Excerpt from The Duchess of PaduaMarket-place in Padua. In the background the cathedral built in the Romanesque style of black and white marble. A marble staircase leads to the portal of the building. At the foot of the steps are two huge stone lions. The houses at both sides of the stage have gay awnings before the windows and are enclosed by stone arcades. At the right is the fountain, representing a sea god in green bronze reclining on a couch, blowing a horn. Around the fountain is a stone bench. The bells of the cathedral are ringing, and the citizens, men, women and children, are flocking in.Guido Ferranti and Ascanio Cristofano.Ascanio. As sure as I live, Guido, I won't go a step farther, or my breath will fail - for cursing. Such a damnable will o' the wisp wandering! (Sits on the bench by the fountain.)Guido. It must be here.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. About the Author Oscar Wilde was born on October 16, 1854, to the Irish nationalist and writer Speranza Wilde and the doctor William Wilde. After graduating from Oxford in 1878, Wilde moved to London, where he became notorious for his sharp wit and flamboyant style of dress. Though he was publishing plays and poems throughout the 1880s, it wasn t until the late 1880s and early 1890s that his work started to be received positively. In 1895, Oscar Wilde was tried for homosexuality and was convicted and sentenced to two years in prison. Tragically, this downfall came at the height of his career, as his plays, An Ideal Husband "and The Importance of Being Earnest, "were playing to full houses in London. He was greatly weakened by the privations of prison life, and moved to Paris after his sentence. Wilde died in a hotel room, either of syphilis or complications from ear surgery, in Paris, on November 30, 1900.

By Nice Person I see that one reviewer has done a good job explaining the play, so I wont do that again, just give you my feedback.1) this is a great edition, if you were wondering2) you are not likely to see this play as most of Wildes' plays these days that are produced are the well known ones (and nothing wrong with that) so it is very worth reading3) the play is full of Shakespeare and its a joy to read and clue in to the different Shakespearean undercurrents, like a cultural detective - lots of fun4) its Oscar Wilde, and if you have not read or see it, you owe it to yourself to do so!Well recommended!

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Known as the Italian Play By Peter John Pols This is a treasure - often never seen by average audiences, so its a joy to read. It was Wilds first major work put on, but not really discovered until after Lady W's Fan. This is Wilde exploring self-denying - as he was at the time, at least from a public point of view. Many deep emotions are explored here - from love and hatred, revenge and revulsion.Great cover and great edition, very good for the Wilde fan and collector.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Wilde's way with words is so impressive, that the play begs to be presented. By Christine Richardson What a joy to discover this play! I was puttering about on Amazon and purchasing a copy of The Importance of Being Earnest for a friend for their birthday, when I found this Wilde play. It's not at all like Earnest, and should not be read like a social comedy, however its genius is still Wilde, clearly. The major theme is emotions, love, revenge, and hatred - and they are not treated in a funny way, quite the reverse. Still, the dialogue is the gift that we get when we read the Duchess, Wilde's way with words is so impressive, that the play begs to be presented. But, I'm happy to just read it again, knowing that since the folks who buy tickets to Cats wont be paying to watch The Duchess of Padua and therefore it will not go on.The Importance of Being Earnest: A Trivial Comedy for Serious People
