One of America's greatest business enterprises, the Pullman Company provided outstanding service aboard a vast fleet of railroad passenger cars that could be found in almost every nook and cranny of the United States. This illustrated history examines Pullman's diverse fleet, from its spectacular custom-built wooden cars of the nineteenth century to steel heavyweight cars in the prewar years and on into the lightweight streamlined era.
Pullman cars are a tribute to a hard-working generation of men and women who worked to bring the coasts of the United States together efficiently and in style. Author Joe Welsh includes period photos, many in rare color, as well as car diagrams and ads that help trace the development, composition, and evolution of the historically and culturally significant Pullman fleet, including the gamut of sleeper, parlor, and restaurant cars.
Take an interesting look into the time period that relied on train cars, as well as the classic style of the cars themselves. This is a fitting tribute to the former cultural icons aboard which strode giants of American life, such as Babe Ruth and Clark Gable, as well as first-time travelers from small-town America.

Review
The real glory of this handsomely designed book is its rich illustration. Joe Welsh, Bill Howes, and Kevin J. Holland are top-notch photo researchers and archivists, which they prove here with a great selection of 19th century glass-late photos, heavy-weight-era publicity photos, Pullman promotions and car diagrams, and some impressive postwar color action. The authors also have the good sense to go beyond train and car photos. Using photographer Jim Scribbins' candid interior view of the Seaboard Air Line's peerless Sun Lounge across a full spread is brilliant photo editing and typical of the entire book. Anyone interested in passenger railroading - including modelers - will love this book. Trains - November 2010

Great book for learning about Pullman By Gene Bowker "The Cars of Pullman" explores the history of the Pullman Company and it's sleeping cars from the beginning until the end of sleeping car service in the United States. The book highlights the operations of the Pullman company, which by the late 1920's ran a fleet of more than 8,000 cars and carried over 39 million passengers a year. It was literally a "hotel on wheels" that moved every night. The book is divided into logical sections which describe the development of the company between 1867 and the end in 1968. The first section covers the early wood-car era from 1867-1910. Next, the Standard or "Heavyweight" car era from 1910-1932. The next section covers the beginning of lightweight or streamlined equipment from 1932-1943. The last chapter covers the post-war Pullman operations from 1945-1968.The authors of the book Joe Welsh, Bill Howes, and Kevin Holland do a great job of combining pictures from the railroads and the files of the Pullman Company with descriptions of the different types of equipment used over the years. It was amazing to learn about all of the different types of accommodations and even non-sleeping cars that the company managed. The images throughout the book highlight the change from Pullman "Green" heavyweight sleepers to the multi-colored sleepers of the lightweight trains such the Broadway Limited or the 20th Century Limited in the east and the Chiefs and City trains out west. The book discusses the struggles that the company faced after it was forced to divide up its operations group from the Pullman car-building group. After the Second World War, other builders joined the passenger market, and the railroads owned the cars, but Pullman still operated the services on-board.Finally, as the passenger market decreased due to competition from the automobile and airlines the railroads took over their own sleeping car management and in 1968 the Pullman company quit operating. Many Pullman cars survived the founding of Amtrak in 1971 and saw continued service until replaced by newer equipment. While most Pullman cars were scrapped, some did survive and still serve as private cars or are in museum collections throughout the United States.I highly recommend reading "The Cars of Pullman" to increase your knowledge of this fascinating part of American railroading history.

I went with my parents between Philadelphia and Chicago in a Pullman. We traveled in a 14 section. What a great adventure that trip was. As a youngster, I was hooked on riding in a Pullman and still am. Great memories flooded back as I went through this book. Clearly, if you have ever ridden in a Pullman this is the book for you! If you have even the slightest interest in train travel you will find this book a joy.My childhood love of train travel that developed in my youth, has also translated itself into HO model railroading as an adult. As you might guess, I model passenger trains. Besides building cars, I also detail the interiors of the Pullman cars. The typical train book shows exterior shots of an engine with any cars behind the engine fading in the distance. Black and white interior shots of Pullmans are few, if any. A color shot of the interior is never there. The Cars of PULLMAN changes the playing field in that there are ten or so COLOR photographs of Pullman interiors plus a great number of black and white pictures and drawings.Thank you Welsh, Howes and Holland for your great book! This is a book that I waited more than a half century for!
