The Burlington, Cedar Rapids & Northern Railway was an important part of the commercial life of the upper Midwest during the age of railways. Don L. Hofsommer uses the BC&N as the vehicle for his investigation of the birth, evolution, and disappearance of an important regional carrier, offering an inside look at the struggles of a small railway to stay relevant while railroad empires were being built. More than a bit player, the BC&N might have become even more important had plans gone forward to utilize its rails in a campaign to reach the Pacific. The struggle of the Cedar Rapids road and its corporate ancestors to place Minneapolis–St. Paul and St. Louis in competition with Chicago via a north/south route forms a major part of the book’s narrative, and the book also offers a history of the company's three-state service territory (Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota) from the dawn of the age of railways into the 20th century. The book includes more than 200 photographs selected from Hofsommer’s extensive library of historic photographs documenting the history of the BC&N Railway.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. it was with great anticipation that I opened this volume and began to ... By James P. OHare Having worked the "South End" (Cedar Rapids-Burlington) of the old BCR&N, by way of the Rock Island, I was elated that not only was a book dedicated to the railroad, but Don Hofsommer authored it! I have and have read... all of Mr. Hofsommer's work and find him firmly grounded in his knowledge of railroading in the Midwest. As one can imagine, it was with great anticipation that I opened this volume and began to consume the story. Once again, the research is first rate and the style is very engaging. Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in a,once, great enterprise. Alright, so why four stars instead of five? Fair question, indeed. Hofsommer has written extensively about the Minneapolis and Saint Louis Railway and it is quite evident that there is more than simply a passing lean toward the Louie. Not a thing wrong with that, mind you. Nor is there doubt that the Louie, BCR&N and, eventually, the Rock Island were intimately meshed. On a few occasions, however, it seemed as if the M&St.L trumped the star of the show. Burlington received more than adequate coverage, Cedar Rapids no so much, but the ninety nine miles in between were only lightly described. Am I biased? Of course. The ""North End" was highlighted with gusto and, with the terrific job Dan Sabin has done with the Iowa Northern, perhaps it's to be expected. I just missed the part about "Bootleggers Curve." Once again, this book is a must for persons still intrigued by...and who can still remember...the system that followed the Burlington, Cedar Rapids and Northern.
