From the shadows of beyond the words pour forth like summer rain….

The Jack and Helen Frye Story is much more than the chronology of two people’s lives, it’s a spiritual quest, a yearning from the heart of soul-mates Helen and Jack who desire their story to be told, their priceless paths not be erased!

Time has a way of forgetting who was, and what was, but the written word lays it all at our feet. From a small town in West Virginia, to the gold-paved streets of Fifth Avenue, Helen Varner knew she was born to walk a path; a path that would lead her far and away from her origins. Her talents as a hat-maker and seamstress, writer, sculptor, and artist, opened doors to a gilded and rose-hued horizon.

Within these pages, unfolds the sojourn of a woman who knows what she wants and goes after it. Voluptuous and beautiful, the world’s most powerful men fall at her feet.

In 1935, 26-year-old Helen Varner marries 36-year-old playboy Cornelius Vanderbilt IV. Later, after a separation, she moves to mystical Shanghai and Hollywood.

By 1938, Helen meets the love of her life, aviation-legend Jack Frye. As President of TWA, Frye trail-blazes the dawning of aviation and tames Helen’s heart with his fleet of sleek airliners and big western charm. Jack and Helen marry by January 1941, and embark on the wings of an American Love Story, as only soul mates can share. In flights over the Western United States in their private plane, Jack and Helen settle on the Red Rock Country of Sedona Arizona to build a new life together. With a grand act of chivalry, Jack buys a massive ranch adjoining Oak Creek and hands the deed to Helen.

Frye and Howard Hughes develop the Lockheed Constellation during W.W. II and Frye loans his planes to the U.S. Government, culminating in a wartime partnership with the White House.

Meanwhile, Helen secures a grand colonial mansion on the shores of the Potomac, as a political power-center for TWA, and a home. By war’s end, in 1946, TWA has gained enough experience flying war personnel overseas, for Jack to secure the world’s commercial air routes. Jack’s dream of the first transatlantic commercial air service and round-the-world passenger travel is realized and the ‘Camelot Years of TWA’ have unfolded!

By 1950, after Helen and Jack divorce, Helen remains at their Sedona Ranch. Soon though, she is engaged to Tyrone Power. Later still, she plans a re-marriage to Frye. Tragically, though, Frye is killed by a drunk driver, returning home from a secret meeting with Howard Hughes at Tucson.

Sinking into the depths of despair, Helen becomes fodder for a notorious new-age cult called Eckankar. By 1979, she dies of cancer, but not before the group fleeces her of most her assets. Helen’s Will is burned by an ex-cult member con artist who had craftily befriended Helen before her death with his youthful charm ending her saga with a sensational estate trial.

Is this really the end of Helen’s story? Thankfully, no, Helen saw to that! Reaching across the sands of time, she engaged the services of a kindred spirit, a member of her soul-family, a writer with the passion and dedication to insure that she and Jack; their ‘telling’ was not forgotten.

Welcome to the World of Jack and Helen Frye!

Note: (The Jack & Helen Frye Story – The Camelot Years of TWA is a Biography, however, it is written in a Novel format. This to reflect a movie script style for future development.)

Want to hobnob with glamourous and exciting American socialites as they jet set their way around the world, wining and dining the elite of society? If so…then this book is for you. One word in the title sums up the aura of this great read perfectly – “Camelot”.Enter a ruggedly handsome Jack Frye, born to fly, with dreams and aspirations as limitless as the sky itself. Add to that mix the beautiful, charming, witty young Helen Varner who possessed both artistic talents and a gift of premonition. Throw into that mix the powerful and eccentric financier Howard Hughes and you’ve got a perfect formula for turning dreams into reality. From dream to boardroom to sky; from humble beginnings in life to the culmination of the highly successful T.W.A. Empire – this book has it all: accurate and vivid descriptions of the planes, historical accounts of the Frye’s lives, jaw dropping mid-air rescues, a hair raising high speed chase down treacherous mountain roads, money, power, friendships, betrayal, and just to make life even more interesting a New Age Cult up to no good. And throughout the Author uses his descriptive magic to paint the spirituality and the mystique that is uniquely Arizona. I highly recommend the book; I had a hard time putting it down and I thoroughly enjoyed the ride.

