"The price of a barrel of oil went up today" is a phrase that we often hear on the news, but what exactly does that mean, and how does it directly affect us? How is it that a barrel of oil extracted from Saudi Arabia or Venezuela can contribute to the price that we pay at the gasoline pump in Canada? Why do we pay more for gasoline in the summer? The author of this book has nearly a decade of experience in this industry, and this book will help you to become a more informed consumer and investor. This book became a BEST SELLER in Amazon's "15-Minute Science & Math Short Reads" category as well the "Petroleum" category.

Very interesting to learn about how and why the prices change, along with other great info like how oil is refined. I found the explanation of how the difference in summer and winter grade gas affects prices to be especially good.

Once the United States landed on the moon in July 1969, it was up to President Nixon to decide what to do in space after Apollo. This book chronicles the decisions he made, including ending space exploration and approving the space shuttle. Those decisions determined the character of the US human space flight program for the next forty years.

After Apollo?: Richard Nixon and the American Space Program (Palgrave Studies in the History of Science and Technology), by Logsdon

Review

“Logsdon (emer., George Washington Univ.) does a nice job of telling the story of what the US wanted to do in space after project Apollo. … The book includes halftone photographs and bibliographic references in lieu of a formal bibliography. Summing Up: Recommended. Researchers, professionals, general readers.” (J. Z. Kiss, Choice, Vol. 53 (5), January, 2016)

About the Author John M. Logsdon is a world-recognized historian and analyst of space issues. His award winning Palgrave book, John F. Kennedy and the Race to the Moon (2010) received a wide range of positive reviews. Dr. Logsdon is Professor Emeritus at The George Washington University's Elliott School of International Affairs, and was the founder and long-time Director of GW's Space Policy Institute.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. An outstanding contribution by a scholar who has worked these problems for decades By David S. Portree Dr. Logsdon has written an outstanding account of the vexatious events surrounding the end of Apollo and the start of Shuttle. It is even better than his earlier book on JFK's role in spaceflight. I expect to wear out my copy as I attempt to portray the Shuttle's troubled genesis in my own work.Read this book. It is important.dsfp

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. How one decision decades ago gave us the space program we have today -- for better or worse By Jim Banke "After Apollo?" is required reading for anyone interested in learning more about space history; as well as understanding how the personalities and the politics of so few can alter history and the lives of so many. And for those reasons it's also a helpful book for anyone who today is engaged in pro-space activism, because John Logsdon’s conception of the Nixon Doctrine on space suggests you may be completely wrong in your approach to altering national policy regarding space exploration.Wearing a variety of hats, I’ve had a front row seat to our space program for 30 years. (I’ve known the author for many of those years and consider him a colleague and friend, so consider that a disclaimer moving forward here.) I grew up with Apollo, and have spent my adult career with the Space Shuttle. So like many of my generation, I knew the basics of the story told in “After Apollo?”As Apollo achieved its success, and our leaders considered grander adventures for the future, pressing domestic needs and a struggling economy took the wind out of any sails of a ship aimed at arriving at Mars by the mid-1980s. If we were going to continue exploring space, we would have to settle for something that could be operated more cheaply, even more routinely. Once we had that in place, perhaps one day we could consider other inspirational ventures, such as a space station or trip to Mars. And thus, after NASA was forced to get in bed with the Air Force, we wound up with the Space Shuttle that flew so successfully and tragically for three decades. That’s the general TV Guide summary of how we got from Apollo 11 in 1969 to STS-1 in 1981. The story, of course, is much richer. “After Apollo?” tells that story in captivating detail, with revealing nuggets such as how the military influenced the Space Shuttle’s design, how the economy of Southern California was an issue in all of this, and how the “successful failure” of Apollo 13 so spooked the president we could have wound up with a dramatically different space program today – one that in retrospect may have been better for the nation in the long run.Following the paper trail of its principal characters, including insight gained by listening to Oval Room recordings from President Nixon’s secret taping system, John Logsdon’s well-documented account vividly tells of the surprisingly small number of visionaries, bureaucrats, soldiers and politicians who together molded a way forward after Apollo that would be acceptable to the one man who could approve the plan: President Richard M. Nixon. And so pay attention fellow space cadets: “After Apollo?” reveals how the big national decisions on space are made by so few people, each of whom are motivated by factors most often completely irrelevant to the campaigns, petitions, and inspirational spectacles we too often rely on thinking it will make a difference in public polling and congressional voting. You want to know how to effect change? Read this book. Study it. Grasp the meaning and nuances of the Nixon Doctrine. See what truly motivates the real decision makers. And then try to adjust your tactics and messages accordingly.John Logsdon’s “After Apollo?” shows us how we got to today. Let’s show the future author of “After Shuttle” how we could do much better.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Could be called "How Nixon let the Space Program Down" By Gregory Gudalefsky Detailed behind-the-scenes account about the politics leading to the decision to approve the Space Shuttle as the next major manned space program after Apollo. Geared more towards political buffs and less towards science and engineering.

