The Art of War (Xist Classics), by Sun Tzu

Amazon.com Review The Art of War is the Swiss army knife of military theory--pop out a different tool for any situation. Folded into this small package are compact views on resourcefulness, momentum, cunning, the profit motive, flexibility, integrity, secrecy, speed, positioning, surprise, deception, manipulation, responsibility, and practicality. Thomas Cleary's translation keeps the package tight, with crisp language and short sections. Commentaries from the Chinese tradition trail Sun-tzu's words, elaborating and picking up on puzzling lines. Take the solitary passage: "Do not eat food for their soldiers." Elsewhere, Sun-tzu has told us to plunder the enemy's stores, but now we're not supposed to eat the food? The Tang dynasty commentator Du Mu solves the puzzle nicely, "If the enemy suddenly abandons their food supplies, they should be tested first before eating, lest they be poisoned." Most passages, however, are the pinnacle of succinct clarity: "Lure them in with the prospect of gain, take them by confusion" or "Invincibility is in oneself, vulnerability is in the opponent." Sun-tzu's maxims are widely applicable beyond the military because they speak directly to the exigencies of survival. Your new tools will serve you well, but don't flaunt them. Remember Sun-tzu's advice: "Though effective, appear to be ineffective." --Brian Bruya

Review "The Art of War is among the greatest classics of military literature ever written. Sun Tzu warfare is as applicable today as when the book was written some 2,500 years ago....Pick up The Art of War and read it."--General A.M. Gray, Marine Corps Gazette

"As a reflection of the Chinese mind, this little work is as relevant as any Confucian classic."--The Times (London)

"Westerners have dozens of books to choose from if they want to learn about Japanese philosophy and military tactics....But when the Japanese, especially those in business, want information on the subject, many turn to an ancient Chinese, not Japanese, military manual, The Art of War....Shows managers how to be fearless in resolving conflicts."--Boardroom Reports

"Shows managers how to be fearless in resolving conflicts."--Boardroom Reports

"A brief tract on strategy that has been admired in China for centuries. Some of Mao Tse Tung's most eloquent thoughts are merely rehashes of Sun Tzu and his interpreters."--The Los Angeles Herald Examiner

"Samuel Griffith's original and scholarly translation of The Art of War shows how good scholarship can make an easily readable translation that is much more useful to modern readers." --The Philadelphia Inquirer

Review “Thomas Cleary’s translation of Sun Tzu’s two-thousand-year-old Art of War makes immediately relevant one of the greatest Chinese classical texts. Absorb this book, and you can throw out all those contemporary books about management leadership.”—Newsweek

Let's not pretend otherwise.Having said that, the ancient Chinese master strips away all the familiar trappings of war - the warriors, weapons, forts and tactics - to reveal the essence of conflict and how to win.His lessons are as valid here and now as they were in an empire a long time ago and far, far away. It simply does not matter how you are fighting, what you are fighting over nor even why you are fighting. If you are forced into conflict with another, the lessons in this book will guarantee victory.Brute strength, overwhelming force, super weapons, holding the high ground, none of these are required for victory. All that is needed is a leader who can understand and apply the principles of warfare.Essentially it boils down to three ideas.1. Know yourself.2. Know your enemy.3. Only fight when you can win.Do this, and you will win competitions, elections, games. Anything that involves conflict. Even wars.Sun Tzu's elegant language lays bare the principles of warfare, illustrating his lessons with examples from Ancient China. It is a thought-provoking, colourful and valuable book.

Dukart The Art of War seems to be a classic piece of Chinese philosophy that is easy to translate into a mediocre work. I've read a number of translations of Sun Tzu that are clunky and have none of the wit of the original text. Now, I don't read ancient Chinese, but when a Chinese philisophical text reads like a manual for a microwave, you know something is lost in translation. On the other hand, this translation, done by Thomas Cleary, showed me the subtlety in the Art of War. In addition to the work itself (which would make a very thin book) there is a long, interesting introduction written by the translator which I found very helpful in thinking about the Art of War, as well as helping to put the work in both a historical context, and the context amongst many of the other ancient Chinese philisophical works. How Sun Tzu's work relates to Taoism is very interesting. Also, there are selected commentation on each of the paragraphs of the Art of War. These commentaries were written over different periods of time by different Chinese philosophers. These help to show how many different points of view can exist over a single statement made by Sun Tzu.I find this translation very well done, and I can easily recommend it to anyone who wants to read The Art of War.

