On every page, in fact, every paragraph, I was saying "I didn't know THAT!" And I grew up in the heart of the Minnesota Corn Belt -- but there was so much more to know, and it's in this book. You will like this book especially if: 1) you are a foodie, 2) you like history, 3) you are a chemist (like me) and like to see good science mixed with good writing, 4) if you appreciate good research, 5) you like a food made from corn (pop corn is well treated here!), 6) you think you know all there is to know about: the Mid West, Chicago, the railroads, Abraham Lincoln, hybrid corn, GMO, planting, farming, --- you get the idea.Well researched and heavily documented, you'll put this book on your shelf for re-reading. Corn and Culture: Our American Story By bookLover So commonplace is corn, especially to Americans, that the importance of corn to our shared history, is easily overlooked. In large measure, corn is woven into the very fabric of Americans as a people. It has connected us, advanced us, changed us. Decisions about corn...what we cooked, what we planted, how we harvested, how produce was sent to market, and the markets and uses of the crop, are just a few ways that ubiquitous corn is the story of Americans.
