About the Author

Gibson Tang

Gibson Tang grew up loving technology after getting his hands on an old Apple II when he was still a young kid. Since then, he has never stopped keeping pace with technology, and after he coded his first "Hello World" program, he has been hooked on programming ever since. Following his studies at Nanyang Polytechnic and Singapore Institute of Management and serving a 6-year stint in the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN), he honed his development skills creating software and games for Yahoo! and other Fortune 500 companies. In 2010, he founded Azukisoft Pte Ltd in Singapore to focus on mobile application development. Since then, he has developed countless mobile applications and games for start-ups and big companies both in USA and Singapore. Apart from programming, he indulges in various hobbies such as soccer, computer games, and jogging in order to get his regular dose of Vitamin D and to see the sun once in a while. Occasionally, he would be on Steam or Battle.net blowing off some steam by slaying monsters and killer robots after a day of programming.

Maxim Vasilkov

Maxim Vasilkov is a mobile software developer in Azukisoft Pte Ltd. He started programming over 10 years ago. He started with iOS when the SDK was made publicly available, and from that time onwards, he developed a passion for making mobile apps. He is also experienced with other programming languages and has expertise working with various team sizes, which gave him the opportunity to look at different approaches to programming. Bren Each chapter introduces the subject from basic principles through implementation. Complex concepts, such as reference counting, ARC, data persistence, key value coding, etc were presented in a way that I was able to quickly understand, even though I had no experience in these areas nor even in device programming. It introduced new and critical aspects to device programming that I was not familiar with, such as Swift. The book engages the central topic from multiple perspectives: from review of basic concepts and their application to coding (chapters 1-3), to related memory topics such as data persistence (chapter 5-6), and KVC (chapter 7), and then returning to more rigorous review of memory management concepts and their implementation (chapter 9); capped with presentation of the authors' practical experience in memory management (chapter 10). In general, I found this book to be an outstanding combination of theory, practice and experience packaged in such a way that it was readable and useful by an experienced programmer new to device programming. The authors are clearly knowledgeable and comfortable in their field.

From the Author As a child, I dreamed of becoming a bus driver, plumber, electrician and even a cop. Instead, and unbeknownst to me during those formative years, two career paths would carry me through adult life - aviation and writing. In the seventh grade I made friends with a boy whose father had a pilot's license. On a cloudless Saturday afternoon, the three of us piled into the family sedan and headed to Santa Monica Airport, not far from where we lived in Los Angeles. I guessed that we'd just watch planes take off and land. I was wrong. Within a half hour, I was sitting in the right seat of a rented Cessna 150 a couple of thousand feet over the city. It was my first time aloft and I was hooked. Following that eventful day, I saved every dime I earned from delivering newspapers to fund my goal of taking flying lessons.Following my career as an engineer, pilot, mechanic, communications executive in the electronics industry, and finally a senior communications writer at a state university, I now make a living as a writer of books and articles about aviation. If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't change a thing. My next book project, a biography of aviation icon Allen E. Paulson, is nearing completion. An amazing man, he developed new airplanes, bought and ran Gulfstream Aerospace, set flight records, circulated with presidents and celebrities -- and owned some of the world's most famous racehorses.

In the early Apache days, covers the struggle between the Army and Air Force over who should provide close air support for the Army troops. Stories about some of the shenanigans of the marketers and customers. The author was able stand back and give an overall view of what was going on in the Company, the Army, the Air Force, and Congress; but shows an amazing grasp of behind the scenes detail. Reviewing the outstanding performance of the OH-6A, which made the longest non-stop flight in history, it's easy to visualize why the 'special ops' folks are still using variants of this 'little bird' 50 years after its initial design.

An insightful book about Hughes and the helicopter industry By BarbaraSB I knew that many books and even movies have been written about Howard Hughes concerning his moviemaking, business and flying adventures but I didn't know until I read this book that he also started one of the largest helicopter manufacturing companies in the world.The book begins with a very personal "Author's Note" that is not only interesting but lays the foundation for the rest of the book. This author's story rings with authority based on his knowledge gained as a former employee and his candid observations of the company's inner workings.Hughes and a group of dedicated employees who built airplanes like the huge Spruce Goose seaplane during World War II shifted their focus at the war's end to develop the world's largest helicopter and later to produce many smaller ones. The author makes it clear that the test pilots, engineers and mechanics were really the heart and soul of the company, filling the book with numerous anecdotes, sometimes humorous, to provide an up-close sense of what was going on in the company from the 1930's to the late 1980's. I found it very informative reading about the management and financial obstacles that the company had to overcome during those years. The sixteen pages of photographs accompanying the text aided me to visualize the various helicopters and the area of the Hughes plant in Culver City. The historical accuracy presented, evidenced by the many pages of source notes provided at the end, also really impressed me.You don't need to be a history or an aviation buff to enjoy this book. The story unfolds a fascinating slice of aviation history during the last century that has not been told before.

