Contemporary discussion surrounding the role of the internet in society is dominated by words like: internet freedom, surveillance, cybersecurity, Edward Snowden and, most prolifically, cyber war. Behind the rhetoric of cyber war is an on-going state-centered battle for control of information resources. Shawn Powers and Michael Jablonski conceptualize this real cyber war as the utilization of digital networks for geopolitical purposes, including covert attacks against another state's electronic systems, but also, and more importantly, the variety of ways the internet is used to further a state’s economic and military agendas. Moving beyond debates on the democratic value of new and emerging information technologies, The Real Cyber War focuses on political, economic, and geopolitical factors driving internet freedom policies, in particular the U.S. State Department's emerging doctrine in support of a universal freedom to connect. They argue that efforts to create a universal internet built upon Western legal, political, and social preferences is driven by economic and geopolitical motivations rather than the humanitarian and democratic ideals that typically accompany related policy discourse. In fact, the freedom-to-connect movement is intertwined with broader efforts to structure global society in ways that favor American and Western cultures, economies, and governments. Thought-provoking and far-seeing, The Real Cyber War reveals how internet policies and governance have emerged as critical sites of geopolitical contestation, with results certain to shape statecraft, diplomacy, and conflict in the twenty-first century.

The Real Cyber War: The Political Economy of Internet Freedom (The History of Communication), by Shawn M. Powers, Michael Jablonski

Review "Shawn M. Powers and Michael Jablonski’s seminal new book The Real Cyber War. . . . will help to inspire a change in course that will restore the internet to what it might become (and what many thought it was supposed to be): an engine for democracy and social and economic progress, justice, and equity.”--Boundary 2 "A knowing, wide-ranging, perceptive, important, and original book. Powers and Jablonski connect disparate and significant dots; weave history, technology, and law together; and explain interrelated complex concepts imaginatively. They tell a compelling story key for any student of transnational information flows." --Monroe Price, author of Media and Sovereignty: The Global Information Revolution and its Challenge to State Power“Powers and Jablonski execute the close knitting that is the hallmark of careful political economy work — The Real Cyber War documents the interests at play in contemporary international communication and issues a clarion call to think otherwise about how the Internet might serve global interests rather than parochial ones.”--Journal of Communication "In their excellent book, The Real Cyberwar: The Political Economy of Internet Freedom, Shawn Powers and Michael Jablonski describe Google’s unprecedented dominance of the contemporary data economy. Drawing attention to the irregular regulation of the global data trade, when compared to all other commodities, they note the power of the internet-freedom agenda to legitimize a particular set of economic practices.”--The Guardian  "The Real Cyber War serves as an excellent analysis of where we are now and sets the agenda for the coming years."--Information, Communication & Society "Powers and Jablonski take a unique approach to the concept of cyber war, focusing on the very architecture of the internet itself. Recommended."--Choice

About the Author Shawn Powers is an Assistant Professor of Communication at Georgia State University. Michael Jablonski is an attorney and presidential fellow in communication at Georgia State University.

