About the Author

Jacob Silverman's work has been published in the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, Slate, the Atlantic, the New Republic, and many other publications. In 2008 the Virginia Quarterly Review recognized him as one of the top literary critics under thirty, and in 2012 he became a three-time Jeopardy! champion. He is on the board of Deep Vellum, a publisher of international literature. He lives in Brooklyn, New York.

If you think that a book about technology and its impact on contemporary society must be viewed through the lens of the folk tales of a Bronze Age nomadic desert tribe, you might not be an objective reviewer.Most books that analyze social trends – Thomas Franks’ “What’s the Matter with Kansas?” comes to mind – are far better at explaining problems, then they are at solutions. Not because their authors are not Christians, but simply because there are no easy answers.Jacob Silverman has done a lot of hefty lifting here and I think his book should be read by everyone who uses any form of social media. Hey, Jacob, that’d be a couple billion people, right? Oh, what royalties you’ll have!Some years ago Leo LaPorte explained that if you are getting a ‘free’ service on the web, you are not that company’s customer, you are their product. Silverman explains in detail how this is so and the implications for all those whose FOMO keeps them connected 24/7. How often does a Buddhist monk check his iPhone?I rarely say this unless the author is Aldous Huxley, George Orwell or A.J. Liebling, but this is an important book and deserves a wide audience. Thank you, Mr. Silverman for being a skeptic about social media. It’s good to remind people that almost all of Google’s profits come from. . .advertising.If someone came to your door with a clipboard and asked you for the information we so willingly give away on Facebook, you’d say, “Get lost, pal!”See the first page of this book for the opinion of Mark Zuckerberg about those who provide him with all that data. It’s not flattering.

Silverman does not break new ground, but he pulls together an enormous amount of information from many sources relating to the use of data mining, surveillance, the social and psychological effects of almost universal use (among younger people, at least - I'm 67 and found Facebook thoroughly repugnant) of "connection" networks. "If you aren't paying for the product, you ARE the product." There is too much in it that I didn't know for me to cover it. It's 370 pages and there is no fluff, it's solid info, with excellent end notes documenting his sources. If you use social media, you need to read this book in order to make some attempt to protect yourself.
