To be clear, this book is NOT a how-to manual. The author doesn't give you the code to use to make your webpages responsive. That involves CSS3 elements like media queries. Other books and sites cover media queries, but they're very useful for making webpages responsive. The author pointed out that more and more people are accessing websites on mobile devices, so taking a mobile-first approach is not a bad idea, and then use CSS3 media queries to expand the content width, add more features, complexity, etc. One thing that caught my eye was her advice to put more content on one page for SEO purposes. This is where jQuery (or plain JavaScript) can be useful to use toggle to show and hide content using HTML div tags. When I took a course in jQuery one of the assignments was to do exactly that with a tabbed interface. I'm not going to dock any points because I found the content both relevant and informative. Still, I would like to see additional online and book resources for further information on how and where to learn HTML5, CSS3, jQuery, WordPress, SEO, etc. in future editions.

Only 7 chapters cover specific trends: typography, "simple, minimalistic, and responsive design," hover effects, longer pages, images, video, and "consistent, relevant, and frequent content." Some of these are contradictory, such as responsive design and hover effects. Some, such as "consistent, relevant, and frequent content," are not so much trends as timeless common sense. (To the author's credit, she does follow her own advice on her blog.)Unsurprisingly, this book is largely an ad for Ms. Shupe's business. I don't find it a very compelling ad. Her blog is better.