Dissecting "Freedom to Connect" By Richard Hill This review was originally published in boundary 2, at: http://boundary2.org/2015/04/29/dissecting-the-internet-freedom-agenda/Disclosure: the author of this review is thanked in the Preface of the reviewed book. Both radical civil society organizations and mainstream defenders of the status quo agree that the free and open Internet is threatened. The threats include government censorship and mass surveillance, but also the failure of governments to control rampant industry concentration and commercial exploitation of personal data, which increasingly takes the form of providing “free” services in exchange for personal information that is resold at a profit, or used to provide targeted advertising, also at a profit. In Digital Disconnect, Robert McChesney has explained how the Internet, which was supposed to be a force for the improvement of human rights and living conditions, has been used to erode privacy and to increase the concentration of economic power, to the point where it is becoming a threat to democracy. In Digital Depression, Dan Schiller has documented how US policies regarding the Internet have favored its geo-economic and geo-political goals, in particular the interests of its large private companies that dominate the information and communications technology (ICT) sector worldwide.Shawn M. Powers and Michael Jablonski’s seminal book The Real Cyber War takes us further down the road of understanding what went wrong, and what might be done to correct the situation. Their objective is to help us understand (citing from p. 19 of the paperback edition) “why states pursue the policies they do”. The book “focuses centrally on understanding the numerous ways in which power and control are exerted in cyberspace” (p. 19).Starting from the rather obvious premise that states compete to shape international policies that favor their interests, and using the framework of political economy, the authors outline the geopolitical stakes and show how questions of power, and not human rights, are the real drivers of much of the debate about Internet governance. They show how the United States has deliberately used a human rights discourse to promote policies that further its geo-economic and geo-political interests. And how it has used subsidies and government contracts to help its private companies to acquire or maintain dominant positions in much of the ICT sector.Powers and Jablonski dissect the mechanisms by which vibrant government institutions deliberately transferred power to US corporations in order to further US geo-economical and geo-political goals. In particular, they show how a “freedom to connect” narrative is used by the USA to attempt to transform information and personal data into commercial commodities that should be subject to free trade. Yet all states (including the US) regulate, at least to some extent, the flow of information within and across their borders. If information is the “new oil” of our times, then it is not surprising that states wish to shape the production and flow of information in ways that favor their interests. Thus it is not surprising that states such as China, India, and Russia have started to assert sovereign rights to control some aspect of the production and flow of information within their borders, and that European Union courts have made decisions on the basis of European law that affect global information flows and access. As the authors put the matter (p. 6): “the [US] doctrine of internet freedom … is the realization of a broader [US] strategy promoting a particular conception of networked communication that depends on American companies …, supports Western norms …, and promotes Western products.” (I would personally say that it actually supports US norms and US products and services.) As the authors point out, one can ask (p. 11): “If states have a right to control the types of people allowed into their territory (immigration), and how its money is exchanged with foreign banks, then why don’t they have a right to control information flows from foreign actors?”The authors explain how the US military-industrial complex has morphed into an information-industrial complex, with deleterious consequences for both industry and government, consequences such as “weakened oversight, accountability, and industry vitality and competiveness”(p. 23) that create risks for society and democracy. As the authors say, the shift “from adversarial to cooperative and laissez-faire rule making is a keystone moment in the rise of the information-industrial complex” (p. 61).As a specific example, they focus on Google, showing how it (largely successfully) aims to control and dominate all aspects of the data market, from production, through extraction, refinement, infrastructure and demand. A chapter is devoted to the economics of internet connectivity, showing how US internet policy is basically about getting the largest number of people online, so that US companies can extract ever greater profits from the resulting data flows. They show how the network effects, economies of scale, and externalities that are fundamental features of the internet favor first-movers, which are mostly US companies. The remedy to such situations is well known: government intervention: widely accepted regarding air transport, road transport, pharmaceuticals, etc., and yet unthinkable for many regarding the internet. But why? As the authors put the matter (p. 24): “While heavy-handed government controls over the internet should be resisted, so should a system whereby internet connectivity requires the systematic transfer of wealth from the developing world to the developed.” But freedom of information is put forward to justify specific economic practices which would not be easy to justify otherwise, for example “no government taxes companies for data extraction or for data imports/exports, both of which are heavily regulated aspects of markets exchanging other valuable commodities”(p. 97).Thus the authors posit that there are tensions between the US call for “internet freedom” and other states’ calls for “information sovereignty”, and analyze the 2012 World Conference on International Telecommunications from that point of view. Not surprisingly, the authors conclude that international cooperation, recognizing the legitimate aspirations of all the world’s peoples, is the only proper way forward. As the authors put the matter (p. 206): “Activists and defenders of the original vision of the Web as a ‘fair and humane’ cyber-civilization need to avoid lofty ‘internet freedom’ declarations and instead champion specific reforms required to protect the values and practices they hold dear.” And it is with that in mind, as a counterweight to US and US-based corporate power, that a group of civil society organizations have launched the Internet Social Forum.Anybody who is seriously interested in the evolution of internet governance and its impact on society and democracy will enjoy reading this well researched book and its clear exposition of key facts. One can fondly hope that this book will help to inspire a change in course that will restore the internet to what it might become (and what many thought it was supposed to be): an engine for democracy and social and economic progress, justice, and equity.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. the depth and breadth of information collation can be amazing. If you don’t believe this (and you belong ... By Autamme_dot_com It is fair to suggest that there are two types of “cyber war” affecting our ever-connected society. The first is the most commonly known, whether it is hackers and virus makers, Internet freedoms and identity theft or security issues. The less known form is the actions of nation states, who are seeking to restrict and control access domestically whilst aggressively seeking to ready itself for possible economic and military action by cyber means against future foes. It is the latter that the authors are focussing on in this fairly academic work.On one hand many governments are advocating Internet freedoms and greater connectedness in other countries, yet what are their real motives? Are democracy and humanitarian considerations being overridden by economic, geopolitical and military considerations? It might be easier to say one thing whilst doing something entirely different…U.S. foreign policy is considered along with the information-industrial complex and examination is made about the information-gathering powers of companies such as Google and how our freedom, or perception thereof, is actualised in a surveillance society where recording everything and anything is cheap and joining the dots to build a detailed dossier on a subject is an increasingly trivial task. Whether the information is being gathered by a government against a dissident or by a large corporation about a store customer, the depth and breadth of information collation can be amazing. If you don’t believe this (and you belong to the vast majority of people who have not enabled a blocking option) request your search history from Google or your search engine of choice. Each and every line of every search spread over time can reveal a shocking insight into your behaviour. This is just one data point. Government bodies don’t necessary have a check box where you can elect for “no data collection” as well. Naturally the user has to trust the big company if it says that by checking this box, we won’t store any data about you. No doubt lawyers could pore over a privacy policy and keep themselves in work for many years.Certainly this was an interesting, thought-provoking read although it is not something you would describe as being a lightweight work. It would have been nice if the book could have been a little more accessible for the average, non-academic reader as it covers a serious subject that deserves a wider audience. For the academic, as you would expect, the book features a very comprehensive index and extensive reference sources. It was an interesting, challenging read that is likely to stand the test of time and become a classic work.