A Story of a Fascinating Couple By Elizabeth Oakes I've just finished Reynolds' book on Jack and Helen Frye, and I was entranced with them and educated about early Sedona, AZ..Helen Frye was certainly something: a wonderful example of a woman living a full life (full of happiness and pain)! The way she kept forging her own path, her insistence on living true to her emotions, her ability to change and to go with the flow, and her openness to spirituality (for better or worse) all endeared her to me. And the affair with Tyrone Power! I also loved, being a fashion devotee, the descriptions of her clothes, of what women wore during those periods. I'm old enough to remember the swish of crinolines! It is an excellent book and a tribute to two remarkable people, who lived life to the fullest, no matter what.It also gave me such a different view of Sedona, AZ, during the early years. I'm a newcomer here, and when I see photos of, say, Bell Rock in the 50s with nothing but cattle around it, I imagine if was all cowboys. Not so!The book is more than about a fascinating couple living life to the fullest; it is history and her-story! Moreover, it's a love story!

By per The Jack & Helen Frye Story was a very informative read into the glamour and glitz of the 1930's and 40's wealthy, the early airline industry days, and, of course, beautiful Sedona. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book and all the author's detail helped me to picture the story in my mind. I would highly recommend reading it.

With todays America dominated by the automobile, it is difficult to believe that until the 1920s nearly 100 percent of the US population traveled via rail. Conventional passenger-train service spread rapidly by the 1850s, but another form of rail transportation did not emerge until the turn of the 20th century: the interurban. Almost always electric, interurbans linked cities with burghs. Rockford, one of Illinoiss three largest urban centers during the 20th century, enjoyed a system appropriately named the Rockford & Interurban, dating from the citys horse-drawn streetcars of the 1880s. By World War I, the Rockford & Interurban ran from downtown Rockford to Cherry Valley and Belvidere; Winnebago, Pecatonica, and Freeport; Roscoe and Rockton; and Beloit and Janesville, Wisconsin. The Rockford & Interurban enjoyed a supernova of success, rising quickly in popularity before slowly dying when the automobile became widespread in the 1920s; the Great Depression finished the job in 1936.

Some picture details allow you to compare that same scene with how it looks today. Only negative is that there is only one map of the system which is very general in nature. A more detail map(s) would have been useful in locating remnants of the system today. Overall an excellent account of a form of transportation that existed for only a few decades.

The young African who having schooled in America returned home to be disappointed in the institutionalized mountains which he has to clear in other to bring America to Africa. His valiant fight for Americanism saw him sent to jail after a conspiracy of what might be the world’s poorest policing and electioneering. But nature fought back for the African wearing an American character as it expressed itself in restive outpouring morning till noon. For the intelligent and brilliant old man, who was a man that loved living his natural life, his intelligence took him away from his comfort zone far into the United Kingdom where his prestige matured in stature among the university community. He continued to gain a form of national recognition in the United Kingdom until when nature that he loved at winter made a final pause to his success.

By reata The short story of Mr Odo was very intriguing and full of surprises and the story of Adunwa was both thoughtful and well developed. The writer did a fantastic job in describing the characters feeling during every section of the story, it is like the reader was playing the role of Mr Odo and Mr Adunwa. The ending of the second short story was very realistic and gave the reader a sense of the African culture. Consequently, the first short story ending of Mr Odo lacked realism and needed to be more longitudinal. Overall, I gave the story a five star for the many suprises and the fundamental cultural differences in the characters of the story.

Definitely read this book if you have an Apple device, even if you're not a detective By onlyInSF If you're a digital forensics investigator (which I'm not), or a developer of Apple mobile applications who wants to know how to deal with security issues in Apple devices, I highly recommend reading this book.Although it is aimed at a highly technical audience, any lay person who owns an Apple device should also read it, or try to. It doesn't just discuss security issues, but also describes how data inside Apple devices can be analyzed, and extracted from them. The book is organized, in the authors' own words, "in the order of the main phases of a forensic investigation (identification, acquisition, and analysis)."The first chapter discusses digital and mobile forensics, including the difference between the two. The second chapter introduces Apple devices (iPhones, iPads, iPad minis, and iPod touches), and describes how to identify them. The next two chapters tell how to acquire data from Apple devices, and analyzing data in these devices. Then there are chapters on how to acquire and analyze iTunes backups, and do the same with backups stored in iCloud. Finally, there is chapter on how to assess applications, whether they're malware or not.I really liked how detailed this book was when it described the different types of tools (these include open source, freeware, and commercial software) you can use to do all of the above. At the end of the book, it gives a list of these tools. There is also a section on publications about mobile device forensics.

