Review It is as well to remember that the "Captains" in this book were seamen whose sole qualifications to hold the title were ready wit, a clear head, and, maybe, that certain indefinable "power of the eye" that is the birth-right of all true leaders.

From the Author For the past few years, while researching for this series of books, the dust bins of history have been co-mingling with the breaking news of pirates, terrorists and killers. The first two volumes of PIRATE TRIALS dealt with a selected few cases of pirates who were caught, tried and sentenced to death for their murderous deeds. Those two volumes were brought to life from handwritten accounts kept among the historical artifacts of the Library of Congress. While they were tedious for some readers, they were authentic and without embellishment. This book is very different and while there are a few selected details of the trials of each of these pirate captains, they are short, brief and quick to execute the swashbuckling killers. These accounts and their very brief trials bring to life the work of one Captain Charles Johnson, who, as the following foreword by C. Lovat Fraser will explain, might be a bit difficult to pin down as to whether he was an actual person or perhaps an assortment of authors. One can be certain that the work was published centuries ago as a trail of published accounts leads to this day. The stories are told of bold and strong-willed men who dared to plunder and kill and justly met their rewards, mostly at the end of a rope. In many cases, their entire crew joined them at the gallows. In some such instances, the Pirate Captains and their crews had their lifeless corpses set upon gibbets and decorated the banks of harbors as a warning to incoming seamen not to follow in their wake. The corpses were left to rot for years, so pervasive was the problem of piracy.

From the Inside Flap This booty was the more considerable, because these people always travel with great magnificence, having all their slaves and attendants always with them, besides jewels and great sums of money to defray the charges. But Avery, not content with this, seized the young Princess, and taking her with him into his own ship, made the best of his way to Madagascar, where she soon broke her heart and died. Also her father, the Great Mogul, did no sooner hear of it but he threatened all Europe with revenge.

Pirates were some of the original bad guys. They scoured the Caribbean and West Indies looking for booty. But they were ruthless murderers. From Captain Avery to Captain Spriggs, to Captains Lowther and Low, even to Captain Teach (aka) Blackbeard, this was a really neat, compact timeline of some of their adventures. Pirates weren't nice people. They still exist to this day but not in the manner in which we visualize and fantasize them to be such as Captain Jack Sparrow. He's the exception. This book talks briefly about the Jolly Roger which is the pirates flag everyone is familiar with. This book mentions just about all the Sea Dogs which we've come to idolize. It makes me want to hear more about them. I'm fairly certain that I'll be speaking pirate lingo for a few days now.Jack Chekijian did a super job narrating this book. His pirate talk was great during the pirate trials. He always speaks clearly and has come to be one of my favorite narrators. This was a gem.

History at it's finest By Devon It is very obvious that the author put a lot of time into researching the pirate trials and truly understands how to write a novel that has deep historical roots. I was a fan because I am so tired of how pirates are portrayed by Hollywood, they are too fancy and obsessed with eyeliner and sex. But, reading Ken's book I am so much more intrigued by the actions (and punishments) of real pirates. What an interesting historical account!

This is the first one I have read and I have fallen hard to the dangerous men of the sea. I am a fan of "Pirates of the Caribbean", but I've always wanted to know about the real pirates and what they did.I honestly think everyone should learn about Pirates and these books are a fantastic way to start. The author transports you back in time. Walk the starboard bow with legendary pirates of history as we experience what they did and whom they conquered.I'm definitely going to read the rest of the series! If you are a fan of pirates, pick up this series!
