This book made me rethink my social media plan. I gave it 4 stars because there was no mention of how to use Instagram and I was really looking for that information. All other social media platforms were covered and now I have a new plan.

“A gripping, suspenseful page-turner” (Kirkus Reviews) with a “fast-paced, detailed narrative that moves like a thriller” (International Business Times), Fukushima teams two leading experts from the Union of Concerned Scientists, David Lochbaum and Edwin Lyman, with award-winning journalist Susan Q. Stranahan to give us the first definitive account of the 2011 disaster that led to the worst nuclear catastrophe since Chernobyl.Four years have passed since the day the world watched in horror as an earthquake large enough to shift the Earth’s axis by several inches sent a massive tsunami toward the Japanese coast and Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, causing the reactors’ safety systems to fail and explosions to reduce concrete and steel buildings to rubble. Even as the consequences of the 2011 disaster continue to exact their terrible price on the people of Japan and on the world, Fukushima addresses the grim questions at the heart of the nuclear debate: could a similar catastrophe happen again, and—most important of all—how can such a crisis be averted?

Fukushima: The Story of a Nuclear Disaster, by David Lochbaum, Edwin Lyman, Susan Q. Stranahan, The Union of Concerned Scientists

From Booklist *Starred Review* Japan assured the public that its 54 nuclear power stations, even those built in seismically active regions, were perfectly safe. Then on March 11, 2011, a magnitude 9 earthquake hit, shifted the earth’s axis, caused a tsunami that killed nearly 19,000 people, and brought the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant to the brink of utter disaster. Lochbaum, head of the Union of Concerned Scientists’ Nuclear Safety Project; Lyman, a senior scientist for the same organization; and Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Stranahan, who covered the Three Mile Island nuclear accident, pilot the first in-depth account of all that went nightmarishly wrong. Their thriller-like, minute-by-minute chronicle covers every harrowing technical breakdown, backed by briskly informative illuminations of the science underlying the boiling-water reactors and the systems designed to prevent their meltdown. They are equally precise in their coverage of the human side of the story, from the grave dangers confronting the plant’s valiant staff to the scrambling of public officials to the trauma of evacuees as explosions wracked Fukushima and radiation leaks increased. As the crisis at Fukushima continues, this exacting and chilling record of epic failures in risk assessment, regulation, preparedness, and transparency will stand as a cautionary analysis of the perils of nuclear power the world over. --Donna Seaman

Review "No one with an interest in the present and future of nuclear power in the United States should miss it."—Los Angeles Times"This exacting and chilling record of epic failures in risk assessment, regulation, preparedness, and transparency will stand as a cautionary analysis of the perils of nuclear power the world over."—Booklist"A vivid picture emerges of utter confusion in the hours and days after the tsunami."—Nature"A riveting and meticulous account of the disaster as it unfolded."—The Japan Times"[An] eye-opening exposé…[that] points to the scary fact that America can suffer a Fukushima-type event if critical steps are not taken."—Publishers Weekly