The author does a very good job taking the reader through the inner workings of the iOS operating system and its strengths and weaknesses. Whether you are a forensic pro or a novice you can rest assured once you finished reading this book you will have a solid foundation to build on.

Wasson I found this to be a highly readable technical handbook of iOS forensics. The authors emphasize a hands-on approach, showing not just what information can be extracted but how. The authors go into great detail on the use of many forensic tools both commercial and free. Of special interest are the numerous mini-discussions on the difficulties encountered in attempting forensic extraction and analysis, for instance the impact of Apple’s adoption of encryption in iOS 8 and later. This book can serve as a reference for iOS forensics activities. In addition to direct extraction from devices, there is coverage of the many other potential sources of forensic data including iTunes backups, iCloud and even Google Drive. For those interested in the nitty gritty of iOS forensics or actually in the business, this book provides a comprehensive look at how iOS forensics can be carried out and of the issues that will be encountered along the way.I found it to be enjoyable and thorough. I'd buy it again.

It’s not easy starting a new career. It’s further complicated when the man you turn to for advice, your father, is suffering from dementia leaving his short term memory as crippled as some of the combat planes he once piloted. In the novel, FINDING DAD, we follow the author as he recounts his initial days and the years that follow in his chosen profession. One strange work episode after another is followed by another lesson from his knowledgeable but sick father. In time, it becomes clear that the patients the author is dealing with in his professional life mirror that of his own father. From Pearl Harbor to present day this book covers the heroic deeds of our fathers during war times, the crazed actions of an unstable boss and the inspiring last days of some of our most cherished senior citizens. The author learns that the lives of our nation’s seniors are worth talking about and the lessons they can share are worth hearing. They lived amazing lives and they have much to teach us - if we will only listen.

He is all that. But novelist? Come on. So I was fairly skeptical when I sat down with Finding Dad.I finished in 48 hours. Wow! What an outstanding, engaging read. This novel is more than an emotional chronicle of a grown man's desire to come to grips with his relationship with his dad. It is a journey back to the heroism of a previous generation. A World War Two survivor recently told me that his was not 'the greatest generation' "The Greatest Generation," he said, "were America's founding fathers. All World War Two military men and women did was give their lives to save the society they created and the world."Finding Dad humorously and emotionally traverses the chasm between those of us in our fifties and those who made it possible for us to live the way we do in our fifties. It is a remarkable story about respect for our elders. I loved it.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Gripping, Honest and Heartfelt By Anonymous "Finding Dad" is a gripping, honest and heartfelt tale of how we can all learn so much from the generations who went before us; taking their selflessness and unyielding work ethics and applying them to our current lives in positive ways. Our histories matter and they help to shape us in ways often unimaginable. Mr. Lynch drives this fact home in a well-written, intimate and often humorous novel as he explores his relationship with his father and comes to know him on a deeper, more personal level; one which comes with maturity and the mutual understanding of the sometimes harsh nature of life. Touching and real, "Finding Dad" is a story for men and women alike for, as we age, we often look backward in time to our elders in search of wisdom, answers and clarity.

Something for everyone By Bruton Lynch A personal journey in which author discovers a hidden treasure in the stories told by his father; and how his father's stories help guide him through the early stages of his career. History buffs will enjoy the stories of a naval aviator others will find a compelling story of a son trying to connect with his aging father. An easy read but you will come away from this book with something you can relate to.Enjoy.

I've been tinkering with Ruby here and there but I've been having some issues understanding all the lingo (gems, rails, etc.) and how to piece it together. This book breaks down Ruby into easy-to-digest chunks and includes diagrams and screenshots as well...for me, that's the difference between a completely confusing book and one that's easy to follow. If you're just starting out with Ruby and finding it a little overwhelming, get this book! It'll save you a whole lot of confusion in the long run.

Read Ebook The Knowledge: How to Rebuild Civilization in the Aftermath of a Cataclysm, by Lewis Dartnell

How would you go about rebuilding a technological society from scratch? If our technological society collapsed tomorrow, perhaps from a viral pandemic or catastrophic asteroid impact, what would be the one book you would want to press into the hands of the postapocalyptic survivors? What crucial knowledge would they need to survive in the immediate aftermath and to rebuild civilization as quickly as possible—a guide for rebooting the world?