The goal of Software People is to give an insider's view of what being a software person is all about to "foreigners" -- non-programmers. It is non-technical, but explains things that are different about people who become programmers. I attempt to cover material in the book that I haven't seen elsewhere. Here are some of the topics: A description for outsiders of all the stuff you've got to know in order to be a programmer -- learning a language is just a tiny bit of it! A statement of the programmer's dilemma -- how all-consuming mastering even a slice of software usually is, and the difficult trade-off's you're then faced with involving the other skills you need to succeed in an organization and in life. A discussion of how there are levels and levels of software skill -- it isn't like learning to drive a car. Similarly with productivity. A extensive discussion of the cultural divisions and wars that blaze through the software community, with mutually incompatible "religions" living in separate colonies, looking with disdain and pity at those who follow false gods. How people who are excellent at software, far from being honored, are often diminished and marginalized. Lots of material about hiring. Who decides, on what basis, common mistakes. A discussion of the deep-seated cynicism that infects a large number of programmers. Technology organizations, managers and decision making. Typical patterns I've seen in software people. An extensive discussion, with examples, of the flaws that are characteristic of high-IQ programmers. Finally, a discussion of the role of the CEO in a company where software plays a key role.

Grunt Cookbook covers some of the most popular plugins available and provides the essential foundation needed to explore all the capabilities/tasks that can be accomplished using Grunt.Until I came upon Grunt, I'd created Perl scripts and Chef recipes to automate the management of all the database monitoring and web sites I had deployed. The task of deploying new sites and managing the existing sites had become overwhelming. I needed a tool that could automate the deployment and management of the existing sites but also flexible to changes in requirements since not all sites are the same. I had the misguided belief that I could use a Perl/Chef-solo/Git combination to manage the various monitoring/web sites I had deployed. After exploring Grunt using Grunt Cookbook, I was able to automate tasks that I couldn't do just using the Perl/Git/Chef-solo combination. The problem I have with the other Grunt books available is that they focus exclusively on web site creation and management. Grunt Cookbook opened my eyes to the limitless capabilities that Grunt provides. Using Grunt, the grunt-ssh, grunt-shell plugins and Git, I am able to automate monitoring and site updates from a centralized location. I found the "File Management" and "Creating Custom Tasks" chapters the most invaluable to my endeavors.I recommend also visiting the websites of the various plugins mentioned in this cookbook.

