15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. A decent starting place By Bazbar This is a decent place for a novice to start with interpretation of soil test results. The first half of the book is spent on a pretty basic overview of the function of nutrients and general ideas for balancing them in different soil types. The entire 2nd half of the book is sample test results and an accompanying analysis (ie: practical examples).I have a few problems with the text. Personally I'm not a fan of reprinting material verbatim that is available for free online - it just always feels lazy to me. Woven into the 1st half of the text are brief essays that were previously published in the Logan Labs soil newsletter. I also found it very annoying that the sample soil test results often appear many pages after they are initially discussed. I'd rather see the results up front and have the analysis follow so that I can bookmark the result and move back and forth - rather than trying to skim ahead and find it. I also wish the 2nd half of the book had been distilled into a more abstract ruleset. The practical examples are nice (and will be particularly helpful for some people) but I would rather have an entire book devoted to that (some kind of workbook or companion) and have a more compact and incisive work just on the logic/rules/approach to interpretation.It's not bad and it does live up to its description: it's practical and it does offer good advice. I would say that if you're spending money on a soil test and getting back very basic analysis or none at all - then this will be money well spent. But the book could be much better than it is. More detailed, denser, concise, smaller print, etc.

Stimulating read By Looking Glass I enjoyed the book from the personal stories and insights that we are charting new territory in the world of the cloud and Artificial Intelligence.The comments on creative intelligence with reference to Mozart, Einstein and Da Vinci to illustrate a few as comparison of the age of Google and start of this creative Internet and web age along with the mind of someone, such as Steve Jobs who created the entry of a personal computer, is a great composition on which to view this small part of time in the world is thought provoking. The creative intelligence has created the majority of the world's advancement for this planet in this small period of time.The book is filled with creative minds and their beginnings to great discovery, art and computers to lead us now into an age of computer clouds and AI.

I liked the overview of Einstein and Da Vince's approaches to inventing process and that's it. But you can find better description in other books. As for the rest of the book, there is too much "Google" word and little use of it. "Google Age", "Age of Google"... Then six step approach is given, but it sounds like six steps how to search info using google. Ideas are basic, text is not focused, because of lack useful ideas obviously.Don't like writing reviews, but decided to write one out of disappointment with this book.

Raydelto Hernandez is a software engineer and university professor living in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He has developed games for BlackBerry 10, Android, and iOS. He currently teaches topics related to game development at INTEC University. At the age of 22, he started teaching at Las Americas Institute of Technology, where he earned the Professor of the Year award many times. It's OK!! but not much different By aseem gupta Since lots of beginner level cocos2d-x books in english has been published till now.Here are Some pros and cons of this one which I feel as compared to other books:**PROS: (Features exlusive to this book and it not present in other cocos2d-x (english) book)---------------Major thing:---------------1) JNI discussed, knowledge on which is very useful if you're using cocos2d-x because almost all 3rd party plugins are integrated using this. And no other book has included this topic. Also this books includes admob banner integration using JNI. And ad integration, even though this inlcudes basic integration but no other book has even talked about it because revenue source is obviously important thing for any game publisher.---------------------Small things:---------------------2) Adding minor label effects which other books didn't touch.3) Android back button4) Keeping screen alive while using accelerometer5) New audio engine discussed which again no other book has touched. Although, I still like the old audio system as it gives more flexibility. But this new audio engine is still under production phase, so it will grow better.**CONS:---------------------Small thing---------------------1) Reason for not using box2D mentioned that it is no longer active development.But I feel that its last version is still the one which can produce better physics simulation as compared to other physics engine and is stilly widely used for professional games.It used cocos2d-x inbuilt physics engine - not very good but not bad. Atleast one game 'external' physics engine should have been discussed as in other book.2) Although we can simulate physics by using simple shapes like circle/rectangle but I wish that some book would have touched a custom physics body creation. But like other books, this one also lacks it. And it is good if you know how to make custom physics shape for complex looking objects.---------------------Major thing---------------------*3)* Since, this book was purely for android development, I wish author would have discussed his tips regarding precautions while deploying the game for different android versions(especially Android 5.x where some issues come on running the game)*4)* I felt that, multi resolution technique discussed was limited and no tips on graphic part was given even related to game covered and it being an android based book, author should have included it in detail as android devices are the most diverse in resolution sizes. This would have helped to set this book differernt from other cocos2d-x book.(Note: Cocos2d-x by example :beginner's guide is better for learning multi resolution, although it is just for iOS, because it has used these techniques in every game it has covered although explanation is not much detailed)5) Somewhere I felt that author could have added more information like in fonts regarding bitmap fonts which is just mentioned in a paragraph but didn't covered using code.PS:I would recommend this book to beginners only because of some points in PROS section which is actually exclusive to this cocos2d-x book only otherwise no new content is added and the game covered is simple..Since, it is being published after 5-6 cocos2d-x(v3.x) books (in english), I expected a lot more things (or better to say different things than other books) from this book other than just JNI for which I thank the author...

