About the Author Marc Tayer wrote Televisionaries following a thirty-year career in the media and communications technology business. I found it both entertaining and enlightening and an excellent review of a very interesting time By ed I learned so much reading Televisionaries even though I was there during the early years. I can say that Marc was totally accurate in describing the parts that I already knew, so I can only assume that the rest is spot on as well. Rated 4.5 of 5This is a phenomenal insider look at the concept, creation, and growth of the digital television industry.When I sit and watch Netflix on my 56" flat-screen HD television, I know that a lot of time and effort went in to the creation of this technology, but of course, like most people, I know next to nothing about how it all happened. Thanks to Marc Tayer, who was in on the ground floor of the development of this technology, we can get a peek at how this all came about.The first thing to recognize is the timing. It's 2016 as I watch streaming, digital content on my HDTV. When was this technology created? The HD TVs started appearing on the market about a decade ago. That's right...it's only been about ten years since HDTVs were reasonably on the market. So when were they developed? THAT goes back a little further.You can practically pinpoint the year 1982 as the start of the digital era, when a new company had a contract with HBO for satellite television encryption.Starting with this event in 1982, Tayer details all the stepping-stones to the development of digital, HD technology with incredible precision and insight. And he introduces us to a cast of characters that would rival a Tolstoy novel.Because Tayer is an insider and was a part of this process from an early stage, he is able to offer some incredible insight in to the people (why were they hired) and the process. And it would be easy for Tayer to emphasize his role in the process, or to only report on those aspect in which he was directly involved, but this is much more than a memoir. This is a report on the process as a whole. This isn't just a one-person's point of view tale. There has been a vast amount of research done to prepare for this book and Tayer notates his research meticulously. In fact the last 25% of the book is filled with annotation, glossary, and index. And kudos to the publisher for making the notes on my digital copy of the book, easy to access.At times, the book reads a little like a technical manual, but given the nature of the topic, one has to expect there will be a fair amount of discussion about things like bandwidth, compression, bit-rate, and so forth. I am not a Luddite, but I'm far from being highly knowledgeable about the technical side of our modern technology. Marc Tayer writes about this in a very straight-forward, practical manner, and yet it doesn't get bogged down in technical lingo and it is very easy to read.We take our technology for granted, but when we stop to think about it, we have to realize that there was a time when the science behind our technology was only theory. For instance,... consider that a pure “uncompressed” digitized HDTV signal would take up to 50 cable channels, a total of 300 MHz of bandwidth. That is a completely impractical proposition since it amounts to a third or a half of the entire bandwidth of a cable system. Squeezing one or two digital HDTV channels into a single 6 MHz channel, while preserving stellar video quality, was a feat deemed impossible at the time.While this work was cutting edge ... leading the cutting edge ... at the time, we know that we are in a very fast-moving world and the changes in technology are rapid, and almost as interesting as the history of the development of this industry is Tayor's report on the future and where we're headed. This isn't just supposition, but a report on what he knows is currently being developed. Of course this means that this book (or this portion of this book, at least) will be obsolete in ten years.I was completely captivated and I highly recommend this book.Looking for a good book? Digital TV Business History, Technology Primer, and Memoir By Becky This is a multifaceted book by someone qualified to write about all of it: history of the digital TV business, profiles of powerful business leaders, technical aspects of digital television, the evolution (and convergence) of digital technologies at this new stage of innovation. Although the book covers some complex business deals and technological details, it moves right along because of the fluid writing style and numerous revealing anecdotes about people who have figured prominently in the business press in the past couple of decades. The book is also divided into numerous short chapters, so it's easy to access and digest when a busy reader's time permits. Reading the book required my full attention, but it was very informative and elucidating.As a long-time San Diego resident, I especially enjoyed reading about some of the early innovators who helped to make our region a technological powerhouse. Full disclosure: I worked with the author to finalize the manuscript, which was one of the best-written manuscripts I've ever received. I happen to know that the author supplemented personal memories with painstaking research.

Im Jahr 2010 wagte sie den großen Schritt und stellte einige ihrer Erzählungen auf einer Fanfiktion- Seite einer breiteren Leserschaft zu Verfügung. Ihre Angst Spott und Häme dafür einzustreichen, war mehr als unbegründet. Sie hatte durch ihre provokanten aber ehrlichen Geschichten schnell eine große, begeisterte Leserschaft und gewann einige Wettbewerbe und Preise. Durch diese Erfolge ermutigt veröffentlichte sie im Jahr 2013 ihren ersten erfolgreichen Roman "Immer wieder Samstags" und gehört seit dem zu einer der meistgelesenen Autoren auf dem ebook- Markt. Miller does it - prolific isn't the word for this author - still - he does a great job covering the subject with great photos and text - I think Mr. Miller is a firm believer that a "picture is worth a thousand words" - which is fine with me - if you're interested in ocean liners or Canadian Pacific liners - this book is for you.

Enjoyed these well written accounts & photos on this almost forgotten fleet of ocean liners By Dave Murphy A collection of short summaries of what happened to Canada's Canadian Pacific ocean liner Atlantic fleet and where all the ships came from. I learned that following summertime Atlantic crossings from Quebec to the UK and wintertime crusing out of New York, the last 2 CP ships were sold to became Carnival Cruiseline's original 2 ships - Mardi Gras & Carnivale.

Pretty Good, There are Better Books Out There By TxF At the time of this review (2015/06/29) I have purchased pretty much every Spark, Kafka and Hadoop (including YARN) book available on Amazon. This one is a good middle-of-the road, get up and running book for Spark. It doesn't including any streaming or graphx instruction, but most of the online resources are better and more up-to-date for these subjects anyhow. I found the OReilly Book, "Learning Spark" to be a much better book from a thoroughness and readability (grammar, phrasing) standpoint.One of the topics that was unique to this text was the brief walkthrough on how to deploy and test code; quite helpful.

Review of "Fast Data Processing with Spark" (Second Edition) By PJG This is a useful and clear guide to getting started with Spark, and the book is a big improvement over the first version. A rapid overview of the basics, from installing Spark and then to gradually going through some of the engine's capabilities. Use of HBase and MLib are content that is helpful and well-explained.As with the first book, having examples in Python, Java and Scala is either very useful or a little annoying, depending upon your preference.Finally, at only 156 pages this is a very brief overview. Depending upon the experience of the reader, this may not be a problem, and anyone with sufficient background who wants a quick overview of the salient featuresof Spark before moving on to advanced topics would likley get on well with this book.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Excellent Book for you to get start with Spark By Henry P Yang I really love this book. It provide me the good start to get to know Spark. It also provided the good code example for me to run Spark. In the official Apache Spark site, it didn't state clearly about the configuration and the way to build the application. This book stated the detailed configuration with the code example to build the application as the JAR. I followed the book, code example and POM.xml, I can quickly build the application and submit the job to Spark Workers. The book also helped me a lot to understand the other Spark key features such as Spark SQL and Machine Learning. I am so glad to implement the Spark as the part of Analytic Platform in my company successfully. My manager was very happy about it.