Human knowledge is collective, distributed across the population. It has built on itself for centuries, becoming vast and increasingly specialized. Most of us are ignorant about the fundamental principles of the civilization that supports us, happily utilizing the latest—or even the most basic—technology without having the slightest idea of why it works or how it came to be. If you had to go back to absolute basics, like some sort of postcataclysmic Robinson Crusoe, would you know how to re-create an internal combustion engine, put together a microscope, get metals out of rock, accurately tell time, weave fibers into clothing, or even how to produce food for yourself?

Regarded as one of the brightest young scientists of his generation, Lewis Dartnell proposes that the key to preserving civilization in an apocalyptic scenario is to provide a quickstart guide, adapted to cataclysmic circumstances. The Knowledge describes many of the modern technologies we employ, but first it explains the fundamentals upon which they are built. Every piece of technology rests on an enormous support network of other technologies, all interlinked and mutually dependent. You can’t hope to build a radio, for example, without understanding how to acquire the raw materials it requires, as well as generate the electricity needed to run it. But Dartnell doesn’t just provide specific information for starting over; he also reveals the greatest invention of them all—the phenomenal knowledge-generating machine that is the scientific method itself. This would allow survivors to learn technological advances not explicitly explored in The Knowledge as well as things we have yet to discover.

The Knowledge is a brilliantly original guide to the fundamentals of science and how it built our modern world as well as a thought experiment about the very idea of scientific knowledge itself.

The Knowledge: How to Rebuild Civilization in the Aftermath of a Cataclysm, by Lewis Dartnell

From Booklist Dartnell, a UK Space Agency research fellow and award-winning science writer, specializes in the field of astrobiology, including how microorganisms could survive on Mars. It’s no wonder, then, that this renowned young scientist is fascinated by survival tactics, the underlying theme of this ambitious inquiry into how people might be able to rebuild the world as we know it if an apocalypse came to pass. As much as any writer could cover the history of technology in 300 pages, Dartnell presents a good case. His account quickly progresses from raising crops to making soap, shearing and spinning wool, mining coal, generating electricity, and building radios. Of course, since this is all speculation, it’s hard to predict what people would be able to scavenge and what will be left intact or who might be on earth besides yourself. Dartnell doesn’t address questions of governing this survivors’ society or how people would collaborate on rebuilding or how hopeless some will feel without Google and smartphones. Still, Dartnell’s vision is a great start in understanding what it took to build our world. --Laurie Borman