Best PDF Ebook Cowed: The Hidden Impact of 93 Million Cows on America’s Health, Economy, Politics, Culture, and Environment, by Denis Hayes, Gail Boyer Hayes

From leading ecology advocates, a revealing look at our dependence on cows and a passionate appeal for sustainable living.

In Cowed, globally recognized environmentalists Denis and Gail Boyer Hayes offer a revealing analysis of how our beneficial, centuries-old relationship with bovines has evolved into one that now endangers us.

Long ago, cows provided food and labor to settlers taming the wild frontier and helped the loggers, ranchers, and farmers who shaped the country’s landscape. Our society is built on the backs of bovines who indelibly stamped our culture, politics, and economics. But our national herd has doubled in size over the past hundred years to 93 million, with devastating consequences for the country’s soil and water. Our love affair with dairy and hamburgers doesn’t help either: eating one pound of beef produces a greater carbon footprint than burning a gallon of gasoline.

Denis and Gail Hayes begin their story by tracing the co-evolution of cows and humans, starting with majestic horned aurochs, before taking us through the birth of today’s feedlot farms and the threat of mad cow disease. The authors show how cattle farming today has depleted America’s largest aquifer, created festering lagoons of animal waste, and drastically increased methane production.

In their quest to find fresh solutions to our bovine problem, the authors take us to farms across the country from Vermont to Washington. They visit worm ranchers who compost cow waste, learn that feeding cows oregano yields surprising benefits, talk to sustainable farmers who care for their cows while contributing to their communities, and point toward a future in which we eat less, but better, beef. In a deeply researched, engagingly personal narrative, Denis and Gail Hayes provide a glimpse into what we can do now to provide a better future for cows, humans, and the world we inhabit. They show how our relationship with cows is part of the story of America itself.

Cowed: The Hidden Impact of 93 Million Cows on America’s Health, Economy, Politics, Culture, and Environment, by Denis Hayes, Gail Boyer Hayes

Review “Cowed has made me think long and hard about how big agriculture can learn from little agriculture…. There is little doubt that the problems described in Cowed require attention and creativity, and that a healthy meat-raising industry would look significantly different from what we have today.” (Temple Grandin - Pacific Standard)“[A] valuable contribution to the study of where we―and our cattle―are headed.” (Max Watman - Wall Street Journal)“Vegetarians and vegans will champion Cowed, but so will those with ethical concerns about the future of sustainable American agriculture, soon placing it on the same shelf as Eric Schlosser’s Fast Food Nation and Jonathan Safran Foer’s Eating Animals.” (Gwendolyn Elliott - Seattle Weekly)“[A] comprehensive look at how the once-beneficial human-bovine partnership has tipped in favor of the cows, complete with suggestions about how we might begin to even out the scales―for all of our sakes.” (Lindsey Abrams - Salon)“[C]lear, direct and well researched…the book’s thought-provoking discussion of cows’ effects on our country and foods we largely take for granted is timely and well presented.” (Irene Wanner - Seattle Times)“This far-ranging and deeply researched book details the damage of factory farming to the planet and to humans―and with a lot of sympathy for the cows.” (Tom Zelman - Minneapolis Star Tribune)“[A] richly researched overview. Marshalling numerous case studies, [Denis Hayes and Gail Boyer Hayes] show how humanity could shift from industrial farming to scaled-down, scientifically backed, sustainable animal husbandry.” (Nature)“[A] broad and breezy introduction to the general state of the American cow… If you needed to explain to a non-comprehending parent why you are becoming a vegetarian, for example, Cowed would probably go over more smoothly than, say, the legendarily hyperbolic Diet for a New America.” (Heather Smith, Grist)

About the Author Denis Hayes is the CEO of the Bullitt Foundation and served as the national coordinator of the first Earth Day in 1970.Gail Boyer Hayes is a writer, editor, and environmental lawyer who has authored works on solar energy and health issues.