A timeless classic that has practical application By Joanna Daneman I got this particular edition of Sun Tzu's Art of War at a strategy course for sales. I already had a copy of it at home, but this edition is so nicely done that I gave my old copy away and kept this one. The introduction of James Clavell is a nice touch. It is amazing to me that this book is not read in high schools or colleges in favor of Machiavelli's work (The Prince or The Art of War.) Sun Tzu's writing is clear and to the point. Unlike the popular Book of Five Rings by Musashi, this book is not metaphorical and poetic; it's downright practical. And it's not hard to read, unlike many classics. If you are doing business in China, this is also a good book to know. I mentioned some of the classic strategies while giving a course in China, and every member of the class had read it, knew it well, and gave me many examples from recent Chinese history where Sun Tzu's strategies were employed. This book is close to their hearts, and will give you insight if you are doing business in the East.Of course, the most famous anecdote from this book is about gaining the obedience of troops; the emperor, wishing to interview Sun Tzu for the commission of general, asked if Sun Tzu's military principles could be applied to women. Sun Tzu replied yes, the principles worked for women as well as men. Accordingly, Sun Tzu was given the task of organizing the emperor's many concubines into an army. Sun Tzu lined up the concubines and set the two favorites as officers at the head of the columns. He gave them a simple set of orders to march and drill (eyes front, right face, about face. The drums sounded and instead of following the commands, the girls simply giggled and blushed. He repeated the orders again, saying that if the orders were not clear, it is first the fault of the general. He repeated the commands, and the girls simply stood and giggled again. "If words of command are not clear and distinct, if orders are not thoroughly understood, the general is to blame. But if his orders ARE clear, and the soldiers nevertheless disobey, then it is the fault of their officers." Upon saying this, he ordered the two concubines at the head of the troop, favorites of the emperor, to be beheaded. The emperor hurriedly sent down the command to stop, he had no desire to see his favorites executed. The emperor said "We are satisfied that the general knows how to command."But Sun Tzu said, "Once having received the commission, there are certain commands I am unable to accept." And he ordered the two favorites to be beheaded. Once again, he gave the commands. The concubines marched, whirled about and drilled in perfect order. The emperor appointed Sun Tzu general.

Excerpt from Polite Conversation: In Three DialoguesIn some ways nothing could be a better introduction to the "Polite Conversation" than the account of it which Mr. Thackeray has given in his "English Humourists" (though under the head of Steele, not Swift), as illustrating the society of the period. That account is in its way not much less of a classic than the immortal original itself, and it is purely delightful. But it neither deals nor pretends to deal with the whole of the subject Indeed, the idea of Swift's character which the Conversation gives does not square altogether well with the view - true, but one-sided - which it suited Mr. Thackeray to take of Swift.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In the first years of the twentieth century, motoring across the vast expanses west of the Mississippi was at the very least an adventure and at most an audacious stunt. As more motorists ventured forth, such travel became a curiosity and, within a few decades, commonplace. For aspiring western travelers, automobiles formed an integral part of their search for new experiences and destinations—and like explorers and thrill seekers from earlier ages, these adventurers kept records of their experiences. The scores of articles, pamphlets, and books they published, collected for the first time in Motoring West, create a vibrant picture of the American West in the age of automotive ascendancy, as viewed from behind the wheel. Documenting the very beginning of Americans’ love affair with the automobile, the pieces in this volume—the first of a planned multivolume series—offer a panorama of motoring travelers’ visions of the burgeoning West in the first decade of the twentieth century. Historian Peter J. Blodgett’s sources range from forgotten archives to company brochures to magazines such as Harper’s Monthly, Sunset, and Outing. Under headlines touting adventures in “touring,” “land cruising,” and “camping out with an automobile,” voices from motoring’s early days instruct, inform, and entertain. They chart routes through “wild landscapes,” explain the finer points of driving coast to coast in a Franklin, and occasionally prescribe “touring outfits.” Blodgett’s engaging introductions to the volume and each piece couch the writers’ commentaries within their time. As reports of the region’s challenges and pleasures stirred interest and spurred travel, the burgeoning flow of traffic would eventually and forever alter the western landscape and the westering motorist’s experience. The dispatches in Motoring West illustrate not only how the automobile opened the American West before 1909 to more and more travelers, but also how the West began to change with their arrival.