Review Wall Street Journal:“‘The Knowledge" is a fascinating look at the basic principles of the most important technologies undergirding modern society… a fun read full of optimism about human ingenuity.”Boston Globe:“[Dartnell’s] plans may anticipate the destruction of our world, but embedded in them is the hope that there might be a better way to live in the pre-apocalyptic world we inhabit right now.”New York Post:“A stimulating read, a grand thought experiment on re-engineering the food, housing, clothing, heat, clean water and every other building block of civilization.”Booklist:“Dartnell’s vision is a great start in understanding what it took to build our world.”The Times:“This book is an extraordinary achievement. With lucidity and brevity, Dartnell explains the rudiments of a civilisation. It is a great read even if civilisation does not collapse. If it does, it will be the sacred text of the new world — Dartnell that world’s first great prophet.”The Independent:“The Knowledge is premised on an ingenious sleight of hand. Ostensibly a manual on rebuilding our technological life-support system after a global catastrophe, it is actually a glorious compendium of the knowledge we have lost in the living; the origins of the material fabric of our actual, unapocalyptic lives....The most inspiring book I’ve read in a long time.”The Guardian:“The Knowledge is a terrifically engrossing history of science and technology.... [A] cunningly packaged yet entertainingly serious essay in the history of practical ideas.”Times Higher Education:“A whirlwind tour of the history of human endeavour in terms of scientific and technological discovery.... Readers will certainly come away better informed, more knowledgeable about, and hopefully more interested in the fundamental science and technology necessary to rebuild a civilised society.”The Daily Mail:“Dartnell’s guide to surviving the apocalypse is as breezy and engaging as it is informative. I now know exactly what I’m going to do as soon as a mushroom cloud appears on the horizon. Leap in my golf cart and go straight round to Dartnell’s place.”The Observer:“A crash course in the scientific fundamentals underpinning modern-day living. The Knowledge impresses as a condensed history of scientific progress, and will pique curiosity among readers who regret daydreaming throughout school chemistry lessons.”New Statesman:“A crash course in the scientific fundamentals underpinning modern-day living. The Knowledge impresses as a condensed history of scientific progress, and will pique curiosity among readers who regret daydreaming throughout school chemistry lessons.”Nature:“The ultimate do-it-yourself guide to ‘rebooting’ human civilization. With scientific nous, Dartnell depicts probable environmental scenarios on a stricken Earth and offers putative survivors instruction in the technologies needed to craft a culture from the ground up. Many will thrill to this reminder of our species’ prodigious resilience.”Seth Mnookin, New York Times bestselling author of The Panic Virus and associate director of MIT's Graduate Program in Science Writing:“A marvelously astounding work: In one graceful swoop, Lewis Dartnell takes our multi-layered, interconnected modern world, shows how fragile its scaffolding is, and then lays out a how-to guide for starting over from scratch. Imagine Zombieland told by Neil deGrasse Tyson and you'll get some sense of what a delight The Knowledge is to read.”Ken MacLeod, author of Intrusion and Descent:“Dartnell makes the technology and science of everyday life in our civilization fascinating and understandable. This book may or may not save your life but it'll certainly make it more interesting. This is the book we all wish we'd been given at school: the knowledge that makes everything else make sense."Roger Highfield, journalist, author, and Science Museum executive:“For all those terrified by runaway climate change, super-eruptions, planet-killer asteroids, doomsday viruses, nuclear terrorism and absolute domination by super-intelligent machines, Lewis Dartnell has written a long-overdue guide to what you should do after the apocalypse: an illuminating and entertaining vision of how to reboot life, civilization and everything. Dartnell’s vision of the survival of the smartest in a post-apocalyptic world offers a remarkable and panoramic view of how civilization actually works.”S. M. Stirling, New York Times bestselling author of The Given Sacrifice:"This book is useful if civilization collapses, and entertaining if it doesn't. After the cometary impact it may save your life, and if it doesn't at least you'll know why you perished."

About the Author Dr. Lewis Dartnell is a UK Space Agency research fellow at the University of Leicester and writes regularly for New Scientist, BBC Focus, BBC Sky at Night, Cosmos, as well as newspapers including The Times, The Guardian, and The New York Times. Richard I always wondered what it would be like if all of a sudden we had some great disaster, and we'd have to reboot our civilization. This is way more complicated than it might first appear. I'm an engineer and though I know how to do a lot of things, I do not have the knowledge to make some very basic things that I would certainly like to have after such a disaster. At least not before I saw this book. For example, could I make soap? If you think about it, soap would be really important in the dirty world we would find ourselves living in after the disaster. Fairly unsophisticated people made it for themselves for hundreds of years. Do you know the recipe? The ingredients might be fairly easy to find (assuming you know the list) with the possible exception of lye. Making that is a bit of a challenge - do you know how? Maybe going to a library that had paper books on science and engineering would help - if there was one around. Remember, the internet (and electricity) would be non-existent. If I had a copy of the book being reviewed here or had studied it very well before the disaster, I'd know how to make the lye needed. By the way, excess lye can result in some very harsh soap - that is another issue that has to be worked out by the soap maker. One more challenge in the brave new world perhaps. There are numerous other basic things we take for granted that we'd have to figure out how to make after the disaster. Would you know what to do? I'm not so sure I would without having read this or a similar book(s), and I am an engineer. The book here provides us with the know how to make the basic items we would need in an initial reboot. It's nice to find a reference that tells us so much in so few pages.Note that some reviewers felt this book was a little light on details, and they may have a point in some respects - it would probably not be enough for people who aren't at least a little "handy" in some sense. But, it does point people in the right direction in only one volume. After the disaster, it might be hard to lug around a set of books. In any case, the book reviewed here does provide perspective. Some reviewers stated that there were some other single volume guides that would be more useful - Boy Scout manual, camping manuals, etc. This might be true in some respects, but I think not in others.Given the (over) dependence we see today on things electronic, maybe this book (a paper copy) should be given out and be required reading in every school, just in case. Even if the disaster never happens, this would provide some perspective for the members of the technology dependent, yet largely technology ignorant society that we have become.Recommended.

