Educational in an entertaining way By James Dryburgh Having lived through this period and used many of the machines described in, what I would deem to be, my formative years, I was fascinated to delve into the detail of what was going on behind the scenes when I was fiddling with IBM PCs and working on one of the earliest domestic LANs based on the Apple Mac. This is a fascinating, well written book, easy to read and even compelling in its style. Not only do you learn but your are simultaneously entertained, by the twists, turns and many near misses experienced in the era of the clones and compatibles. It has provided a valuable contextual backdrop for the post graduate study on information management which I am suffering this year. Thank you Mr Nicholson you helped to put the fun element into post graduate academia for me.

Well-written history of the PC By Jon I like this book, and it's uniquely excellent considering the quality (or lack thereof) of alternatives available in the Kindle Unlimited selection.The book doesn't spend a lot of time on pre-1970s history of computers, so if you want to read about ancient and Renaissance mechanical calculators you should look elsewhere. But the coverage of the modern PC is excellent and fairly comprehensive, touching on all the major companies and many of the most groundbreaking computer models along the way.The book does leave you wanting to know a lot more about the companies and personalities behind these PCs, but it's understandable that comprehensiveness is sacrificed for broader coverage. If you want a nice, broad history of the PC era, this is it.

By David Ecale A pretty good review of the rise of the Killer Micros and the unseating of the mainframe (and mini) computers that preceded them. For anyone who grew up learning about computers in the '70s & '80s, this will be a wonderful trek down Memory Lane (pun intended). The only bad part of the book is that it could not run through *everything*, and as such, while you will be treated to a great read, you will also be left wondering about some of the more obscure, but seminal, events of the era. (And, yes, I know, a 2000 page book wouldn't sell!)
