While little has been written about the USS Arkansas, this battleship carried the state’s name through two world wars, a Mexican invasion, and into the atomic age. The USS Arkansas, measuring almost the length of two football fields, went to sea in 1911 and sailed the world until 1946 when it served as a target for the atomic bomb tests in the South Pacific. In between, the ship participated in the invasion of Vera Cruz, Mexico; served in World War I; helped Arkansas get an official flag; and assisted in the World War II battles at Normandy, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. Highlighting the narrative with previously unpublished photos, the authors tell the facinating story of the ship and its men by referencing handwritten journals penciled in the midst of service and combat.

The authors combine traditional sources as well as journals written by crew members and interviews with surviving crew members to give a good representation of the ship through more than 3 decades of service. This book is somewhat odd in that all the authors' previous works involve people and places in Arkansas while this ship just happens to share a name with that place. The book is well illustrated, but totally devoid of line drawings, internal representations, camouflage schemes, most technical details, and the detailed changes made during modernizations. While the book looks large and has 210 pages, it also has massive margins and a generous font size. You probably won't spend more than 3 hours reading this book."Arky" is worth reading but at this price probably not worth owning.

S. battleship is told across more than three decades of service in the Mexican invasion, two world wars, and the dawn of the atomic age. The book has dozens of photos, most previously unpublished, that show the daily routines of the sailors who served on the ship. One remarkable photo taken in 1931 off the coast of Panama shows two sailors standing on the bow of the "Arkansas" in between its big, 12-inch guns, which frame the U.S. Navy's huge dirigible "Los Angeles" as it swings in the sea breeze above the mooring ship "Patoka." Also, the authors use diary entries, sometimes written in the heat of battle, by sailors who served on the "Arkansas." This is a thorough and well-documented history of the ship and the men who served on it. It should be of great interest to students of U.S. Naval history.