By Amazon Customer Cocos2d-X is a suite of open-source, cross-platform, game-development tools used by thousands of developers all over the world. It was branched out from the Cocos2d project in November 2010.It is a widely adopted framework among mobile developers and it is fair to say that an attempt to make a book about how to use it for Android development is a natural step.I must admit that after a weak foreword I was a bit skeptical about the quality of its content; after going through every chapter I changed my mind. The book is a good reference resource and if you are happen to be starting out, as a game developer trying to make your way at Google’s Playstore this might be a good place to start.The author makes an effort of breaking down the massive engine and it's most common features into digestible bits for anyone from novice to experts. It makes a pretty good job in going from installing a development environment from scratch to a working tech demo at the end of each chapter.Personally, I liked the way the author went into detail on describing how things work under the hood. However, I would have loved to see more depth into actual physics examples and a separated chapter that went into different collision detection strategies instead of cramping those up together.ConclusionBuilding Android Games with Cocos2d-x is a great introductory book for game developers who are looking to start on game development for Android mobile devices. It is also a great starting point for people who are looking into game development as a casual endeavor.I encourage you grab a copy right now!

Great book for begginers and good reference for experienced By Francis Styck I found this book very helpful in getting the latest Cocos2d-x 3.x running on my Android devices. The book provides very clear instructions on setting up the Android development environment such as the Android SDK, NDK and Eclipse tools. After the first chapter you will be able use the Cocos2d-x Android build process to deploy a simple application to your Android device.The book covers all the basics of Cocos2d-x in the next few chapters, covering graphics, game physics, user input, text display, audio and particle systems. This is done by walking the reader through the development of a simple game. Additional information for the Android platform is also included such as handling the Android key press events.The last chapter is the best part for Android developers as it demonstrates how to add native java code to your project and goes over the Java NativeInterface (JNI) capabilities that allows you to interface with popular banner providers such as Google AdMob.Overall this book is best for anyone wanting to use Cocos2d-x to deploy an application to Android devices and provides a good overview of Cocos2d-x. It seems to be targeted at the beginner and will give the read a good start in getting games deployed on Android devices using Cocos2d-x.

About the Author

Kabir Chakraborty is Assistant Professor in the department of Electrical Engineering at Tripura Institute of Technology, Narsingarh, Tripura, India. He is a Former Head of the department of Electrical Engineering of Tripura Institute of Technology. He holds B.Sc (Physics Hons.) from Assam University in 2000 and B.Tech and M.Tech in Electrical Engineering from the University of Calcutta in 2003 and 2005 respectively. He completed his PhD in 2013 from Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur, (Formerly Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur) West Bengal, India. He has more than 10 years of teaching and research experience. His areas of research interest are Voltage Stability and Artificial Neural Networks. He has published several papers in international and national journals and conference proceedings.

