He got several materials to study with, including practice tests online, and said that these were his favorite. In order to adequately prepare, he need to study with more than just these books. That isn't because they aren't comprehensive or don't cover enough material - it's just because of how much really is assessed on the DAT. The practice tests were very helpful as well. He got a 21 on both the practice tests and on the actual test.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. It's okay By Owais Khan Not detailed enough to do great in my opinion. Basically a review book

Best Ebook Midwest Maize: How Corn Shaped the U.S. Heartland (Heartland Foodways), by Cynthia Clampitt

Food historian Cynthia Clampitt pens the epic story of what happened when Mesoamerican farmers bred a nondescript grass into a staff of life so prolific, so protean, that it represents nothing less than one of humankind's greatest achievements. Blending history with expert reportage, she traces the disparate threads that have woven corn into the fabric of our diet, politics, economy, science, and cuisine. At the same time she explores its future as a source of energy and the foundation of seemingly limitless green technologies. The result is a bourbon-to-biofuels portrait of the astonishing plant that sustains the world.

Review "The author covers an extraordinary range of topics. . . . Midwest Maize is an excellent introduction for those wishing to learn more about the history of and current issues surrounding this high-profile cereal grass. Recommended."--Choice "Clampitt’s research and reportage sustains the book, providing readers with a unique look at an adaptable plant that does so much for so many, providing not only food but myriad other resources that most of us take for granted."--Chicago Book Review"Food historian Cynthia Clampitt explores the astounding story of how corn developed from a humble grain into one of the greatest achievements in history. This is a likeable, deeply-researched book that deftly covers a great deal of territory for its size. . . . The serious stuff is balanced, too, with sections on popcorn, corn festivals, corn cuisine and more."--Edible Madison   "Where others have focused on maize in its heartland or maize as a food crop, Clampitt presents an environmental history of corn's role in the development of the Midwest. Filled with interesting factoids."--Plant Science Bulletin    "Clampitt's book is filled with kernels of interest that can stop you in the middle of a cob's row."--Cleveland Plain-Dealer “A controversial vegetable (or is it a grain?), corn has been alternately celebrated and excoriated in America. Food historian Cynthia Clampitt jumps into the fray with Midwest Maize. . . . Take a bite.”--Los Angeles Magazine

About the Author Cynthia Clampitt is a food historian and travel writer, and the author of Waltzing Australia.

On every page, in fact, every paragraph, I was saying "I didn't know THAT!" And I grew up in the heart of the Minnesota Corn Belt -- but there was so much more to know, and it's in this book. You will like this book especially if: 1) you are a foodie, 2) you like history, 3) you are a chemist (like me) and like to see good science mixed with good writing, 4) if you appreciate good research, 5) you like a food made from corn (pop corn is well treated here!), 6) you think you know all there is to know about: the Mid West, Chicago, the railroads, Abraham Lincoln, hybrid corn, GMO, planting, farming, --- you get the idea.Well researched and heavily documented, you'll put this book on your shelf for re-reading. And you will have found the perfect gift for just about any occasion you can imagine!Dale Hugo, Professor of Medical Chemistry, Harper College, Palatine, IL

Corn and Culture: Our American Story By bookLover So commonplace is corn, especially to Americans, that the importance of corn to our shared history, is easily overlooked. In large measure, corn is woven into the very fabric of Americans as a people. It has connected us, advanced us, changed us. Decisions about corn...what we cooked, what we planted, how we harvested, how produce was sent to market, and the markets and uses of the crop, are just a few ways that ubiquitous corn is the story of Americans. Well-researched and organized for effortless and enjoyable nonfiction reading, this in-depth look at corn through a humanities lens, is witty and engaging. I'll wager that readers will have more than one "Ah ha!" moment before finishing the first chapter. A certainty for gift-giving success, give this unique book to folks who enjoy the "big picture" by understanding the significance of detail. And don't forget a copy for yourself!

