Your car is now a computer on wheels with up to 20 million lines of software code. When a software glitch happens, it can become an out of control missile that could hurtle you to your death. Worse, just about every car on the road today can be hacked –from anywhere in the world. All someone needs is an iPad and a connection to a cellular network. Even though people have died on our roads because of defective software, there are currently no software safety laws. This situation needs more than a reboot. It needs a whole new approach. Why? For one thing, if your car careens out of control because of software errors, it will be you who will have to prove it wasn’t your fault. And how can you do that? "When Cars Decide to Kill" has been written to help you understand what you can do to protect yourself and how we can make car software safer . . . especially now that driverless robot cars are coming soon. Written by an international software test expert in a friendly, conversational tone, "When Cars Decide to Kill" will help you understand what we need to regulate an industry that very much needs regulating.

I am not a computer geek but it is written in language that is accessible for everyone. If you drive a car, or you have children who drive a car, this is a must. We must also petition our politicians for laws that ensure standard testing for all software put into cars. I was absolutely dumbfounded that there are no software safety laws in place. What I want to know is WHY NOT!!

We have all heard about the issues with Toyota brakes and GM ignition switches, but for those of us with different models and makes we tend to ignore them and think that those type of things could never happen to us. This book, written by an expert in technology, really shows how dependent all cars are today on software for their safe operation. These software issues are so complex that NASA could not pinpoint the issues with Toyota's coding issues. The author also touches upon the risk of hackers penetrating automobile technology and the need for the "big guys" to establish a strong culture of quality control. The current legal framework and certification process is woefully inadequate, especially with driverless cars right around the corner. The most important part of the book is Appendix A which highlights protective measures that may well save your life. This is definitely a must read book.