How “many” is “many?” And who are these people who oppose advance planning re. accidents?Chapter 1 describes the events of March 11, the day of the tsunami – and it does it well – but on page 27, a two page insert begins that discusses radiation and its effects on the body. While that’s timely, no mention is made of LNT theory or its flaws, though the subject appears briefly (and inadequately) later in the book.Chapter 2 is notable for its apparently accurate description of the relationship of Tepco and the Japanese government agencies, which it termed “incestuous.” Moving on, it reviewed events at Three Mile Island and Chernobyl, but for some reason neglected to note that Chernobyl lacked a robust containment structure that is required elsewhere in the world - structure that could have greatly reduced the disaster if it had been in place. Then, on page 48, I learned something new – that “Tepco had been falsifying safety records for years.”The writers are competent, and their research impressive, but I’d complain that the subject of LNT, which finally showed up on page 216, received little comprehensive attention, and nothing like the information in Robert Hargrave’s Radiation: the Facts, was included. That information is available free from tundracub@mchsi.com.Furthermore, the authors avoided a golden opportunity to point out that if the Fukushima reactors had been Molten Salt Reactors, there would have been no crisis. Neither did they mention that Tepco’s Onagawa plant on the same coast, which had a much higher seawall, easily survived the event.Fukushima, though tarred as a nuclear failure, was caused by a long chain of corporate indifference, rule-breaking, penny pinching and lying combined with a government “oversight” panel that failed to do its job.Grade C book, well written, but flawed by what it should have included, but didn’t. Cannara As a long-time UCS supporter, I'd hoped for better from the authors. In speaking with Lochbaum in SF last week, I asked why they failed to mention TEPCO's removal of many meters of natural seawall elevation at Fukushima, simply to lower construction costs. His answer, "It was in the draft", but the publisher had a word limit -- really?I asked further why no mention of the Onagawa plant, ~30 miles closer to the quake center and receiving of a higher tsunami, yet surviving and even housing refugees from the tsunami. No answer. The "inconvenient truth" for UCS and these authors is that Fukushima demonstrates the safety of well-regulated and implemented nuclear power. TEPCO officers had a long history of malfeasance and collusion with government and regulatory officials. Onagawa, in fact, was designed using Lochbaum's own criterion of: "X plus One" -- design for at least known worst case X and add one more level of safety. In court, we must swear a 3-part oath. Back to the cave By x The book starts with an excellent description of the events as they unfolded and gets into great details about the American's thoughts on the disaster. It is also typical of the anti-nuclear scare lobby that sees no future for nuclear power. What is missing is a grand overview of nuclear power concepts: The book glosses over the massive evidence against the linear-no-threshold hypothesis for radiation damage, the failures of mob-led policy making in "democracies", the absolute need to locate nuclear facilities underground and the requirement to make reactors simpler, not more complicated. Much like in many other areas like "chemicals", "genetic modification", etc. we are retreating into caves instead of learning and advancing.

In 1807, Robert Fulton, using an English mail-order steam engine, chugged four miles an hour up the Hudson River, passing into popular folklore as the inventor of the steamboat. However, the true first passenger steamboat in America, and the world, was built from scratch, and plied the Delaware River in 1790, almost two decades earlier. Its inventor, John Fitch, never attained Fulton's riches, and was rewarded with ridicule and poverty. Considering there was not a single working steam engine in America in the early 1780s, Fitch's steamboat's development was nothing short of remarkable. But he faced competition from the start, and he and several other inventors fought a string of bitter battles, legal and otherwise. Steam tells the dramatic story of Fitch and his adversaries, weaving their lives into a fascinating tale including the likes of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin. It is the story behind America's first important venture in technology, the persevering and colorful men that made it happen, and the great invention that moved a new nation westward.

Steam: The Untold Story of America's First Great Invention, by Andrea Sutcliffe

From Publishers Weekly Although schoolchildren are taught that Robert Fulton invented the steamboat in 1807, the reality is far more complex. Sutcliff (editor of Mighty Rough Times I Tell You) demonstrates that Fulton was a latecomer to the effort to build a commercially viable steamship. A full two decades before the Clermont carried passengers between New York City and Albany, the largely forgotten Virginian James Rumsey and Connecticut-born John Fitch battled each other to be the first to launch a steam-powered boat and for potentially lucrative waterway monopolies. Fitch was partially successful, running a steamboat commuter service between Philadelphia and Trenton during the summer of 1790, but couldn't compete with stagecoaches. Sutcliff illuminates the importance of the steamboat to the developing United States, explaining how boats that could bring goods upriver would unite the western portion of the country with the east, increasing trade dramatically and permitting greater development of the frontier. Sutcliff's story is one of political intrigue, involving virtually all of the nation's founding fathers, mixed with scientific acumen and a sense of business ethics so low that even in today's climate many of the principals' actions would sound an alarm. Sutcliff offers intriguing material in an extremely readable volume, though she doesn't provide any new insight into the personalities of the protagonists. 16 pages of b&w illus. A Brilliant Achievement By Robert Morris Sutcliffe really does tell a compelling story about "America's first great invention" which, to the best of my knowledge, has not been adequately told until now. Most of us learned early in life that Robert Fulton invented the first steam-powered boat, just as we were also told in school that Thomas Edison invented almost everything else, including the light bulb. In fact, James Rumsey and John Fitch competed strenuously to be the first to launch a steam-powered boat. During the summer of 1790, Fitch launched a steamboat commuter service between Philadelphia and Trenton but was unable to make it profitable in competition with stagecoaches. It was not until almost 20 years later (1807) that Fulton's Clermont carried passengers between New York City and Albany. The need for water transportation was obvious, hence the importance of barges but they could not proceed against the current and had to be towed back or returned over land for their next voyage. What if the power of steam could be used to solve that problem? Of course, those whose economic self-interests would be threatened by (in effect) a steam-powered barge -- notably owners and employees of stagecoach and barge companies -- did all they could to oppose efforts by Rumsey and Fitch. They delayed but could not ultimately deny what proved to be the inevitable commercial success of steam-powered boats, "America's first great invention."Sutcliffe's writing skills are such that her presentation of historical material reads like a novel worthy of Charles Dickens in his prime. Her narrative has everything: passionate and determined antagonists, a plot filled with crisis and conflict, conspiracies, use and abuse of political influence as well as all manner of anecdotes which help to reveal the stresses, tensions, and (yes) opportunities which developed during the years immediately following the American Revolution.Great stuff!

