From the author of Make it Count comes the first novel in the In Focus series… With his college graduation gown expertly pitched into the trash, Justin Akron is ready for the road trip he planned with his best friend Landry— and ready for one last summer of escape from his mother’s controlling grip. Climbing into the Winnebago his father left him, they set out across America in search of the sites his father had captured through the lens of his Nikon. As an aspiring photographer, Justin can think of no better way to honor his father’s memory than to scatter his ashes at the sites he held sacred. And there’s no one Justin would rather share the experience with more than Landry. But Justin knows he can’t escape forever. Eventually he’ll have to return home and join his mother’s Senate campaign. Nor can he escape the truth of who he is, and the fact that he’s in love with his out-and-proud travel companion.Admitting what he wants could hurt his mother’s conservative political career. But with every click of his shutter and every sprinkle of ash, Justin can’t resist Landry’s pull. And when the truth comes into focus, neither is prepared for the secrets the other is hiding.Megan Erickson worked as a journalist covering real-life dramas before she decided she liked writing her own endings better and switched to fiction. She lives in Pennsylvania with her husband, two kids and two cats. When she's not tapping away on her laptop, she's probably listening to the characters in her head who won't stop talking.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Amazing Book! A Must Read. : ) By Todd Thompson My ARC review on Goodreads (with photos):[...]-------------------------------------- "Trust The Focus" is my first read from Megan Erickson, but will definitely *not* be my last. The writing was both touching and poignant, without coming across as pompous or flowery. This story is first and foremost about growing up and becoming your own person, but it's also about letting go of someone who meant the world to you, while clinging tightly to the one who still does. There was a huge potential for the book to drown the reader in a river of angst; however, the grief for one loving and understanding departed parent and anger toward the all-controlling and judgmental remaining parent were handled without an excess of wallowing or whining, which I very much appreciated. Our main character, Justin, is a recent college graduate with a degree in Political Science (which he hated, but studied to placate his mother) and a minor in Photography (which is his true passion, thanks to his photographer father.)Justin's father, Charlie, dies in his Sophomore year, before he's able to take Justin to the sites of his favorite photography shoots. So literally moments after graduation Justin hops into his father's 1972 Winnebago Brave RV camper, named "Sally", to spread his ashes at those places on a 12-stop road trip across the US. My dad’s atlases were stacked in the cabinets above our heads, all of them dog-eared and coffee-stained. My father insisted on using them, meticulously taking note of landmarks he wanted to photograph, the best routes, where to get the best angle for his shot. Lan had been there when I found them, tears streaming down my face as I read notes like, “Tell Justin I saw a tailless squirrel” and “Bring Justin to see this waterfall.” He drew doodles in the margins, circled 69 anywhere he could, and wrote a “Ha-ha” next to it. God, I loved him.Justin's manipulative, Senatorial candidate mother is not pleased about the trip to begin with, but is especially displeased that Justin is taking his tattooed, pierced and very gay best friend, Landry, along for the ride.Landry grew up in a boy's home before being adopted by a very loving couple, who still were unable to quiet his inner demons. Nothing ever could. Until he's bullied on the playground in 6th grade and meets his center, Justin. I thought I liked girls, but something about Landry drew me to him. I couldn’t take my eyes off of him. And when his pale skin flushed red, those eyes flashed sparks, and he bobbed on his toes, I knew the skinny guy was going to blow his top and get into something he would regret. My father was a physically affectionate guy, so I reacted on instinct and grabbed Landry’s hair, pressing our foreheads together while I clamped my other hand where his neck met his shoulder. I stared into his eyes and willed his breath to match mine. He gripped my wrist and locked onto my stare. I didn’t say anything, but kept myself present in order to bring him back from the brink, anchor him to the ground before he took flight. The taunts from the kids faded into the background until the words were white noise, and the only sounds were our breaths. The anger ebbed from his eyes. He tugged against my grip and I let go of his hair and pulled back my head. He held my gaze, a whole story flashing behind the depths of his baby blues. That scene alone took my breath away and immediately convinced me of Erickson's ability to create characters with soul-deep, heart-felt connections. I was sold on Justin and Landry's complete and utter inevitability, then and there.Landry blogs photos and updates over the course of the road trip and with each stop, the boys get closer, until long-held admissions of feelings erupt and their connection grows even deeper. “I’ve always wanted it to be you.” Those words melted my bones and my brain. I hugged him to me, wanting to fuse his skin with mine. “I’ve always wanted it to be you, too.”But as I mentioned, this story is as much about growing up as it is about falling in love. And closeted, fearful Justin has a lot of growing to do, so after his second major screw up with Landry, Justin has to finish out the journey under his own sails.Although hard to read, I really appreciated the fact that Justin finally came to realize that before he could build a happy future with Landry, he had to get his own house in order first. So he made a list... 1. Finish trip 2. Keep blogging 3. Come out. Guns blazing. Like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. 4. Get Landry back. 5. Figure out what the hell to do come September. I cut a small square of duct tape and stuck the piece of paper on the dashboard. I wanted my goals front and center. Sally would hold me accountable.Justin's commitment to checking items off his list was very inspiring, mainly because he was working on them for himself. And *if* (pronounced "when", because he was seriously motivated) he got Landry back, well, that just would be the icing on the cake. Really, really great icing. : )So due to that commitment and motivation, we get our happy ending, with an amazing scene at the last stop in Maine to scatter the remainder of Justin's father's ashes. There is a bit of last minute drama thrown into the mix as the boys venture home to Pennsylvania, which really helps tie all of the book's remaining loose ends up into a nice, perfect, little bow.The book does have a fully flushed-out ending and I really couldn't have asked for anything else from this book, so it's a full 5 stars from me on this one.