By Packer Family Grunt is an excellent build automation tool for web development and this book is a great resource for using it. There were numerous ready to use recipes which helped me better understand and leverage its automation to consistently build and deploy our JavaScript code base in our environment.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Good Collection of Techniques to use with Grunt By David Nunez Grunt is an outstanding build automation tool for web development and this book is now one of the best resources for learning and mastering it. The recipes cover a range of topics from script and stylesheet minification, triggering unit tests, processing files, prepping and publishing a project, and even building your own custom Grunt plugins. Some of those topics are covered in more depth than others, but each gets at least a fair amount of attention or provides useful additional resources to pursue the topics further.I was already familiar with several basic processes introduced early in the book (stylesheet and script conversion, minification, concatenation, etc.) but many of the middle to later techniques introduced in the book were brand new to me. The author's use of symlink, curling, processing functions, and task functions were all concepts I'd never realized were available in Grunt and helped me broaden my expectations for the tool as a whole. Even some of the recipes that didn't cover their topic in-depth were still enough to get me interested and learn more about it on my own.Although the material covered in this book is useful, I believe there were certain topics that could have been covered or more thoroughly covered. First, Grunt is one of multiple JavaScript build automation tools - Gulp being the most widely recognized - and there was no mention of the advantages of using Grunt over the other tools or how it answers the challenges raised by its competitors. I'm not saying the author needs to be an evangelist for Grunt, but the debate is very real and the fact that it was never addressed was a shortcoming. An unnecessary criticism against Grunt is that you merely configure your tasks JSON-style and never have the freedom to write freely in JavaScript for more complicated tasks (the way Gulp allows), however this author successfully demonstrated the usage of task functions and the additional power you have to access config params, task params, and files in true JavaScript fashion. It would have been the true icing on the cake to see Grunt configured to use the file-stream engine driving Gulp (which has been exposed now as a separate npm module) so users could see they have the ability to work easily with streams for those tasks where they don't wish to create temporary files and clean them up afterwards.Second, I doubt there will be any readers who find more than half of the recipes useful (possibly closer to a third) because much of the middle of the book contains recipes for "either or" tools. For example, there are several recipes for Jade OR Handlebars, for LESS, SASS, OR Stylus, and this pattern continues for several chapters throughout the middle of the book. It would be like having a cookbook that lists a simple recipe for a peanut butter and grape jelly sandwich, followed by one for peanut butter and marmalade, and yet another for chunky peanut butter and grape jelly, and a final one for chunky peanut butter and marmalade. In my opinion, it made for a somewhat tiring pace throughout the middle of the book.Additionally, the recipes in the first 3/4 of the book were not terribly creative and each was often prefaced by a short sentence or two that didn't sell its use case very well. There were numerous introductions to the tune of "sometimes you may have need to do [blank], so you would use this tool". I think it important that an author often attempt to sell the reader on the need for a technique by giving a real world example of problem it helps solve. There was very, very little of that prefacing these recipes. Also, until the last two chapters there were very few recipes that showed real world complexity, and while you can argue that the author was ramping up the level of complexity throughout the book, more imaginative examples would have been better. We expect API documentation and READMEs to be extremely plain and to fail at demonstrating a wide ranges of uses, but not a cookbook. Several times I either failed to get the point of certain tools in a given recipe or failed to see some of the best uses for them (such as symlink) due to overly brief recipe introductions and/or overly simple examples. It's not enough to cover a variety of tools if the examples barely add more explanation or examples that can be found right on the landing page for the tool's page on npm.I know it sounds like a lot of criticism, but the book was overall a great read and I've marked many pages as ones to remember for the future. The quality of recipes was a bit uneven, but that doesn't take away from the fact that there were great recipes in here and this is still one of the best resources out there for looking at Grunt in-depth.

