But in this case the bad guys push too far. Wrong move. Wrong man. Love this book, “Sheriff's Blood" (Rocky Mountain Lawmen Book 1) by John Legg. And it’s the third book I’ve read by this author. I’m sure gonna read more. Recommended. Five stars.

By gregf1082 Gun Fight In Mescalito and Sheriffs BloodI just finished reading Gun Fight In Mescalito and Sheriffs Blood written by John Legg. First off I want to say that I have been a Louis L'Amour fan for 30 to 40 years. I have read many of his books 3 or 4 times. My problem is I compare any Western I read to the L'Amour books. I feel Louis had his problems with his story telling such as being inconsistent with the facts. I found both of the John Legg books lacking in developing the story line. There were several times that I felt certain events never would have occurred and the characters had no common sense or were dumb. I am rating these two books a 3 only because they held my interest long enough that I finished them and I feel that John has the potential of writing better Western stories.
5 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Not a particularly good read. By Richard James I hate to give a story a poor review because I know the author has put many hours into writing it. I did finish it but am not sure why. Throughout, the author uses violence and cursing more to make the story longer it seems than to further the story line. Some examples of my problems with this story: 1) I never did figure out what "dum", a favorite curse - I think - word, of the hero meant. 2) The writer had the hero spending unlikely amounts of time away from his charge chasing bandits who robbed the mine; in fact, he spent most of his time doing a job that the mine should have been paying Pinkerton's or someone else they hired to do, not a locally elected lawman who ended up traveling many many miles beyond his charge and months it seems from his jurisdiction. 3) The story was full of gratuitous violence for violence' sake which in no way added to the story line. It lessens my liking of the protagonist when he does things like stomping a man's face for no good reason. 4) When one is going to attack outlaws in their camp, one doesn't wait until dawn after they've had a good night's sleep. I should think one would hit them around two or three in the morning when they would still be tired and somewhat confused. 5) I don't like when a writer adds main characters, in this case the hero's brother and his own dog, just to kill them off. 6) It seems odd to me that a U.S. marshal would be accepted as such just on his word. It seem incredible that the sheriff wouldn't complain to someone or do something when the "marshal" is so obvioulsly a crook. The above are just some examples of what I didn't like about this story.I'm afraid I can't recommend this story
