0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The topic is very interesting but the book doesn't deliver... By Dimitrios I bought this book because I found the topic extremely interesting. Mr Porter tried really hard to prove that despite the fact that modern technology has shrinked distance, the "strategic space" has not shrinked and in fact it has increased. The arguments though are not well founded. For example, Mr Porter considers that the USA is safer today than we think because checks on the borders are harder and the terrorists can't easily get into the country - and this means that the US strategic space has increased because the US mainland is indeed further front the potential danger than in the past where only the oceans protected it. There are also some trivial matters well known to everybody - i.e. the maps usually do not give the true measure of distance because they don't include all the crucial data on them, or that in 1982 Margaret Thatcher thought that the British Task Force would reach Falklands Islands in just 3 days (!) while it took it 3 weeks. The book includes some case studies like a possible Chinese invasion in Taiwan and a new version of the Falklands War in the near future. The senarios analysed though do not have anything new or revealing in them and they don't support the main argument of the author that "the global village" is really a myth. Modern fighter aircraft cover greater distances and carry heavier loads of very accurate missiles and bombs, and although the speed of the warships has not increased dramatically in the ensuing decades this is not enough for a whole book to be written. Also, Mr Porter's arguments considering cyberwarfare, terrorism and drones are not convincing. I agree with him that the Western governments worry too much about potential threats, but this fact doesn't prove that they are victims of a strategic myth. The physical space as well the strategic space HAVE indeed shrinked in my opinion due to modern technologies, since a modern pilot is able to strike targets in Afghanistan with terrific precision and in real time, while sitting comfortably in a chair in Nebraska and not risking himself. The fundamental axioms of war remain valid of course but this is not the same as declaring that geographical and strategic space retains the same value as always. This book is a nice try (although the print is too small and rather tiring for the reader), but unfortunately doesn't deliver.