The oxen and wagons moving family goods and others to Canada and then to St. Joe, Missouri, to be with the second wagon train going west to the Oregon territory. My grandfathers, my father, and myself in our life long involvement in moving all types of freight in America. The dedication of all this and incidents along the way.

The real story of what it takes to risk it all and go for broke.

Conventional wisdom says most startups need to be in Silicon Valley, started by young engineers around a sexy new idea and backed by VC funding. But as Mikkel Svane reveals in Startupland, the story of founding Zendesk was anything but conventional. Founded in a Copenhagen loft by three 30-something friends looking to break free from corporate doldrums, Zendesk Inc. is now one of the hottest enterprise software companies, still rapidly growing with customers in 150 countries. But its success was anything but predestined.

With revealing stories both funny and frank, Mikkel shares how he and his friends bravely left secure jobs to start something on their own, how he almost went broke several times, how they picked up themselves and their families to travel across the world to California and the unknown, and how the three friends were miraculously still together for Zendesk's IPO and (still growing) success. Much like Zendesk's mission itself - to remove friction, barriers, and mystery in order to make customer service easier and more approachable - Startupland removes some of the myths about startups and startup founders. Mikkel's advice, hard won through experience, often bucks conventional wisdom and entrepreneurial tropes. He shares why failure (whether fast or slow) is awful, why a seemingly boring product or idea can be the most exciting, and why giving back to the community is as important as the bottom line.

From how to hire right (look for people who are not offended by swearing) to which personas generate the highest response rates, Mikkel answers the most pressing questions from the perspective of someone still in the trenches and willing to share the hard truth, warts and all.

By Janz, Christoph The book is a well-written and very personal look back at Zendesk’s amazing success story, which began in a loft in Copenhagen and culminated in the company’s Wall Street IPO earlier this year. It’s both autobiography and “tips & tricks" guide: First and foremost it’s a suspenseful chronicle of the journey of Mikkel and his co-founders Alex and Morten that lets you witness some of the many ups and downs which startupland has in store for entrepreneurs, but it also contains a lot of actionable advice for other founders. It’s an entertaining read, too, and as someone who was fortunate enough to have played a small role in Zendesk’s beginnings, reading about those early days put a smile on my face many times. In some cases, it also made me laugh out loud, e.g. when Mikkel writes about my conversation with Michael Arrington. One of the reasons why "Startupland" is such a great read is that it’s honest and humble. When other authors write things like “I didn’t know anything about XYZ” it often feels like fishing for compliments. When Mikkel writes it, you know that he really means it that way. I highly recommend the book to any startup founder, and in particular to all founders from Europe who consider making the move to the US.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A modern fairytale By Joachim Majholm Highly recommendable for anyone who aspire to become an entrepreneur - or for anyone who likes a good old fashioned fairytale about how three guys had a great idea, worked their arses off and spend all their money on creating this great product and - against all odds - turned it into a 2 billion dollar company (and rising). Told with great passion and honesty.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A real entrepreneur's journey By Goh Boon Jin Mikkel, the founder of Zendesk shares in great detail his experience from working in a loft to building a billion-dollar unicorn company.Startupland is a must read for entrepreneurs seeking to hear the real candid stories on the struggles especially in the early stages from a real entrepreneur.

If you write or publish Kindle books, then you know a good cover is key to getting your book noticed. You may have tried the KDP cover creator, but found out that it only does marginally well at creating a nice looking cover. It's not bad, but it is free. If you have someone else create your cover, you can buy them for as cheap as five bucks and they won't be awful, but you do get what you pay for. Pre-made covers are available for $40 on up, but usually after you get it you can't customize it anymore and have to pay more - again - to make any changes. And if you want a truly custom cover, then be prepared to spend a few hundred dollars! So what do you do? Well, why not create your own cover. If you have no graphic design skills or think that only experienced Photoshop owners can create great covers - think again! In Kindle Cover Wizard, I walk you through creating a cover from scratch with completely free tools. The software, images, and fonts are all 100% free to use commercially - you just have to know where to find them. (Hint - I tell you!) As a bonus, I also point you to a video series I created that walks you though by hand how I did everything in the book. Watch over my shoulder as I create a very cool cover from scratch. And like I said, it's free to you for buying my book. So after spending a few bucks on this book, put your wallet away! The rest is completely free. Really. If you don't believe me, take a look at the cover of this book. It was created with the same tools and software that I mention in the book. And I created it all myself in under an hour. The best part is that I can change it anytime I want - and don't have to pay someone else to do that. So grab a copy and start creating!

