The Golden Age of Liner travel was from the early 1900s to the 1950s, a period dominated by black and white photography, with little colour views. William H Miller and Anton Logvinenko show off colour views if the magnificent ships, from the Mauretania and Lusitania to the German four stackers, as well as Olympic and Titanic and the crack liners of the 1920s and 1930s, including Paris, Normandie and Queen Mary. Experience the glamour of liner travel as it was for the Edwardians and through the 1920s and 1930s, in colour, as never seen before. The great transatlantic liners were often photographed in their home ports, as well as at sea, and the images here give an idea of the splendour that was ocean liner travel in the golden age of shipping.

Fascinating process applied to historic photos By Charlie While some might decry "colorizing" black-and-white photos of long-gone liners, this amazing technology, done exceptionally well in this book, brings these great ships to life again. Ocean liner historian Bill Miller provides his usual excellent text, always fascinating and well-researched. Recommended.

Logvinenko went through a tedious process re-creating each original black and white photo By Wayne Bokum Although I already own a dozen or so of Bill Miller's Dover books on ocean liners, I couldn't resist picking up this colorized version of almost every famous liner from the last century. These old black and white photos have been provided a vibrant new dimension in the colorization process. It is evident that Mr. Logvinenko went through a tedious process re-creating each original black and white photo. The results are stunning and believable. As this is essentially a photo book with captions, the only real text is the Foreword and the Introduction. If you are looking for the myriad technical details and stories behind each of these ships you will have to look elsewhere. Nevertheless, this book serves a purpose in preserving and bringing new life to these grand ladies of the sea. My only hope is that this collaboration will continue and the result will be additional books published using the same process.

A number of the photos will be easily recognizable to aficionados of ocean liner history. But seeing the liners as they actually looked makes a big difference and more than justifies adding the book to your collection. The photos are a tad smaller than I'd hoped and coloring black and white photos has practical limits that I'm sure can be appreciated. But overall I really like the book and recommend it enthusiastically.