Not at all another one of those 'Howard Hughes Exposes' - but shows the technical depth and personal dedication of the people who worked for him. There are lessons to be learned in this book, about small, intensely-skilled organizations, management and leadership. Outstanding.

I'm new to iMacs and, unlike the Dummies series, this book is straightforward, highly readable and provides color photo illustrations. You won't have to shift through any chatter to find what you're looking for. I'm very happy that I didn't let the title dissuade me from purchasing it. Too, the price is decent. Great book!

The author does a tremendous job relating his personal tale while also providing very interesting background on the many exotic places that he and his high school friends visited during their adventure. It is a great pleasure to watch the author transform from a naive surfer dude into a man of the world. My only criticism is that the author sometimes leaves the reader wanting for more detail regarding some of his adventures. The book could be twice as long and still hold my attention and interest.

However, if you are a detail oriented reader as I am, numerous punctuation and grammar errors and some stilted/improper word choices are distracting and detract at times from reading it. Recommended reading, with those caveats.

His fascinating tale of adventure is entertainment at its best and educational to boot. I loved the descriptions of the places he went, the people he met, the boats on which he traveled, the waves he surfed, and the experiences that truly changed him and his buddy Charles from boys to men. It made me envious that I never had the courage (or naivety?) to undertake such a venture. Oh well--I can live vicariously! Thanks for showing us that the world is full of wonderful people no matter where you go, and reminding us that we're all part of the human race. Although times were simpler then, I hope the goodness and openness you encountered are still characteristic of most. I highly recommend this book for anyone--male, female, young, or old. One suggestion, though--you left me wondering what happened to Charles and John and Jeanie after you parted ways. I hope you'll write a sequel! Thanks so much!

Mean Her American Dreams” is a thrilling novelette about a strong, determined, young woman who quickly learns about love and life as she ventures out on her own from Nigeria to the land of opportunity. The main character, Annabel, is someone you cheer for with each experience and situation she seems to be literally thrown into as she quickly adapts to her new culture and surroundings. “Her American Dreams” is about self-discovery, courage, and friendship. Great read for my 4 hour airplane flight!

The construction of a dam in the gap of Smith Mountain in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, had been considered as early as the 1920s. However, the dams construction did not begin until 1960. Smith Mountain Dam closed the gap completely in 1963, and Smith Mountain Lake began to fill and form behind it. The hydroelectric dam consists of 175,000 cubic yards of concrete and has the capacity to generate 605 megawatts of electricity for up to 11 hours. Smith Mountain Dam is part of a two-dam system on the Roanoke River, and its companion dam, the Leesville Dam, is a smaller structure designed to pump water back to Smith Mountain Lake and to also generate hydroelectric power for American Electric Power (AEP) customers. Smith Mountain Lake covers 20,000 acres and has a 500-mile shoreline, which borders Franklin, Pittsylvania, and Bedford Counties. Over the years, development near and around Smith Mountain Lake has exploded, and this has presented both opportunities and challenges in regard to stewardship of the areas natural resources.

Public safety networks provide highly robust communication systems which can address the specific needs of emergency services. This has fostered the need for public safety standards -- such as TETRA and P25 -- that provide a set of features not supported in commercial cellular systems. This book provides an in-depth analysis for adopting LTE (Long Term Evolution, the 4G 3GPP radio technology) as the technology of choice, to provide mission-critical communication services.

Written by four industry professionals, LTE for Public Safety explains how LTE can be used as technology enabler for Public Safety networks. It provides an in-depth analysis on how LTE can be used by the emergency responders for their own dedicated mission-critical network and the specialized features that are needed in LTE for providing robust and mission-critical communications amongst first responders. These include features such as group call communication and proximity services, also referred to as “LTE Direct” or Device to Device communication and discovery. Excellent technical writing and editing By Amazon Customer The book is not very long when the amount of information that is presented is taken into account. I found the writing and editing to be of very good quality for a 1st revision book. The diagrams that are presented are clear and appropriate for the material.The book is oriented for features up to 3GPP Rel. 12. The Proximity Services and Group Communications topics are covered in detail. The authors are clear about what features are included in Rel. 12 and which ones remain to be worked on. Overall a very refreshing read for a highly technical book.
