Surprisingly Moving By Bobby Underwood It’s rare that I’m so surprised by a book, especially one in a genre (coming of age) which I hardly ever read because I don’t usually enjoy them — Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings’ The Yearling would be the rare exception. While I have my caveats, which at the halfway point of the book had me thinking three-and-a-half to four stars, the memoir grew into something quite moving and beautiful from that point forward, and made this a five star read. When the death of his father forces young Peter, his brother and mother to move many miles away from Peter’s best friend, a new chapter in his life begins. It was at this point that the cringingly frank account of Peter’s life as he grows up gave me pause; as an event described suggested this memoir might move in a direction I had no interest in reading about. Reading on, however, it only served to show the utter naivety and innocence of a young bloke so green it’s hard to imagine. That candidness, and matter-of-fact honesty is the overriding quality of this memoir. When fifteen-year-old Peter, hormones raging faster than his teenage intellect can carry them, begins his dream job on an Australian passenger liner, Pacific Wanderer, sailing to exotic places like Samoa and the Cook Islands, his passage into adulthood has begun. He, of course, is worried less about this than satisfying his fifteen-year-old urges. While he searches for an opportunity to explore them aboard ship, he leans about life at sea, life aboard ship, and more importantly, life in general.Enter Jim, a black man who is the coolest guy the young bloke has ever encountered. And the protective Cathy, who will look out for young P.T. like a mother or sister — though at times her niceness and her attractiveness has P.T. wishing for more from her. While his first time is less than romantic or satisfying, his brief dalliance with a member of the crew morphs into a friendship — with a bit of help from Cathy — showing the not-yet-wet-behind-the-ears P.T. that there can be more than sex. It is not until he meets a lovely young passenger named Sharon, however, that he encounters love. What follows is what makes this book special, the earlier coming of age narrative taking on depth as events beyond P.T.’s control make this incredibly moving. It is the second half of the narrative which is the best portion of the book for this reader, and elevates the earlier portions of the book. One has to remember at times that this is a cringingly honest account of a fifteen-year-old’s journey into adulthood. Romantic encounters, when they occur, are often described through that lens. Love of family, love of shipmates and life aboard a ship are explored in a rich and rewarding way that the reader doesn’t see coming until P.T. meets Sharon. I won’t spoil what occurs in the book, but it is very poignant, and the catalyst for P.T.’s true entrance into adulthood, and understanding. Those earlier crude descriptions of encounters then take on a romantic and poignant hue for the reader.Cathy and Jim stand out as warm and shaping hands to a young boy’s growing up, both in his view of himself and the world around him. If you enjoy memoirs of the coming of age variety, you will find something very lovely and touching beneath the crude imaginings and descriptions of a fifteen-year-old Australian lad that you won’t soon forget.

The language that the book uses makes the story come alive in a uniquely Australian way. The imagery cast me back to growing up, Australian summers and brought to life the quintessential Aussie humour that makes every good yarn all the better. There is so much to this book. I laughed like a crazy person in my lounge room, cried like a baby on a plane and felt deeply moved by the humanity and quiet strength in this story. This book is amazing and well worth the time.
