The iPhone camera is a sophisticated device. It has compelled millions of people worldwide to take a new or renewed interest in photography. Let’s face it: most of us now have a tiny yet highly competent camera in a pocket or purse at all times these days, and we use it to grab shots of people, places, and things more and more often as the technology improvesand you know what? We’re largely pleased with those captures. If you’re a SERIOUS photographer, you may be wondering just how much mileage you can get out of your simple,” ever-ready iPhone camera. Well, the answer may surprise you. In this book, Michael Fagans deconstructs photos taken in 60 scenarioswith a diverse array of subjects, in changing lighting conditions, in places that present unique challengesshowing you how to use solid, traditional photographic techniques to create great shots. Yes, Fagans will teach you the basics of creating a great photo. But there’s far more: He’ll show you that an iPhone, with the aid of apps, can mimic looks achieved by vintage cameras, a range of lenses, and countless filters. In this book, Fagans teaches you how to use free and low-cost apps and Instagram options to create (or, rather, re-create) beloved vintage-photo effects that you’d achieve with the Holga (a plastic vintage camera known for its unexpected lens distortion) and medium-format-camera looks. You’ll learn how to choose and use digital lenses, filters, and effectsand combine and re-combine themto intensify color and contrast, de-saturate color, introduce lens aberrations, play with the grain and color cast in the image, and much, much more. What to emulate the look of vintage film stock to create a photo with an aged, time-worn feel? No problem. Want to introduce a little focusing inaccuracy for effect? Easily done. Want to do these things AND use traditional, professional artificial lighting sources (think a large softbox), a professional image-editing platform (Photoshop), and really refine your message while pulling out all the stops? Fagans shows you how.The deconstruction of the images in this book makes it worth the price of admission. Still, however, there is far more: Fagans is a photographer’s photographer. The book is peppered with inspiring quotes from Ansel Adams, Minor White, and countless other photographic visionaries that speak to the heart of photography.

Reminiscent of The Great Picture Hunt By Jeffery Jones In the mail today came my brand new, first edition copy of The iPhone Photographer: How to take Professional Photographs with Your iPhone. By Michael Fagans. After only a quick glance through the book I have to say it will be a reference for me to revisit on a regular basis. It reminds me of David LaBelle's The Great Picture Hunt and Photosynthesis - A Simple Guide to the Magic of Photography by Bryan Moss. With each chapter being an easily digestible chunk of only a few pages, and a host of great example images this is a simple book to sit and browse through, but be prepared to get sucked into it because it is hard to put down. This book is not a book about which app to use (though Mike is keen on Hipstamatic). It is not about how to move your images from your phone to the current trendy social media app, or how to get your phone camera to give sharper images in low light. The book is not even much about using a phone - iPhone or otherwise - to take photos. Instead the book is about the ideas behind the images. Mike is telling a story with his photos, and he lets us see a bit of the thought process behind the images, how the decisions were made and the considerations of what makes the image successful. By his personal insight and intimate voice he shares some of the other things that go into making photos. There are plenty, perhaps too many, of books out there already explaining focal length and shutter speeds, ISO and digital noise. Scott Kelby has done and redone the books on how to work an image once it is recorded and on your computer screen. This book is more a look at how the image gets into the camera, whether it is a cell phone, a point & shoot, or a DSLR. When I asked Mike what the focus of the book was recently, he said it was trying to get at the piece of photographic equipment that is between the ears. And that is exactly what he has done.Well done, Mike. The rest of you, find a copy of the book from Amazon and sit back to enjoy it.

What a powerful set of photographs and tips –– slices of life –– poignant and compelling documents, a true inspiration. A visionary artist, whatever the capture device, he sees and in turn he helps us see. Michael is more a poet than a photographer. He is pursuing moment, light and subtle insight, not just the facts. There is grace and sensitivity to the images, some are still with me.

A book that teaches so much more than technical photo skills By John Harte The iPhone is a photography game changer, placing a high caliber photography instrument instantly and continuously in the pockets and purses of millions of people. But like every photography innovation before it and every one that will follow, photography is a human process that utilizes technology to deliver images. It is the soul, the heart, the brain and the photographer's vision that makes truly great photos. Michael Fagans understands this, and in this wonderful book he not only shares his technical knowledge of the strengths and limitations of the iPhone, he takes us on a wonderful journey through the process of making meaningful photographs. "The iPhone Photographer: How to Shoot Professional Photographs with Your iPhone" is really three books in one, all borne of Fagans' technical skills learned at the prestigious Rochester Institute of Photography, his career as one of America's best newspaper photographers and his personal experiences traveling the world on humanitarian missions. This book covers the technical aspects of operating the iPhone, the fun aspects of using and applying various Hipstamatic filters for the right look to your photos, and perhaps most importantly - and certainly with poignancy and passion - how to make meaningful photographs with the camera. I thought I was going to read a technical book, and found this to be so much more. Fagans' lessons on how he works with his photography subjects are invaluable; touching, enlightening and heartwarming. His story about how he shot a holiday portrait of two women at a shelter really stole my heart. You will learn so much from this book - the technical, the fun and what photography is truly about - how to use your iPhone to make meaningful photos and tell stories that are produced with the technology contained in your iPhone, but which come from the soul. A fantastic read!