Abhijit Chakrabarti is currently Professor of Electrical Engineering at Indian Institute of  Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur, ( Formerly Bengal  Engineering and Science University, Shibpur,)West Bengal, India. He is a Former Vice-Chancellor of Jadavpur University and former Vice Chairman of West Bengal State Council of Higher Education. His areas of research interest are Electrical Power System Engineering (Specially Voltage Stability, Economic Operation, Deregulation, and Congestion Management and FACTS Devices). He completed his Ph.D. in 1991 from Calcutta University. He holds B.Tech from NIT, (Formerly R. E. College), Durgapur and M.Tech from IIT Delhi in 1978 and 1987 respectively. He has 7 years of industrial and 27 years of teaching and research experience. He also has to his credit 13 books and 121 contributed papers in journals and conferences. This author gives you both the pros and the cons of the KU program By Sherry Everett Honestly, I think this book has such important information in it. This author covered a few things I hadn't read in other KU books, such as the "warm feeling" you get when you go into a bookstore, find a book you want, snuggle into a cozy chair and go into another world as you read one page after another. Reading off your laptop doesn't give you that same "warm feeling". After you read the book, you will be able to make a thoughtful decision as to whether or not KU is for you.

Cotton supplied the Native Americans with clothing fibers before the Spanish ever entered Texas. It drew Southern settlers fleeing U.S. antislavery trends during the Mexican Republic in the 1820s. By the early 1930s, cotton was produced in 223 of the 254 counties in Texas and was a central element in the Texas economy. The Great Depression created a major disruption that threatened to destabilize the entire Lone Star State. In this book, Keith J. Volanto relates the story of the New Deal’s efforts to aid Texas cotton farmers, specifically with the production-control policies introduced by the Agricultural Adjustment Administration (AAA). He explores the reasons the AAA cotton programs in Texas were instituted, the implementation problems the AAA encountered and how they were resolved, and the results of the programs. He draws conclusions concerning how well Texans benefited from the AAA cotton programs and about those who were actually harmed by them. In addition, he also examines the role of Texas politicians and bureaucrats in formulating the policies in Washington and the importance of Texas to New Deal cotton policy broadly. Volanto’s study of the AAA cotton programs in Texas is a study not only of agriculture policy but also of the New Deal itself. The AAA provides an example of how the New Deal attempted to solve a natural problem in a largely experimental fashion. The experience of the AAA—the political, economic, and legal constraints it faced—provides new insight into the(Back Flap)nature of New Deal commodity programs. It also demonstrates how the New Deal’s typical “broker state” priorities tended to address the concerns of organized groups, often to the detriment of unaffiliated individuals. From the initial farm subsidy programs and their impact on Texas during the 1930s to the AAA’s cotton programs that were implemented at the state level, very little has previously been written on this important period in Texas’ history. Brandt Dr. Volanto has written an interesting book about the New Deal's attempt to deal with ever dropping cotton prices and overproduction which only worsened the Great Depression. He writes about the various years and the attempts by FDR and the AAA department to get farmers to voluntarily reduce their crops and pay them to plow up their lands with the goal of bring production under control. He makes an interesting point in the book when he notes that severe droughts did more to help limit cotton production than did the AAA's programs.It's a short history of just one state's problems during the Great Depression. He does not compare the AAA (Agricultural Adjustment Act) program in Texas with other cotton producing states (which would have been an asset to the book) but it's a good historical read and very informative.

From Publishers Weekly This superb novel tells the story of two heroines separated by 20 years: 1978’s Beatrice Baker and 1998’s Iris Latch, both of whom become perilously embroiled in the behind-the-scenes dirty dealings at the First Bank of Cleveland. Beatrice, a 16 year-old who passes herself off as 18, lands a secretarial job at the bank just months before the bank allows the city to default on its loans and abruptly closes down without explanation. Iris, a young engineer working her first job out of the office, finds herself assigned to map out a floor plan for the bank building which has been empty for two decades. She is shocked to see that most offices were never emptied, and that many bank records, including personnel files, are still in the cabinets. Just as Beatrice did 20 years before her, Iris quickly recognizes that there’s something not quite right at the bank and she soon learns that the building is not as empty as everyone thinks. Both women seek answers to the mysteries they uncover, while a gruesome discovery ups the stakes considerably. Readers, along with the main characters, will be sucked into the secrets the bank holds and will remain guessing until the end. Fast paced, faultlessly written, and engaging, this is a page turner with a very surprising and plausible twist. There are not enough superlatives to describe this engrossing novel.