Initially, Dartnell's goal to explain nearly every major technological aspect of human existence -- agriculture, textile-making, and even producing electricity -- seemed *too* ambitious, I think he does a very nice job ... particularly given the book's length. (One would expect a book like this to be made up of several massive tomes, not a 200+ page paperback.) Granted, a few of the rebuilding processes are outlined in very limited terms: I was perhaps able to grasp his section on purifying water, for example, if only because of the numerous "survivor-style" television shows I have seen (such as "Survivorman" with Les Stroud). But for other things, such as growing crops, I think that Dartnell's truncated explanations are the way to go. Since growing conditions will vary so much from place to place, there is probably not much he could do otherwise; thus he provides the reader with the very basics. For agriculture, again, how to separate the wheat from the chaff, how to grind it into flour, etc. These are things that most members of our very specialized societies have forgotten how to do, either from leaving the tasks to machines, or to other people. In a way, the book is sort of a wake-up call for the very "problem" of specialization -- a ton of people who each know how to do only a few very particular tasks, most of which (at least in industrialized societies) will not help them one whit in the face of even a temporary disaster, environmental or otherwise. Given how much I actually learned while reading this book, I was retrospectively shocked (or even ashamed) to realize just how much I did not know -- just how many things I use each day were/are the results of the labor and knowledge of others. So if anything, the book really does underscore the continuing necessity to form "well-rounded" individuals: those who can find/make/grow at least the bare necessities of living. Like any good book, it underscores the importance of things I often take for granted, and it makes me want to learn even more.

Brown I had expected this book to be a gedankenexperiment to determine if the technology underlying modern society can be reduced to a set of principles short enough to fit in one book and simple enough to be understood by one reader. Obviously it would take far more pages and complexity to record every detail of every process and device, but it is conceivable that essential knowledge could be organized into a tree that an isolated group of non-specialists could expand via research and tinkering into a functioning modern infrastructure. The actual book is something different, but I'm not quite sure what it is. For one thing, this is no thought experiment, the author clearly expects some kind of catastrophic depopulation and social collapse (he mentions nuclear war and global pandemic as possibilities--the author is rooting for pandemic, I think because it damages only humans) or to be part of an inadequately supplied and badly trained exploration party (another planet or time travel on earth). The first part of the book consists of the author's vivid descriptions of the apocalypse (his peaceful alternatives do not get the same attention). These are drawn from science fiction movies, sometimes explicitly, and as best I can tell, resemble no actual events. Plenty of cities have been abandoned (Pripyat is a particularly apt example) without conforming to the lurid sequences in the book. New Orleans after Katrina is cited as "a complete disintegration of law and order" and "the rapid degeneration of the normal social order and the outbreak of anarchy;" which leads the author to predict Mad Max scenarios. But none of this actually happened. There was tremendous official incompetence, but thousands of stories of small-scale heroism and altruism for every crime. The closest analogues to the author's nightmares outside Hollywood are genocidal pograms and civil wars--the product of organized groups with outside technology and resources, not scattered survivors of a holocaust stripped of their possessions.Next the author gives his instructions for the immediate aftermath. The biggest problem here is his descriptions have nowhere near enough detail to be useful, and I'm pretty sure he's never actually tried any of the things he recommends. Any survival book, boy scouts handbook or camping manual will be far more help. Another problem is the eccentric coverage. He covers charcoal filtration, chemical treatment and sunlight disinfection of water (all of which require highly specific scavenging success and carry major risks) and suggests drinking from swimming pools and water heaters; but not collecting rainwater, drinking from wells or springs, or just going someplace with plenty of clean water. Finally the book gets to the knowledge to rebuild the modern world. Here again there are no details, the author's main concern seems to be teaching the names of things, with a lot of attention to common English words derived from obsolete technology. Things are not arranged in any kind of order, for example his design for a primitive loom includes metal eyelets. Another issue is many of the technologies are not appropriate for the purpose. Norfolk crop rotation is described at length, but this is appropriate only for the south of England and was developed to allow intensive use of land to grow grain for export to other regions, using specialized equipment, optimized crops and animals and a highly trained labor force. A few thousand humans trying to rebuild modern society will have plenty of land and none of the prerequisites to make Norfolk rotation optimal. They might not be in the south of England (or if they started there might have decided to move to warmer climes to simplify survival). And in any case, they will have to solve their food production issues before building the infrastructure necessary to make grain export practical. For all of those criticisms, this rebuilding part is reasonably interesting to read, and it represents the bulk of the book. If you think of it as essays on the history of technology loosely related to a survival theme, you should enjoy it and learn something. The writing is graceful and the author has an eye for interesting historical and scientific detail.I can't recommend the book wholeheartedly to anyone. If you agree with the author's predictions of the future, you'll need a much better technology guide than this. If you don't, you'll find the first part of the book silly. If you want to learn how to scavenge food, shelter and water after a natural disaster, get a good survival book. If you're interested in history of technology and have already read everything by Henry Petroski, then perhaps you'll enjoy the last part of this book, if you overlook the apocalyptic stuff.

