This book presents eight varied scenarios of possible global futures, emphasizing the interconnectedness of three drivers of change: energy prices, economic growth, and geopolitics. Other published global future scenarios focus on only one of these factors, viewing, for example, economic growth as unaffected by energy prices or energy prices in isolation from geopolitical conditions. In this book, Evan Hillebrand and Stacy Closson offer a new approach to scenario construction that acknowledges the codependence of these key drivers and integrates qualitative analysis with a quantitative model.

The eight scenarios represent possible combinations of high or low energy prices, strong or weak economic growth, and global harmony or disharmony across three time periods: the 2010s, 2020 to 2040, and 2040 to 2050. The "Regional Mercantilism" scenario, for example, envisions high energy prices, weak economic growth, and global disharmony. To impose numerical consistency across scenarios, Hillebrand and Closson employ the International Futures (IFs) model developed by Barry Hughes. (Interested readers can download this interactive model to alter or build scenarios themselves.) Assessing the probability of each scenario, they conclude that increased U.S. energy supply and the sustainability of the Chinese growth miracle are the most significant drivers over the next forty years.

Energy, Economic Growth, and Geopolitical Futures: Eight Long-Range Scenarios (MIT Press), by Evan Hillebrand, Stacy Closson

Review

Top-drawer scenario builders map a unique array of 'big picture' global outcomes shaped by energy prices, economic growth, and global harmony. Better still, they give the reader tools to build her own scenarios. An essential reference for experts concerned with geopolitical and geoeconomic futures.

(Gary Clyde Hufbauer, Reginald Jones Senior Fellow, Peterson Institute for International Economics)

The way the authors have integrated the International Futures model into scenario analysis is very instructive and amounts to a useful methodological contribution to the literature on scenario analysis. As an energy economist, I also appreciate that the book adds to the usual energy market forecasting exercises that take economic growth as exogenous to the energy markets and ignore political factors.

(Peter Hartley, Mitchell Professor of Economics and Rice Scholar in Energy Studies at the Baker Institute, Rice University)

Evan Hillebrand and Stacy Closson have written an interesting and original book in which they analyze several different scenarios for economic growth, energy prices, and international conflict over the next forty years in an engaging and accessible style. I recommend this book to anyone who wishes to understand the range of possible futures.

(James Morrow, Professor of Political Science, University of Michigan)

...the alternative worlds imagined by Hillebrand and Closson are useful starting points for a whole host of intriguing conceptual exercises, teaching and learning opportunities, strategic planning processes, and additional investigations into specific topics. This book clearly can be utilized as a valuable and engaging tool for both undergraduate and graduate students in a range of disciplinary fields, along with scholars and researchers working in interdisciplinary programs. If applied to its fullest potential, this book could also serve as a jumping-off point for other related scenario planning efforts. In the end, perhaps the book's most valuable impact could be in helping to expand a reader's thought processes, suggest new lines of inquiry, and stimulate new ways of approaching about the complex, vexing challenges facing the world today.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Interesting study, but of limited usefulness. By Barnabas I admit I just skimmed this book, so my review could well be considered unfair, but here's my observations:The computer program may be the best so far for evaluating long-range trends, but is unfortunately still too simplistic considering the complexity of national leaderships and international relationships. First, the treatment of the three variables chosen for the eight scenarios are based primarily on historical trends, which seems a bit questionable because communication today is so rapid that these could well be changing in the future. Second, the program keeps the variables the same in each of the eight scenarios over the next several decades, which again seems unlikely. For example the Arab Spring developments throughout the Mideast and Russia's becoming hard-lined under Putin don't seem to have been readily predicted.Nevertheless, the scenarios had some interesting results, one of which is the above 10% probability in any one year of the US being involved in a war in the two scenarios given a high probability.

In the 1960s, a team of Stanford musicians, engineers, computer scientists, and psychologists used computing in an entirely novel way: to produce and manipulate sound and create the sonic basis of new musical compositions. This group of interdisciplinary researchers at the nascent Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA, pronounced "karma") helped to develop computer music as an academic field, invent the technologies that underlie it, and usher in the age of digital music. In The Sound of Innovation, Andrew Nelson chronicles the history of CCRMA, tracing its origins in Stanford's Artificial Intelligence Laboratory through its present-day influence on Silicon Valley and digital music groups worldwide.