It has an interesting premise of the road trip to honour the memory of Justin's father, and I generally like friends-to-lovers stories, but this one just didn't soar emotionally.I think one of the problems is that the best part of any romance (the falling in love and realising that you're in love part) has already occurred before the book starts. We are given some backstory, but when the trip begins the characters' feelings have already evolved; they just have to tell each other. The author tells us over and over again how strong their feelings are but I didn't get much of a sense of their love from their interactions. In fact Justin is thoughtless and cruel to Landry, and no matter how hemmed in he feels by the future or how scared he is of coming out, I didn't believe in his love.Erickson's writing is fairly pedestrian and downright clunky in places. It was easy to read but errors of grammar and vocabulary would sometimes pull me out of the story. I think better prose and more grown-up behaviour from Justin could have made this material more emotionally involving. There are plenty of good ideas here but somehow it didn't come together in a satisfying whole.

By Kelly ~BookCrushin Trust the Focus is not just a friends to lovers contemporary romance. It is not just a road trip of discovery. It is not just an GLBT book. Trust the Focus is all of those things and more. It is very different than some of the LGBT books I have read in my past; and I have read a few, mainly because I am gay (shocker, right?!). I think everyone needs to read at least one gay romance in their lifetime, just like I still read many heterosexual romances, and I can honestly say that I would recommend Trust the Focus to be that book! It spans many genres and I think anyone who loves a well-crafted love story will devour this book! This story of the post-college graduation road-trip, the last summer before growing up all rang very real and true to me. We all need that last run at freedom before we have to settle down and get a job. I know I had my post-graduation freak out, I drove all around the country, even hitchhiked a little. I withdrew from grad school during my exploration…and well I was also trying on my sexuality for size at this time too. Confused the crap out of my family that’s for sure. However, sometimes you make the best decisions at the rashest times. Nonetheless, Justin needed a lot more from this trip. It was a chance to say goodbye to his father who passed away and it was also a chance to determine who he really is and if he wanted to continue to hide his true passions in life and take the easy road already laid out before him.Justin loves photography, just like his father, and he wanted to take this journey to honor his father’s life & work. But being in close proximity with his best friend, Landry, he has to come to grips with what he really wants in life. Landry also knows some things, like Jus is talented with his camera and he hopes this trip will encourage him to explore his passion. They both grieve for the loss of Justin’s father but they also gain a deeper understanding about themselves along the way. These characters are profound, albeit frustrating at times, and they feel like my best friends! This book had me running a gamut of emotions. It was just so perfectly sad, funny, emotional, and damn sexy. OK…are you wondering if you can find a love story between two men sexy? Well let me tell you it’s even harder for a gay girl, and let me tell you it is really, really sexy; let me scream it at you because IT IS SO FRIGGIN’ HOTT!! Did you hear me? These two boys are sexy mofo’s! I wish I had a #JusLan all for myself! *fans self* Again, this isn’t erotica, this isn’t porn, this is a heart breaking love story. So get your tissues and chocolates ready because you will need them after this book wrecks you (in a good way).Trust the Focus is a page turner, I read it so fast I had to force myself to stop reading just so I could enjoy it for longer and so I saved the ending for the next night because I didn’t want it to end. I just can’t handle how much I loved #JusLan together; so move over Alec & Kat (Make it Count) because I have a new Megan Erickson book couple to love forever! Well who knows maybe Megan’s next couple will usurp #JusLan. I don’t know much about the next book in this series as I just found out from a tweet by Megan that there will be another book called Focus On Me (In Focus #2)!5 fan-freaking-tastic stars!! I feel like I haven’t even scratched the surface of how amazing this book is…but take one thing away from this review and that is that I LOVED THIS BOOK! This has been my favorite read so far in 2015! I am sure you will see it on a lot of lists this year because it is just that good! Do yourself a favor and read Trust the Focus…like tonight.Thank you to Penguin Group/Berkley for the eARC copy of Trust the Focus from Netgalley in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.