As humans charge up the steep slope of technological innovation, Digital Age media increasingly shapes our perception of everything--even spiritual matters. The next stage of spiritual development may be the product of a digital interface between our own image of the divine, virtual reality technology that produces real perceptions, and with devices that stimulate areas of the brain associated with spiritual experience. This book explores the influence of digital media on spirituality and the impact of the digital environment on our experience of the spiritual world. The author predicts a future in which digital technology and neuroscience will combine to create a new understanding of the divine.

In previous reviews, I've said that book one was just OK but mainly repeatatilve & silly and part two was terrible and a waste of her writing and my reading BUT part three was good. It started off with the same unbelievable silliness that book one and two had but just when I was about to say to myself "If you don't stop reading this book, I'm going to protect you from yourself and throw your Kindle out the window" the book got good. Hard to believe but it did. It was if someone hit Ms. Blue over the head and she wrote a better book or they started typing for her, because the book got interesting. Yes Russell still whined like a bitch but Kennedy became a man (almost) and she introduced a couple of characters that actually had a brain and a storyline. A couple of characters from previous books developed a little. I hope she doesn't disappoint with book four because I'll actually read it when it's released.

I just can't get with this whole Levi character and him being 50 is turning me all the way off. I would have rather her got with a new man I'm not feeling this story anymore at all. How she gone just get married to a man old enough to be her daddy. Leave all the drama at home and not say nothing and then her sister acting like a psycho out of no where? I'm confused and irritated by this book.

Not what I expected By DIE.ANN The story was ok....I expected something totally different from what actually went on...I initially thought Dominic would be the mistress and not Carmen...(may have made a better story)....tons of errors on names but wasn't confusing...I did skip through a lot just to see how the story would play out...Not sure how pt 2 is going to play out since the mistress is dead...but I'll wait and see

By Amazon Customer I had a hard time keeping the story straight because of all the errors but then again the author had a hard time keeping the story straight. This was poor editing and had it been carefully edited then this could have been a great book. I will not be reading part 2.

This volume contains Bernard Shaw’s 1924 play, "Saint Joan". It is a ‘chronicle play’ in six scenes, and an epilogue that revolves around Joan of Arc. It elucidates her immense personality, problems, and potential. As well as the play itself, Shaw also furnishes a number of chapters on Joan of Arc that offer interesting insights into her life and character. This interesting and thought-provoking play will appeal to fans and collectors of Shaw’s seminal work, and would make for a great addition to any collection. The chapters of this book include: “Joan the Original and Presumptuous”, “Joan and Socrates”, “Contrast with Napoleon”, “Was Joan Innocent or Guilty”, “Joan’s Good Looks”, “Joan’s Social Position”, “Joan’s Voices and Visions”, “The Evolutionary Appetite”, etcetera. Many vintage texts such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive, and it is with this in mind that we are republishing this book now, in an affordable, high-quality, modern edition. It comes complete with a specially commissioned biography of the author.

(Book 1) (Unofficial Minecraft Fiction) by Jake NicholasKindle Edition Free download, List price $2.99Publication Date: March 22, 2015Another diary, poorly written, but at least it’s longer. Now I can suffer through more pages of very badly pseudo story masked as a diary.Personal opinion, this might have been scrounged from the trash can in some 6th grade English as a Second language class. Entry 3 “It seems I look so much sad that my mum…” If you want to use this as a way to learn how to write or the English language at least price it appropriately. $3 price tags are for people who already know how to write. Well written short stories are priced at a dollar, why should we pay 3 for garbage?1 star because you tried