Nelson emphasizes CCRMA's interdisciplinarity, which stimulates creativity at the intersections of fields; its commitment to open sharing and users; and its pioneering commercial engagement. He shows that Stanford's outsized influence on the emergence of digital music came from the intertwining of these three modes, which brought together diverse supporters with different aims around a field of shared interest. Nelson thus challenges long-standing assumptions about the divisions between art and science, between the humanities and technology, and between academic research and commercial applications, showing how the story of a small group of musicians reveals substantial insights about innovation.

Nelson draws on extensive archival research and dozens of interviews with digital music pioneers; the book's website provides access to original historic documents and other material.

Review

Even as a forty-year veteran of the synthesizer industry, I learned a ton from The Sound of Innovation. While the legal and business considerations are interesting on their own, it's their intertwining with musical and technological developments that makes this story so magical. Andrew Nelson's thorough recounting of CCRMA's unique history with all the successes, failures, and tales of the weird and wonderful makes for a great read.

(Dave Smith, legendary instrument designer, Fellow of the Audio Engineering Society, and 2013 Grammy winner)

Every year brings a new crop of books promising the secret formula to innovation in your organization. Very few are based on research and evidence. By bringing to life the story of the remarkable fusion of music and computer science at Stanford, Andrew Nelson has provided a work of not only insight but also usefulness. Everyone in government, business, and academia should read it.

(Dane Stangler, Vice President, Research & Policy, Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation)

The Sound of Innovation deftly unpacks the relationship between university research, commercial interests, and new innovation-driven fields. Nelson reveals both the opportunities and the tensions that emerge at unexpected intersections, interweaving a story of entrepreneurial individuals with a rich and detailed sociological analysis. The result is an unprecedented investigation into the origins and impact of interdisciplinary innovations in the creative arts.

(Fiona Murray, Associate Dean for Innovation and Co-Director, MIT Innovation Initiative, and William Porter (1967) Distinguished Professor of Entrepreneurship, MIT Sloan School of Management)

The Sound of Innovation goes beyond many chronicles of inventive, entrepreneurial, or organizational success, in not glossing over the uncertainties, obstacles, and serious setbacks, and in offering a structured analysis of the particular, concrete instantiations of processes that reconceptualizes them in more general and abstract terms. With the aid of fresh frameworks and concepts (including 'radical interdisciplinarity,' 'informal technology transfers,' and 'multivocality'), its author arrives at important concluding insights that should be welcomed by those concerned with the formulation of public policies for science, technology, and innovation.

(Paul A. David, Professor Emeritus of Economics and by courtesy History, Stanford University; Senior Fellow, Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research; Emeritus Fellow, All Souls College, Oxford)

About the Author Andrew J. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A wonderful book about innovation, music and Stanford By Henning The Sound of Innovation is wonderful book. It is carefully-researched and well written. Nelson takes a deep dive and tracks the evolution of the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics in great detail. He shows how interdisciplinarity plays a crucial role in the emergence of innovation. The book thus holds wonderful insights for readers interested in innovation. Nelson identifies which components are crucial for innovation to take place – and how they interplay. As such the book also serves as a useful guideline for mangers who are interested in making their organization more innovative. If you are interested in “Stanford’s secret sauce”, here you can learn about it. I believe that managers of R&D departments, administrators of research institutions and universities, as well as scholars will find the book to be very useful.Of course, the book also does not simply study any innovation. Learning about innovation in sound is different from innovation in biotech or IT. Given Stanford’s salient role in musical innovation in the last few decades, the book also allow you to tracks the last few decades of evolution in musical innovation. When listening to my usual Spotify playlists after reading the book, I often asked myself which of what I was just heard was only possible to the innovations described in the book.Taken together, Nelson has picked a wonderful topic and examines with great care and expertise. You will wind this book very worthwhile your time.