D. M. Pulley is a professional engineer from Shaker Heights, Ohio, who specializes in rehabbing historic structures as well as conducting forensic investigations of building failures. Pulley’s structural survey of an abandoned building in Cleveland formed the basis for The Dead Key.

Brilliant Mixture of Mystery, Treasure Hunting, Gothic Horror - yet Largely One Long Wind-Up to the Concluding, Meaty Action By Tinfoot So I spent my Sunday reading THE DEAD KEY. Long book... and I don't mean the number of pages. I happen to like long books. When I was a regular shopper at my local bookstores, my initial selection was based off thickness (how I discovered Robert Jordon and Terry Goodkind and others of that epic length writing). THE DEAD KEY, however, is largely one single, long wind-up, the pacing not really picking up till well past the last quarter.Mystery? Treasure Hunt? Gothic Horror? Pretty much all of it, and shows masterful thought and planning to D.M. Pulley's credit. It certainly kept me guessing what the final intent of the book was until that last quarter when the last pieces finally began falling into place- not quite all pieces, though.To give a basic idea of narrative style, the story is comprised of two intertwined timelines. It rather reminded me of an old horror 16 bit game I still own, where the actions of one timeline directly impacted the actions of the other, and the swapping around of perspectives kept the revelations coming, the "Ah hah!" moments rolling, the suspense tight with wonderment and discovery, simply an exquisite plotline that has made the game a cult classic. THE DEAD KEY largely captures the same engrossing interest, and kept me going, page after page, chapter after chapter, perspective after perspective, within that same sense of driven fascination. But it is also well padded, well padded indeed, with repeating expositional elements.An incipient alcoholic anti-heroine, whom I didn't find much empathy for, and a naïve, innocent anti-heroine, whose repeated sense of helplessness, panic, and confusion even I began finding a tad tiresome - and I am one of those who relish minutia that others would sigh over. The modern gothic environs, however, are expertly crafted. The tone is psychologically tense with a handful of honest-to-goodness chapter ending cliffhangers. The interlocking aspects never ceased to delight me. And the ending... well, a completion within the same emotional level as Arturo Pérez-Reverte's 1993 novel, THE CLUB DUMAS had concluded with (the novel may be recognized by more as the later movie, THE NINTH GATE).All in all, enjoyable, yet I do have to wonder how even more fantastic these elements would be if the book was the same 477 pages but made tauter in pacing, richer in action, and, yes, even more deeply layered. Or at least just stronger pacing. I do love narrative minutia, which Frank Herbert and James Clavell being my models of mastery, yet THE DEAD KEY only approaches the cusp of such epic grandeur without quite turning that last key.The narrative is replete with profanity and contains a couple very minor and glossed past sexual encounters. 148 of 164 people found the following review helpful. Enjoyable...a few anachronisms By J. Stumpfel Overall, I enjoyed this book. It kept me engrossed and I read it in one sitting. The pace of the story was good and the switching between time periods was handled well. I wasn't surprised by most of the revelations, but enjoyed how the story played out and how the characters were fleshed out.So why 4 stars? It's petty, but folks generally wouldn't have called "Personnel" "Human Resources" in the 70's. And even though the 911 emergency system was around, many areas didn't have the system in place until well into the 80's (anyone remember dialing 0 on a rotary phone to get the operator in an emergency?) These little details bugged me, but many people probably wouldn't even notice. I guess that's what happens when you recall a time period that you lived in and it's portrayed differently from your own memories.

I think the author's experience as an engineer brought real atmosphere to the story. I wasn't completely satisfied with the ending, but it was still definitely worth reading. My only real complaint is there was more foul language than I would have liked. Overall, I was very happy with this book; I read it straight through in one evening!