From Humble Grass to American DNA By Ralph L Haynes History buff or foodie, Midwest Maize is an engaging read that will change the way you think about corn. Cynthia Clampitt's book tells the amazing story of how this humble grass has become part of the American DNA. When you understand the scope of corn's influence on our lives, flying over the Heartland, enjoying a soft drink, sipping a cocktail, munching on tortilla chips or eating meat will never be quite the same.Ralph Haynes, Heirloom Whiskey Proj. By Tiffany Long Now I must admit, I have not in any way lived a "street life" but I just can't imagine that much snitching is going on in the streets!!! Part 2 was definitely a roller coaster as many more characters were introduced, making it hard to follow at times. The book appears to be about finding out who set Dee Claire War up only to come to the end just to find out her own family gave her up...what was the purpose of the entire book??? I am definitely on the edge of my seat awaiting part 3 in hopes that the missing pieces will be found.

And this reproduction is excellent. By reproduction, I mean this: the text is actually printed from an electronic scan, and the text looks just as I think it should. I had purchased the Bibliobazaar publication of this book and was extremely disappointed. In that version, the text looks like it was printed with a laser printer low on toner, and the bolded margin comments were half chopped off. This version, the Cornell University Library version, is the one to get.

Read Ebook The Fortune Hunter: A Novel, by Daisy Goodwin

The Fortune Hunter, the New York Times bestselling novel by Daisy Goodwin, is a lush, irresistible story of the public lives and private longings of grand historical figures.

Empress Elizabeth of Austria, known as Sisi, is the Princess Diana of nineteenth-century Europe. Famously beautiful, as captured in a portrait with diamond stars in her hair, she is unfulfilled in her marriage to the older Emperor Franz Joseph. Sisi has spent years evading the stifling formality of royal life on her private train or yacht or, whenever she can, on the back of a horse.

Captain Bay Middleton is dashing, young, and the finest horseman in England. He is also impoverished, with no hope of buying the horse needed to win the Grand National―until he meets Charlotte Baird. A clever, plainspoken heiress whose money gives her a choice among suitors, Charlotte falls in love with Bay, the first man to really notice her, for his vulnerability as well as his glamour. When Sisi joins the legendary hunt organized by Earl Spencer in England, Bay is asked to guide her on the treacherous course. Their shared passion for riding leads to an infatuation that jeopardizes the growing bond between Bay and Charlotte, and threatens all of their futures.

74 of 82 people found the following review helpful. Well-Written, Well-Researched, But Violates Actual History A Lot By Reader from Washington, DC I was drawn in by this novel's premise -- the Victorian-era battle between the stunningly beautiful Empress Elizabeth of Austria and the nice-looking, but not stunning, heiress, Miss Charlotte Baird of England, for the affections of a handsome cavalry officer, famous horseman and notorious womanizer, Captain Bay Middleton. The novel is clearly-written, carefully researched -- manners, social customs and language -- and has an intriguing plot that kept this reader engrossed. I award those elements in the book a "5."But despite the author's careful research, so many major historical facts are altered -- clearly intentionally -- that my enjoyment of the book was substantially diminished. I would give it a "2" for historical accuracy in terms of its characters' lives, with an overall "3" score..For example, the book packs the struggle between the two women into a less than one year, 1875-76 -- but Charlotte is said by some sources to have been engaged to Middleton for seven years between 1875 until 1882, during which time Middleton remained the Empress's horse master during the Empress's repeated visits for hunting to England and Ireland. There's quite a difference between 1 year engagement and a 7 year engagement! The author also notes that very little is actually known about Charlotte Baird, so she has taken the liberty of giving her a passionate interest in photography. While photography was popular with some women and many men in that era, turning Charlotte into a proto-feminist with a career -- Charlotte was a shipping heiress -- seems a real stretch. Finally, Bay Middleton is correctly shown as having an affair with a married woman, Lady Hozier, that produced a daughter, Clementine, who later became Winston Churchill's wife. But he's shown having the affair during 1875 -- shortly before he meets Charlotte and the Empress -- when the actual affair took place in 1884 -- nearly a decade later. Clementine was born in 1885. A letter has been found in which his mistress, Lady Hozier, acknowledges that Clementine was his child. It looks to me like the author took the original -- and much more complicated and lengthy -- story, and attempted to write a shorter, happier, fantasy version of it.I don't mind chronology being bent a little in a historical novel, and activities imagined for people that we know little about, or gaps in their histories being filled in with plausible activities, but the alterations in historical facts within this novel are major alterations in the lives of these people. The author might have been better off writing a novel about the actual facts -- it would still have been a gripping story. Alternatively, she could have taken the characters, given them new names and somewhat similar identities, and then rearranged many of the historical facts without any problem.

