at story’s end, an earnest gist of the Mexican vernacular Spanish, avoiding the pitfalls of direct word for word matching, instead suggesting meanings into the English she offers as a poetic inquisitive take on Herrera’s contemporary story. This a good book, and then some.

7 of 9 people found the following review helpful. A great read. By D Cluster A tremendously inventive, unusual, and affecting view of Mexico-US border crossing in the broadest sense of that term -- and an adventure in mysterious realms that I couldn't put down -- and a heroine I won't forget. I read it first in the Spanish original, which translator Lisa Dillman does a highly impressive job of re-imagining in English. A great read.

WELCOME …to the third volume of Admissionado’s 50 MBA Essays That Worked. The aim of this 50 Essays collection is two-fold: First and foremost, we want to show you snapshots of a successful applicant; how their stories fly off the page, and how they present airtight arguments for why THEY deserve that coveted spot at their target MBA program. Second, but equally important, we want to show that these winning essays rarely (never!) start out perfectly. It takes work. And patience. A quick overview of who we are and what we do: Our clients are overachievers, just like us. They are aiming for Top 15 MBA programs and, therefore, they are competing with the best the world has to offer. Each client teams up with an expert MBA consultant on our team (also a graduate of a Top 15 MBA program but, more importantly, an expert on the admissions process) as well as an essay specialist. This “power couple” guides the process from start to finish, balancing strategic insights and applicant profile positioning with the challenges of bringing out those insights through clear, well-paced, well-organized prose. Draft after draft, we pound and slash and kick and shred and shape and reshape. The result? Essays that our clients have authored entirely on their own, with smart guidance from us, which lead to admits. Enclosed are 50 sample essays from applicants now earning their MBA at places like Wharton, Stanford, HBS, etc. While the finished essay speaks for itself, we have also provided quick insights on each essay’s effectiveness. Each sample is followed by a high-level diagnosis from our MBA strategy experts on WHY the essay turned heads. You’ll also see a structural breakdown from our essay specialists of how each component of the essay strengthens the overall argument, while highlighting specific examples straight from the page. But wait, there’s more! We selected nine of those essays to reveal a little more of the process that led to those final results. We show you the very first draft and a sample of our feedback. Then we show you the final draft, including commentary from our MBA experts and essay specialists. Through these nine samples, you’ll see how each essay starts out as a piece of uncut marble, but ends up transformed into a lifelike sculpture. (Bear in mind, in order to make these easy to read, we’ve cut out some of the detailed feedback.) If you’re curious to see what that might look like, we have included an “unabridged” first edit at the end, so you can get a glimpse into our process. MBA essay prompts are challenging, folks. Boy do we remember. We have been through exactly what you’re going through. But we lived to tell the tale, and so will you. We applaud your ambition and hope this volume gives you a teaspoon of inspiration to accompany you on your exciting journey.

A tremendously helpful tool in the arduous b-school application process By Happy Camper This handy volume breaks MBA essays down into 5 categories -- goals, leadership/success stories, "why school?"-type prompts, personal narratives, and other essays. These basically cover all the different kinds of essay prompts out there. The sample essays make for great reads, but the best part of this book is the commentary before and after each essay, including things to keep in mind, structural notes, a summary of why the piece is effective, and selected quotes that create an emotional connection with the reader and make the essay memorable with the admissions committee. Some applicants highlighted in the book have launched successful businesses in college or are running nonprofit ventures in their spare time. For those of us who don't have these kinds of accomplishments on our resume, the notes surrounding each essay are pure gold as they show you how to make your own stories shine.Hard to imagine a better investment of $7.(And, in case you're wondering: yes, I'm getting lots of interviews. I'll let you know how things shake out :-)

This e-book was so helpful to me - they really help you figure out how to make your own application stand out, especially if you come from a really competitive group like I do, with tons of people who look like you "on paper." You always wonder what the people who are getting in are writing - and this book shows you exactly that in a way that helps you do it yourself. I worked with them as a client as well, and there is no substitute for the kind of one-on-one expert guidance you get as a client. This book is just a taste of the excellent support you can expect from them.

Applying to business school is a long and stressful process and this book takes away some of the mystery behind what schools are looking for. Just by reading a few of the essays I was able to get an idea of how I wanted to present my stories in a thoughtful and memorable way. These essays obviously helped someone else get into a top program so I put myself into the adcom's shoes and thought about why these worked and how I wanted go about to tackling my own. If you are like me and have no idea how to start tackling the MBA admission essays, then this is a great place to start!

All it took was one touch from a stranger’s hand to change everything. The Fera are blessed by the gods with one mate, one person who will till the end of eternity complete them. Yale isn’t really ready for that yet. After finally getting away from his overbearing family, Yale is ready to party hard, steal hearts and run his city to the ground. What he doesn’t expect is to accidentally brush by an old lion and have his mating mark appear. Old, scarred and tired, Notre wanted nothing less than to be mated in his old age and certainty not to the hyperactive pup he is stuck with. Going against the gods themselves to break the bond, this unlikely duo might just find out why fate gifted them to each other. But is a centuries’ wide age gap traversable? And will Yale ever shut up? In 45,000 words of pure adorableness, these six short stories tell the tale of a loving puppy and his nurturing lion.

A story out of the ordinary - 3,5 stars By JustMe I am not sure how to label this story - either weird or ingenious (or both for that matter). And it reminded me about some japanese cartoons I have seen.Anyway - this is a world where animals can take human form. Notre is an almost ancient lion, with a history of victories in the Colisseum and a trail of previous lovers. He is a vinner in all ways, except magic where his fated mate Yale is better. Yale is 30+, but still a pup (I think it's said he is a husky). An adopted child of a grizzly mamma, talking all the time.Besides magic, there is a goddess with three personalities keeping a human as a pet, her demi-god son, a jealous, conniving woman and other often strange beings. Yale is thrown into a hidden world filled with crystal where the most beautiful things are the most dangerous, but where he/they find their son.I found this story hilarious, it made me chuckle the most of the time. But I also felt it was part of something else - as if there was something that preceded this story, and probably also continued it.

By Rayssa This story was way out of the norm of the usual shifter plot, but you know what I actually enjoyed it. the writer has quite an imagination and at times almost childish but then again that's probably what made me so fascinated by it. Don't get me wrong it has its flaws and because Of how kinda quirky and somewhat cheesy this story is, it's not for everyone. But it did draw me in and I'm usually someone likes that likes to read the hardcore mm stories, so to catch my attention I was surprise. if you want to read a nice story with the magical adventure then I can recommend you reading this book, just keep an open mind and you'll be fine and will most likely enjoy this book.
