By Mike O'Connor Upon seeing Steve Pace's MUSTANG, THOROUGHBRED STALLION OF THE AIR, aviation buffs might think 'Not another P-51 book!?!' However, upon examination, they should find that Pace's book, a 2012 Fonthill Media release, is certainly one of the best technical histories of North American Aviation's classic fighter published. After opening chapters that provide a historic overview of NAA, initial Mustang development and the aircraft's record in World War II, Pace examines the a/c's development in chapters entitled 'The A-36 Variants,' 'The F-6 and RF-51 Tactical Reconnaissance Mustangs,' 'Mustang Variants of the RAF and RAAF,' 'The Lightweight Mustang Programme,' 'The Twin Mustang,' 'Two-Seat and Purpose-Built Mustangs,' etc. Though rather dry in nature, these chapters furnish a comprehensive, authoritative and nicely-illustrated guide to the Mustang's evolution. Pace does include some combat reports, documents and other material that enlivens the text.As mentioned, the book gets a big thumbs-up for illustrative material. It contains hundreds of b&w and color photographs, diagrams and illustrations that showcase the P-51 in all its variants and paint schemes.Mustang buffs or anyone with an interest in classic piston-engined fighters will enjoy Pace's book. Recommended.

Boyne Even a veteran Mustang expert will be delighted with the contents of this book which presents, in a fresh, authoritative manner, virtually everything one could wish to know on the history of the aircraft. Steve Pace's fine new book provides the reader with much new information and great photos about the iconic aircraft. It is not easy to make an exhaustive study easy to read, but Pace has done so by dividing the book into sixteen distinct parts. He begins with the convoluted origins of the aircraft and carries through to its current status as a highly prized personal plane, record setting racer, and museum staple. More than 200 photos and diagrams add life to the book. The author is equally comprehensive about the details of the lives of the men who designed and flew it, There are sixty-four terrific photos are in color which cover every aspect of the aircraft's stellar career. The true devotee or the modeler will enjoy Part 14, which describes the structure and the systems of the Mustang in detail. It makes very real the enormous amount of design and planning that was so swiftly created for this classic airplane. The appendices tell you the factory serial numbers and the subsequent serial numbers of each aircraft as it migrated through the USAAF to foreign air forces and into private hands. A good bibliography and glossary are valuable additions.

By Chuck Dinges Msgt I have yet to read the entire book so can't comment on it's total accuracy but it "appears" to be very well written and I like the wide assortment of photos (even though some have appeared elseware) that include a good number of color photos. I especially like that it covers well the very early, to include the A-36, models as well as the very late, like the P-51H and P-82 Twin Mustang, models. In some books one would think that only the P-51D did anything in history. This book could probably use a few more photos of the P-51B and C models - but that is just "my" opinion. I base it on the fact that it was the "B" and "C" models that blunted the Luftwaffe, a Luftwaffe that was fairly "beat up" by the time the "D" models showed up.
