And the first 2 are really good.Great twisting together of 2 very different cases that somehow come together naturally. One involves a group of New World exiles plotting their return. The other focuses on a poor spinster making her way from one rich relation to the next.Vernon and Carswell have their usual serious woman troubles in this outing. Vernon's is a stunner. Carswell, meanwhile, has to deal with several extraordinary women who all teach him a great deal. As usual, Smart integrates Vernon and Carswell's personal travails into the narrative to advance the plot with great effect.Lord Rothingham so forgets himself at one point and so mortifies poor Carswell that he flees.Pacing is great as usual. Lots to ponder, but never for long before something else breaks loose.Vernon and Carswell don't have any blowups with each other in this book, which is too bad, but the lack made sense given the plot twists. Besides there's too much going on! Nonetheless, their occasional prickly confrontations in the earlier books were great reading.

By Linda Barclay Delightful characters, interesting interactions between the characters and wonderful story lines - each 1 better than the last. Can't wait for the next installment. The mysteries are full of twist and turns keeping you anxious to find what happens next. I love historical mysteries and have many good and lots of bad - this is near the top of the good pile. Read and enjoy!

An Entertaining Read By DRRD The third book in the series, this one packs a lot of punches.There's a lot of things going on by the end of the story, and what starts off as what should be a simple mystery unfolds with a lot of personal things for Dr. Carswell and Major Vernon to deal with. Not only the mysteries, but the unfolding events in their personal lives really kept me reading until the end. I really like how the two main character work together, and manage to be supportive of each other. And the fact that they sometimes see situations differently, a lot of the time because of the difference in age and experience, just makes their friendship more interesting. Especially when a friend needs to be truthful, no matter how it may hurt. These two can trust each other enough to accept that.And I mostly like the ending. Some situations I wasn't fond of, but considering the times could understand how and why certain decisions were made. I hope to see more of the two in the future.On the (small) down side, there still are some editing glitches that need to be caught and corrected, but not anything terribly distracting.