Robert Fulton Had Help, He just Didn't Admit It By John Matlock When Isaac Newton was being congratulated for his schentific achievements he said, "If I have accomplished anything it is because I stood on the shoulders of giants who went before me."When Robert Fulton produced a steam boat he took all the credit and got away with it. His achievements were great, but only because a bunch of inventors went before him. He too stood on the shoulders of giants, he just didn't admit it.Andrea Sutcliffe has done a good job here of pulling together the history of the development of steam powered vessels in the United States. She mentions that Henry Miller Shreve (after whom Shreveport, Louisiana was named) built some steam boats. I tend to say that the thing Robert Fulton built was really a steam ship, that is a deep draft vessel, suitable for use in deep rivers like you find in the Northeast. Shreve invented (along with some help of course) the typical Mississippi River Steamboat. This is probably not important, but when we think of the early boats, we tend to think of riverboats on the Mississippi not the early boats on the Hudson.Recommended book.

Smith In school, we learned to say "Robert Fulton" whenever we were asked to name the inventor of the steamship. Alas, not only is that answer wrong; but a correct one cannot be summed up by just one name, one year, or one event. Andrea Sutcliffe unravels the tangled web of men, machines, failures, successes, financial backers, patents and politics involved in getting steamships chugging on American rivers during the time period of 1784 to 1811. Here we learn about people like John Fitch and James Rumsey. We discover how George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were involved in the process. We read about boiler explosions, innumerable tinkerings and improvements, and proving "who had what idea when." The newly-formed Patent Office plays a huge role in this drama. Robert Fulton doesn't even make an appearance until the last third of the book. Throughout it all, one has to wonder about the tenacity and sanity of the men who not only had to deal with the temperament of machines, but also with the skepticism of state and federal authorities. Imagine attempting to take a prototype steamboat down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers during the New Madrid earthquake of 1811! Why didn't we ever hear about these stories in school? As for Robert Fulton: "As Fulton freely admitted, he never really invented the steamboat. Rather, he built the first steamboat that really worked." (p. 180) And he comes off as a dandy and an opportunist in this book. You might scoff and ask, "How interesting can the history of the steamboat be?" Read this book and find out. The miracle is that this invention ever came to fruition.

However, this book for Step 3 is way too basic and lacking tons of information. Anytime I referred to this book for information on questions from the question banks, the information was never there. The information that is present is never to the level that Step 3 expects us to know. The CSS portion in the back consists of 100 cases presented in the most basic format with zero explanations for the thought process or really any help regarding how the CSS portion works.Bottom line, save your money and focus on the question banks. For the CSS portion, buy Conrad Fischer's CSS book. As usual, he comes off obnoxious, but at least he does a good job explaining the thought process behind the CSS process and cases.

They confuse alpha and beta blockers repeatedly By amazonshopper19384 This is pretty bad-- I'm not even 3 chapters in and they have consistently referred to beta blockers as alpha blockers (more than once). That's a big enough mistake I have to wonder what else might be wrong.I really wanted a text (non Qbank) resource but this isn't it. Save your money.