Motoring West: Volume 1: Automobile Pioneers, 1900–1909From The Arthur H. Clark Company

Review “Peter Blodgett’s Motoring West, covering the period 1900 to 1909, includes accounts of automotive travel in the trans-Mississippi West by such able and eloquent guides as Hamlin Garland and William Dix. But the most effective guide of all is Blodgett, whose superb introduction to the volume—and to each carefully made selection—is a valuable roadmap through the existing scholarship on American automotive tourism in the first half of the twentieth century. This book should find its place on the shelf of everyone interested in the cultural history of the modern West, and in the glove box of every contemporary automotive traveler who wonders what the journeying experience was like a century ago.”—David M. Wrobel, author of Global West, American Frontier: Travel, Empire, and Exceptionalism from Manifest Destiny to the Great Depression“Peter Blodgett’s Motoring West is a TripTik through the enthusiasm, past the awe, over the excitement, and around the challenge experienced by the first automotive pioneers into the beckoning West. Thoughtfully assembled and skillfully introduced, this book re-illuminates the romance of the road that so seduced early-twentieth-century Americans.”—Terence Young, author of Building San Francisco’s Parks, 1850–1930

About the Author Peter J. Blodgett is the H. Russell Smith Foundation Curator of Western American Manuscripts at the Huntington Library and author of Land of Golden Dreams: California in the Gold Rush Decade, 1848–1858.

Early Motorcar Historical Writings By Richard Lottridge A fascinating collection of essays published between 1901 and 1910 on the subject of motoring from east of the Mississippi to the west coast. The recently invented automobile, the merits of inflatable or solid rubber tires, what equipment to carry, what to wear, and journals of actual motor trips. It is the beginning of the Car Culture, which we are still in: travel at the time and route of our own choice, and under our own control.

Leathernecks are respected as the elite on countless battlefields around the world; read how they have earned it.

The United States Marine Corps's history is one built on tenacity. A handful of bedraggled and unappreciated ships' guards known as Continental Marines more than 230 years ago grew to become, in the twenty-first century, a superb, multi-functional, ready-response force combining ground, air, and sea power.

With their own ships, aircraft, and special operations capability, Marines have become the most versatile, self-sufficient, all-encompassing, ready-response warriors on the planet. They fly fighter-bombers, helicopters, and surveillance planes, and are equipped with the very best weapons and gear.

The transformation has never been smooth. Besides fighting on distant shores or quelling disturbances at home, the Marines have had to battle against penurious politicians and interservice rivals. The constant pressure to be the best created a special bondâ??a fellowship of valorâ??that has made Marines determined fighters, continuously modifying their doctrine to respond to the evolving global war on terrorism.

Marines: An Illustrated History is packed full of dramatic action photographs, paintings, and detailed maps. Learn how Marines are uniquely trained in amphibious warfare and organized into highly mobile attack groups operating from specially designed ships. Not just a recap of the history of the Marines, the Corps's exploits since 2007 are profiled in an all-new chapter.

Get an up-close, personal view of why the toughest warriors in the world are proud to claim the title of United States Marine.

Good book By Luca Morettoni Java and Maven are strongly coupled, if you have worked for medium (or big) Java projects you will have used Maven!Maven has an huge number of plugins that help you on all process of application release, from testing to final packaging, the only price you need to pay is the configuration file that need to be written in XML (yes, I don't like XML).Recently Google moved the Android app building system to Gradle, that is a great tool: it can use the Maven repositories and the migration is not complicated, but the problem is that you need to migrate and learn a new system! This book is a perfect reference if you need to develope an Android application and you want (or you need) use Maven! Is full of real examples, and the authors drives you to create a pom file for a real application, giving you hints about useful plugins and configuration! Personally I didn't like so much the chapter about the IDE integration, looks like it was written much quickly compared to the other sections of the book.If you need to read (or learn) about Maven and Android project this book is for you!
