After a tragic shooting left him wounded and in disgrace, all that remained of former deputy sheriff Jude Anderson’s life was a shattered femur, the standard disability package, and a host of issues. Jude seeks sanctuary in a remote upstate cabin and tries to get his life back on track. Life has other plans when Jude finds a dead man draped across his front doorstep. The victim is the first hookup Jude’s had in, well, ever. Once Jude processes that shock he gets another when he learns that the homicide detective sent to investigate the murder is Rowan Muir, Jude’s ex. Their split was ugly, and Rowan isn’t the forgiving type. Now Jude is drawn back into a world he left behind: murder investigations and fighting the undeniable attraction he has for Rowan. Rowan is still holding onto a substantial grudge. But both men need to figure out how to cope with being thrown together again, because it’s becoming increasingly clear that Jude is being targeted by a murderer – one who may have come from Jude’s past for revenge.

Review "These MC's were phenomenal together. Even though there's anger in their initial meeting the attraction between them was a spark you could feel from miles away." -- Lovebyte Reviews."I really enjoyed the banter between the two men, and the evolution of their relationship from the first page to the last, but it was the chemistry between the two MCs that was the icing on the cake for me. It was the very best kind of tension, where you're not sure if they're going to throw a punch or rip each other's clothes off." -- Bombshell Books"I also loved the unpredictability of the first half of the book especially when the author tried to pin the case against several suspects - I thought that was really good." - Paddylast, Inc."This book really grabbed me, and I was glad to have the day off so I could devote the time to finish it!  Jude melted my heart, and I was so eager to watch him get the love and acceptance that he deserved." -Watch & Word Society.

From the first page we had a good idea of the main plot, and an intriguing feel for the main character. I like books that get right to the story, and this was exactly that. You could tell that Jude was dealing with a bad situation made worse by his handling of his relationship with Rowan - and soon found out that Rowan made mistakes of his own. The story moves along quickly, the characters are real and interesting and easy to relate to. Having two more books to look forward to is always good. I like that she will be taking Jude and Rowan past the quick and hopeful HEA, to see how their lives go on from there. Excited for Double Down!

Romantic tension so delicious I want seconds By BombshellBooks I have to be honest: there's pretty much nothing I like more than a book about an emotionally wounded man in uniform (or former man in uniform, as the case may be), so this book didn't have to try very hard to win me over.Jude Anderson's had a rough year. When the story starts, Jude's trying to pick up the pieces of his life after a traumatic line-of-duty shooting that resulted in the death of three people, a wrongful death suit that smeared his reputation, and a leg wound that prematurely ended his career (not to mention the post-traumatic stress, the panic attacks, and a messy breakup with the man he loved). He's vulnerable and isolated and trying to claw his way back to level; is it any wonder I was putty in this man's hands from page 1?!But a week after Jude seeks comfort in a new man's arms, he finds the guy's lifeless body on his porch in a pool of blood.Poor Jude! Dude can't catch a break.Enter the smexy Rowan Muir - the ex whose hasty exit in the wake of the shooting shredded Jude's heart. He's also the ex who Jude hasn't quite gotten over yet. Ro's back to investigate the dead man's murder and naturally, sparks start to fly between the two alpha males pretty quickly.I really enjoyed the banter between the two men, and the evolution of their relationship from the first page to the last, but it was the chemistry between the two MCs that was the icing on the cake for me. It was the very best kind of tension, where you're not sure if they're going to throw a punch or rip each other's clothes off. (Ford, in case you're reading this, I always, always vote for ripping each other's clothes off!)The only thing I was missing in terms of Rowan and Jude's romantic relationship was the Big Declaration. I understand why the author didn't include it - and you will too when you read the novella - but I'm a giant sap and I totally wanted it.(An author's note at the end of the book says that this was the first in a series. Yay! I'm already looking forward to Double Down, but crossing my fingers that Ford sticks with the same characters - I'm not ready to let these two smexy men go quite yet. I'm also hoping that my patience will be rewarded with the "I Love Yous" that I was missing in this one.)And although I'm not usually a big fan of mysteries, I thought that this one was pretty well done. There were several plausible suspects and connections to Jude's former life as a deputy, and a handful of red herrings, but the killer's reveal at the end was still enough of a surprise to keep things interesting. Entirely realistic? Not really. But sometimes the entertainment value of something is worth throwing reality out the window. *shrug*Bottom line: A fun, sexy story with two incredibly likable main characters. For what it's worth, Doubleback gets my seal of approval.

The action continues at a pretty fast pace from there. The romance is basically a rekindling of the relationship between Jude and Rowan as Rowan tries to solve the murder and protect Jude. They seem to have primarily broken up due to the inability on both sides to communicate. There are only two intimate scenes in this book between Jude and Rowan. I say "only", but when I reflect on the fact that this is really only a long novella at 132 pages, two scenes would be enough. However, so much else is happening that the story seems longer. The mystery/suspense aspect isn't developed that much. Most of Rowan's investigative activities take place off page and the killer basically outs him/herself. It also seems to seems to come out of the blue. You can suspect who the killer may be by an event that pops up, but the motive and all isn't available to the reader. If this were a full length romantic suspense or plain romance I would have expected more development, but for a 132 page novella I was satisfied with the characters, the detail/world building and the pacing. Looking forward to reading the next installment and the (hopefully) deepening relationship of Jude and Rowan now that they have learned how to communicate better.I received a copy from the author in exchange for my honest review.
