12 of 13 people found the following review helpful. ... one of the few WWI aviation books that is beautiful enough to be called a coffee table book By Steve Suddaby "French Aviation during the First World War" is one of the few WWI aviation books that is beautiful enough to be called a coffee table book. The hundreds of photos and color artwork alone are easily worth the price. There are already some excellent works on some aspects of French WWI aviation like Davilla & Soltan’s French Aircraft of the First World War and Bailey & Cony’s The French Air Service War Chronology. This is the only book in English, however, that covers the entire topic of French aviation on the Western Front. Many of the photos are period postcards and other images from private collections; this reviewer had seen very few of these before. With all of the artwork here, from pages of aircraft side-views to period cartoons and sketches, it is a very colorful book and a joy to simply browse. Vital Ferry includes dozens of text boxes with titles like “Why the Name Bébé?” and “A Latvian at the Front”. The chapters cover topics as varied as overviews of each year of the war, the major planes produced by French manufacturers, French aces, some interesting unknown fliers, daily life in training and frontline escadrilles, and an assessment of WWI aviation.This book is not without flaws, but these are relatively minor. There are a few glaring factual errors, particularly related to non-French aviation. (The mention in 1917 and early spring 1918 of German Fokker D.VII aircraft, for example, is probably a transcription error.) The translation at times is odd, as if the translator was not familiar with English WWI aviation terms (“wing-twisting” instead of “wing-warping”). Sometimes the author gets so far down into the weeds in describing individual missions that the reader wonders whether there is a point to the discussion. For an American audience unfamiliar with the locations of smaller French cities and towns, more maps would have been very helpful. Paradoxically, so many wonderful text boxes, photos, and double-page spreads about aircraft can make it hard to follow the text of the chapter.