A Courageous Look at America's Cattle Industry and a Practical Vision for its Future By Philip Warburg If you want to know what 93 million grain-fed cows have brought to American diets, the American environment, and the global climate, Denis Hayes and Gail Boyer Hayes provide some sobering answers. The authors - both seasoned environmentalists - combine humor, lively narrative, and finely honed scientific curiosity in recounting their travels to cattle-raising operations and dairy farms across the country. Along with describing the horrors of concentrated animal feeding operations, or CAFOs, they offer encouraging examples of economically viable alternatives much less damaging to cattle and those of us who eat them. If we were to cut our beef consumption by half and shift cattle back to pasture, Hayes and Hayes maintain that Americans would enjoy a healthier brand of beef, less fatty and largely free of the chemicals now running through factory-fed meat. Will the mainstream cattle industry welcome this book? Not likely. But the authors do present a compelling compromise between swearing off beef and continuing an unhealthy, polluting status quo.

12 of 13 people found the following review helpful. A must-read! By Lisa H. Cowed is an enjoyable read, combining science and humor to educate us about the tat impact cows are having on our country and planet. I was stunned to learn that it takes 10,000 pounds of corn to produce 1,000 pounds of cow. Or that 840 gallons of water are needed to create one pound of grain-fed beef. Yet thirteen states have passed “ag-gag laws,” under which persons can be sued for voicing criticism of meat, livestock feed or conditions under which animals are raised. “Cowed” makes its case not just with the example of penned up cows, shot full of antibiotics and standing in filth and feces, but of farms that tread gently on animals and the land. This book is an outstanding overview of the need to rethink our relationship with cows, and a positive message of change. A must-read. By Valerie Tarico Denis and Gail Hayes take readers on a fascinating romp through cow history and modern cattle management practices, with detours into ecology and health. From cowboys in the Wild West to robotic milking machines where cows line up when they decide their udders are too full . . .From public lands trampled and overgrazed into barren badlands to fertile plains where cows and perennials grasses are being intensively managed to build soil fertility and drought resistance . . .From family farms and collaborative coops to the "cowschwitz" CAFOs (Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations) of California's Central Valley. . . .From deep fried testicles to lab grown meat . . .From cross-bred beefalo to cloned dairy cattle . . . . . . and the remarkable number of ways that this all affects your life and vice versa.I was enjoying the meander across this landscape until I came, late in the book, to the chapter about prions--the nearly indestructible infectious proteins that cause mad cow and related disease in humans and other mammals, with symptoms that may not show up for years--and then I was riveted. Pathogens that survive boiling and irradiation, that appear to jump species and can survive buried in the ground for half a decade?!! All of a sudden, the relationship between healthy, uncrowded animals and healthy humans got clearer for me than it ever has been. This book is full of intriguing and startling factoids, beginning with the number in the title and continuing from there (The thought of 93 million cows rather boggles the mind, as does the thought that it takes 2500 gallons of water to produce a pound of standard grain-finished steak.)I strongly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in healthy eating, compassionate animal husbandry, the environment, or the future of agriculture.

A diving expedition into Cuba's forbidden waters brings together an unlikely crew. From explorers to spies, eccentric expats to arms dealers with ties to Mexican cartels and the Russian military, this group seems as odd as they come. The shores of Cuba, US and Ukraine cannot contain the rapidly untying events on the seas between them. Beatriz Feliciana Renata Reyna has lead a tumultuous life. Born in Mexico, her feet first found American soil on the heels of her Mother’s passion, an illegal immigrant making the dangerous and often deadly run across the border. Fast forward many years and Beatriz has grown into a woman of grace, determination and beauty. Now an American citizen, she is a scientist – and an operative for the Department of Homeland Security. Her assignment seems like a dream come true; join a scientific diving expedition in Cuba under the guise of studying the reefs and once under water release remote transmitters. It seems simple, too simple – a fact that is proven when the Captain goes missing, secrets are revealed and danger starts calling. Beatriz must overcome her fears and dive deep into the Ocean's Belly Button to breathe freely again. Caught up in a whirlwind of high stakes privately funded research, profiteering and murder, Beatriz discovers more than what her mission called for. This adventure proves to be on a collision course with fate. Fast paced and thrilling, the waters of Cuba have never been more exciting – or deadly.

Since exhausting all of the Dirk Pitt adventures, I've been looking for something else to quench my thirst for underwater adventure and definitely found it with author Eugenia Frenzel's "Cuban Water Knot". The perfect mix of action, adventure, mystery, thriller and bottom time, this was an awesome read from start to finish. I loved the strong female protagonist, Beatriz, and could easily picture myself in her place in so many of these scenes. The fact that this was set in Cuba, a place that is on my bucket list, made this an even more compelling read. Definitely recommend.