In the early morning of 9 April 1940, Finn Thorsager, a newly graduated pilot in the Royal Norwegian Air Force, was told to takeoff and investigate rumors of unknown aircraft coming in from the south. Flying in his outdated Gloster Gladiator, Finn spotted a German plane below him; he dived down and fired his machine guns, the first shots ever to be fired by a Norwegian pilot in wartime. He made it back to base but was soon in the air again, spurred on by his leader Rolf Torbjørn Tradin's famous words, 'Every man for himself. Good Luck!' That day, five heroic young Norwegian pilots flew out on a hopeless mission to engage the Luftwaffe's invasion fleet. Finn survived the German invasion, but with the dissolution of the air force in Norway, he needed to find a new way to carry on the fight. With his friend Dag Krohn, he made the dangerous journey across Russia, Japan and the Pacific Ocean to join the new Norwegian Air Force camp, 'Little Norway', in Toronto, Canada. A year later, he arrived in Great Britain to start his career as a Spitfire pilot. Through training, dogfights, bomber escorts, making merry with his friends and mourning their untimely deaths, Viking Spitfire tells the story of Finn Thorsager's life as a fighter pilot in the Second World War. In 1944-45 he was retired as a squadron leader and given the unenviable task of flying civilian Lodestars over the North Sea, often through appalling weather conditions, dodging German fighters and flak. After the War, Finn served as a captain for Scandinavian Airlines for thirty years.

Interesting to read By Rudnei D. da Cunha This book tells the story about Finn Thorsager, the first Norwegian military pilot to attack German airplanes on 9 May 1940, when Norway was invaded by Nazi Germany. As with many other Allied pilots, he managed to flee Occupied Norway and, passing through Sweden, the Soviet Union, Japan and the USA, finally arrived at Little Norway in Canada to rejoin his countrymen and retake the fight on Germany. The book does not give much detail on the combat missions over Northwestern Europe (at least not as such as found on other similar books like "The Big Show", "I Flew for the Fuehrer", "The First and the Last", etc.) but nonetheless it is quite enjoyable to read. The author does pass on to the reader his personal admiration for Finn and his life.

The living world runs on genomic software - what Dawn Field and Neil Davies call the 'biocode' - the sum of all DNA on Earth. In Biocode, they tell the story of a new age of scientific discovery: the growing global effort to read and map the biocode, and what that might mean for the future. The structure of DNA was identified in 1953, and the whole human genome was mapped by 2003. Since then the new field of genomics has mushroomed and is now operating on anindustrial scale. Genomes can now be sequenced rapidly and increasingly cheaply. The genomes of large numbers of organisms from mammals to microbes, have been mapped. Getting your genome sequenced is becoming affordable for many. You too can check paternity, find out where your ancestors came from, orwhether you are at risk of some diseases. Some check out the pedigree of their pets, while others turn genomes into art. A stray hair is enough to crudely reconstruct the face of the owner. From reading to constructing: the first steps to creating artificial life have already been taken. Some may find the rapidity of developments, and the potential for misuse, alarming. But they also open up unprecedented possibilities. The ability to read DNA has changed how we view ourselves and understand our place in nature. From the largest oceans, to the insides of our guts, we are able to explore the biosphere as never before, from the genome up. Sequencing technology has made the invisible world of microbes visible, and biodiversity genomics is revealing whole new worlds within us andwithout. The findings are transformational: we are all ecosystems now. Already the first efforts at 'barcoding' entire ecological communities and creating 'genomic observatories' have begun. The future, the authors argue, will involve biocoding the entire planet.