Bristol Charlotte Baird, the heroine of "The Fortune Hunter" is not a particular comely young woman, but her late mother's fortune, "made her attractive enough," as the author notes, especially to potential suitors like Bay Middleton whom she meets at a ball. A handsome man with a reputation with the ladies, (and talented steeplechaser) Middleton is currently having an affair with a rich woman, but finds himself developing feelings for Charlotte, and despite the gossip, perhaps not just because she's an heiress. For her part, Charlotte, a talented amateur photographer, is not content merely to marry and settle down, like her soon-to-be sister-in-law, Augusta, something the visiting American photographer, Caspar Hewes, seems to understand.Soon a rival for Middleton will arise, in the form of the Empress of Austria, who has arrived to visit and whose invitation to become her "groom" during the hunts, Middleton cannot refuse. Elizabeth or "Sisi" as she's called finds her marriage unfulfilling and seeks diversion by traveling abroad. As she and Middleton participate in the hunts together, they find a mutual attraction developing, as well as much gossip. Though Middleton brings up the possibility of elopement with Charlotte early on, she refuses, setting into play a series of maneuvers and misunderstandings, that will take place over a season of hunts, parties, a memorable photography exhibit, and the Grand National race, in which truths will be revealed and partners found.Set in the early nineteenth century, the novel does a good job bringing the British society world to life, including the thrill of fox hunting. The tension between the characters, which must never be directly addressed, is nicely done, too. Overall, "The Fortune Hunters" is an Austen-like story about pride, prejudice and finding love despite them.

It's 1875 and Charlotte Baird, heir to the Lennox fortune, is a very unusual young woman for her time. Instead of being worried about parties and men, she is more interested in taking photographs, much to the annoyance of her family which includes her brother, Fred, and her Aunt Adelaide, as her parents are both dead. She is still too young to come into her inheritance but it does not stop the young men from pursuing her. She has eyes only for Bay Middleton, a handsome and dashing cavalry officer with no money. Unfortunately for Charlotte, the Empress of Austria, Sisi, is also in England and very interested in Bay as well. As Sisi is supposed to be one of the most beautiful women in Europe, it would seem Charlotte does not stand a chance. But Sisi is also married to Emperor Franz Joseph, but unhappily so. So who will Bay choose?Goodwin not only describes the three main characters in depth but gives us a view of Queen Victoria and her entourage. In fact, at times her descriptions of Queen Victoria is quite humorous. Further, the author gives the reader details of architecture and landscape which are beyond compare. All the characters are well developed and you cannot help liking them all except I found myself rooting for Charlotte to win Bay's affections. Goodwin also shows the strong bond between Captain Middleton and his horse, Tipsy. In fact, Tipsy seems to be Bay's true love. This is a lovely novel with engaging characters, a great story, and is beautifully written. What more could one want in a book? I highly recommend it!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. love (with twins) and suspense By Sandass This book has more twists and turns than a pumpkin patch maze on Halloween. I finished reading it right before going to bed and could not sleep because u was trying to figure out the 'what next' and 'who done it,' coming in the next book. This book was short and some people would fault that. On the flip side, if you dont like it, you don't have to fork out any more money for the rest of the series. There's at least one obviously bad person in this book. By the time you finish the series , you may discover that most everyone has more than their share of bad in them.

I missed the part that this is Part 1 of 3, so if I had seen that I would have noticed that it would have a cliffhanger. It is a pretty short story as you can see from the book information on Amazon. It isn't a clean read either with quite the astonishing first chapter. But I wasn't the only one surprised. Gabrie got quite the surprise too, making it an interesting twist in the story. Almost against her will but definitely against her common sense, Gabrie is really drawn to Jack, who is the supposed bad boy in the book. A really good question that comes through in the story "is Darren as perfect as he seems?"I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