By Heather G Eugenia Frenzel’s “Cuban Knot” is the kind of novel that wraps around plot and character, weaving a story with backdrop and depth that immerses you as deeply as the oceans they speak of.Beatriz Feliciana Renata Reyna has a long, unique name and has lead a, not so long, yet incredibly unique life. Through hardship and danger she has emerged like the phoenix of lore, overcoming things that would have killed those of lesser strength and spirit, though some of that fortune does come from determination and luck. Now, serving under the guidance of the American Government, she finds herself in Cuba and deep into mystery that gets more interesting with every page.Beatriz is a strong, powerful female character that leads the story in a satisfying arc, growing with the story and plot. Well written and thought inspiring, this was a thoroughly enjoyable read, one that kept me guessing and eagerly tabbing through my kindle.

An excellent and exciting plot with well-crafted characters and a strong lead make this book a winner from the first page. What at first appears to be a simple job becomes much more complicated and dangerous very quickly. Beatriz is not prepared for what is to come but she rises to each challenge brilliantly and you really see her grow stronger as the book goes on.Overall a well written and exciting book that I think anyone would enjoy. The author used very vivid descriptions throughout to really make you feel like you are there especially in the underwater parts of the book. A unique and very enjoyable story. Highly recommended.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. I Need To Speak With The Author.... Girl, What Is This Mess?! By Shantée You know... I really only read this series (past book 1), because I mainly wanted to hear some good news for Baleigh. But, nope. Still no good news, here! After book 1, no one except for Baleigh, Hamp, and Kendyl should've been present. Kori, Drew, and everyone else just kept going in circles. Break up, to make up, to break up, to get pregnant, to make up, to get married. Whatever! --- I actually stopped reading this book at some point by or before the 50% mark, because the story was being drawn out, and something told me I was holding my breath for no reason. So, I skipped to the last few chapters... and yup, I was correct! Everyone else, including all the cheaters, the people swapping partners, hoes, side chicks, etc. received good endings, EXCEPT for Baleigh. I'm confused. Why? So, even though Hamp was cheating on her long before they got married (continuously with hoe ass Kendyl, and back in the day with Kori's hairstylist), my girl Baleigh couldn't get a happy ending? Uuuuugggghhh!!! I hated this book series! - I'm convinced the author either is or was a side chick in the past, or hates somebody named Baleigh! LOL!! That is the only explanation I could come up with for this mess. A lot of reviewers from past installments of this series kept calling Baleigh a hoe, yet nothing was said for Drew freaking her own baby father's friend, or Kendyl sleeping with at least FOUR different men from as early as the first book and having a baby by somebody else's husband? Crazy. Drew wasn't s***! She was fake as hell and couldn't even be loyal to her baby father, let alone her "friend" (Baleigh). Baleigh needs to re-evaluate her life and let go of all those fake ass friends, and that disgusting husband of hers. Kendyl made my blood boil! So, author, moral of the story is: be a hoe, pay your bills with p*ssy, sleep with your man's bestie (who is also your new bestie's man), and in the end you'll still get a ring and stumble upon a huge pay day?! SMFH! The whole situation with Hamp & Kendyl, and why he's so obsessed with her, is so unreal it's not even funny. --- I don't remember how the editing was, because I read the book a month ago. BUT, it was long as s***! Print Length: 558 pages. Again, I didn't read all that!

This has got to be one of the worst and most unbelievable books I've read in a long time. The previous reviews must be friends or relatives. I'm glad it's on Kindle unlimited or I would've gotten my money back.

Regardless of what agreements were made in the past didn't grant him a pass to do as he pleased. I was hoping Baleigh would focus on someone that could completely make her happy instead of constantly questioning the status of her relationship. Kendyl was being petty one too many times. Slim was a trip but needed to learn how to keep his mouth close at times. I was glad Hunt was finally trying to do right by Drew and focus on his family. Drew had her moments but sometimes she was reading into too much and making more of what Kori told her about the past. I loved Kori and Jackson's relationship the most. The honesty they shared was a plus and him going above and beyond to please her was so sweet. It was good Cori reached out and chose to be a part of his daughters life. He was a little suspect at first and I didn't know what to expect. Payton had a lot going on but one Kori checked her I was like alright now.