Biocode: The New Age of Genomics, by Dawn Field, Neil Davies

Review "Breathlessly, Field and Davies survey the greatest hits and promises of genomics, including Jurassic Park-style reanimation of extinct species, the microbiome and environmental engineering. The thin chapters blurt out strings of recent findings, each capped with a crescendo of sensational speculations that mostly rehearse familiar ethical questions." --Nature

About the Author Dawn Field, Senior Research Fellow, Oxford eResearch Centre (OeRC), Oxford University,Neil Davies, Executive Director, UC Berkeley - Gump South Pacific Research StationDawn Field is a Senior Research Fellow at the Oxford eResearch Centre at the University of Oxford, and the Head of Molecular Evolution and Bioinformatics Group, Biodiversity Programme, at the NERC Centre for Ecology and Hydrology. She has collaborated on metagenomics studies of the 'L4 site' in the Western Channel Observatory, making it one of the best-characterized microbial communities in the world. Neil Davies lives on Moorea (sister island to Tahiti) in French Polynesia where he is the Executive Director of the University of California Berkeley's Gump South Pacific Research Station. He is the lead principal investigator of the Moorea Biocode Project, a $5m effort to sequence (DNA barcode) all non-microbial species on the island. Both are Research Associates of the Biodiversity Institute of Oxford where they are using their complementary experiences to cofound the international Genomic Observatories (GOs) Network. They have published more than 140 scientific articles (including in Science, Nature, Nature Genetics, Nature Biotechnology, Nature Methods, and PNAS) and have research interests in evolution, population genetics, genomics, metagenomics, DNA barcoding, bioinformatics, biodiversity, and data sharing. Both believe strongly in the power of concerted, international community-driven scientific actions. Field is the founder of the Genomic Standards Consortium, a growing nexus point for a wide range of international projects in this domain and both serve on its Board. Together they are working to help champion the emergence of 'biodiversity genomics' as a scientific field. BIC Codes

By Jack Anthony Gilbert Field and Davies have pulled together a solid, up-to-date, and digestible interpretation of the field of genomics. This field, which was imbued with so much promise just 10 years ago has been relegated to a 'promised to much, too soon' group; but as the authors here show, that is not necessarily the truth. The field is still bursting with speculation, innovation and exciting interactive research. I highly recommend this read for those interesting in the field, or even for those of us who would like our faith restored in the field.

By indulgence Do not be intimidated by thinking that the book might be over your head if you are not a "science person". (The rather uninspiring cover does not help.) I found it a very interesting and exciting read because it lets you peek into the latest and future research in genomics. It is a relatively slim book, the language is very clear, the paragraphs are short. The extensive biography, footnotes and index give you enough material if you want to delve deeper into the subject. I hope the writers give us more books like this!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Beautifully written, a jewel of a book. By Ila France Porcher, Author of The Shark Sessions Biocode, by Dawn Field and Neil Davies, presents a fascinating account of the emergence and progress of the new scientific field of genomics, which maps and studies the structure, function, and evolution of the DNA (the chromosome set), of each life form. As both authors are pioneer researchers in genomics themselves, the book benefits enormously by their special insight into the significance of these discoveries, what they mean, and where they might lead.Written in a clear and quite delightful style, Biocode leads the reader quickly into the drama of how the discovery of DNA launched the new science like a rocket, and then through the ways that its findings are already affecting our lives. The many fascinating details of specific projects, which were science fiction a few short years ago, make the book impossible to put down.As computerised methods of decoding, comparing, and duplicating bits of DNA have become faster, more efficient, and more economical, genomics has been zooming ahead, with new projects multiplying as fast as its brilliant researchers could envision them. It became possible to decode the DNA not only of individuals and species, but of whole ecosystems, and the authors' own project, The Moorea Biocode Project, which identified all of the life on Moorea Island in French Polynesia, was the first. Now, researchers are tackling the inspirational project of biocoding all of the life on Earth. Sampling systems are already growing and linking together to provide a brand new type of observatory, one that looks into the vast variety of ecosystems around the planet, to decode, map, analyse and compare.Biocode holds out hope for the future, because new solutions are being found to some of the Earth's most serious problems, at the same phenomenal rate as the facts. But the really important vision this book brings, is a new way of thinking about life on earth, a perspective that reveals many ways in which our ideas about life were over-simplified, and offers unexpected new possibilities. The results are monumental. I can't go into them here. You will have to read the book!