Andrew Nelson's "The Sound of Innovation" is a very enjoyable read By Gareth Loy Andrew Nelson's fantastic book, "The Sound Of Innovation", published this year by the MIT Press, tells the story of Stanford's CCRMA not just from an historical perspective (though that is very valuable) but importantly, from the perspective of its history of innovation: how the musical and technological insights and research conducted there wove together with the practical realities of patents, business, and legal contracts at the intersection of Big Academia and Big Business. As someone who lived through a portion of the history Andrew covers, and I can say that his telling is pitch-perfect. He does not gloss over the difficulties, uncertainties, and tensions that dogged the whole enterprise, which makes the ultimate success of CCRMA that much more palpable. Highly recommended.

Engaging read; fascinating history; innovation primer By Adam Miller For anyone curious about where new technologies come from -- or curious about the kinds of organizations that create them -- this is a great book. Nelson tells the story of digital music in a way that mixes technical detail with engaging personal stories. Whether you’re a music outsider who’s simply interested in creativity and innovation or an industry expert with decades of experience, you’ll undoubtedly learn something new. One of the book’s best features might be the accompanying website, where I was happily surprised to find loads of video highlights and copies of original letters and other documents. I never expected to be able to read Steve Jobs’ personal emails to some of digital music’s pioneers!

Securing the Connected Classroom: Technology Planning to Keep Students Safe, by Abbie Brown, Tim D. Green

Review The book Securing the Connected Classroom addresses the need for security with the increase in technology in the classroom. It addresses the challenges of security in educational settings and provides a systematic process to address security. The book does a great job of stressing the importance that addressing security in education needs to include multiple stakeholders. As an IT professional for a large school district I understand the need for security. I recommend administrators and IT professionals read this book to gain a prospective that addressing network security is important in technology integrated classrooms. The process given is straight forward and easy to follow way of addressing security in schools in the digital age. --Stephanie Wade, Instructional Computer Tech

Good intro to K-12 Online Security By Nathan This is a fine place to start for classroom teachers or leadership starting to look at their policies for creating/revising systems for online security that fit an organizations needs and expectations. Good examples of policy on how to deal with inquiries from parents and staff. I wouldn't suggest this book to experienced leaders in ed tech looking to build their current knowledge - this is more of an introduction.

Leading Digital Strategy: Driving Business Growth Through Effective E-commerce, by Christopher Bones, James Hammersley

Review "This is for the executive who sees the opportunity in digital but who is frustrated or daunted by the practicalities of execution. Leading Digital Strategy provides us with a response, refreshingly framed in terms of the fundamental management and leadership disciplines required. It is a confidence-inspiring guide that reminds us that it is not technology, but established business best practice that drives success in the digital world. I wish I had read a copy three years ago." (Alan South, former CEO IDEO Europe)"Wake up and smell the differences in the digital world we now find ourselves in! Chris and James very successfully educate, challenge and stimulate smart thinking and practical actions. In particular, the excellent “killer questions” poke the reader into a thorough assessment of their business." (Feilim Mackle, Sales and Service Director o2/Telefónica uK)"A must-read for leaders of all levels, Leading Digital Strategy provides a clear leadership blueprint to ensure full commercial advantage is extracted from e-commerce strategy. It demystifies an area that most business leaders over thirty don't “get”. I believe most boards would benefit from reading this too, as it clearly pinpoints the key questions to ask to ensure value for money and the collection of key customer insights to underpin organizational strategy for the future. It is a handbook you will return to again and again." (Helen Pitcher, Chairman Advanced Boardroom Excellence Limited)"Moore’s law is not changing what is done in economy, but it is very significantly changing how things are done. For example, if you take modern cars today, more than 50 per cent of the budget for new cars is software. The same principle applies for selling products and services. Leading Digital Strategy is a must-read for those who want to stay relevant in the 21st century through strong e-commerce." (Jan Mühlfeit, retired Chairman Microsoft Europe)"The speed of evolution in digital business is accelerating. However digitally savvy you may be, this is a useful blueprint for business leadership in the digital age." (Doug Johnson-Poensgen, former Managing Director Corporate Banking, Barclays Bank)"A book that demystifies “digital” for business leaders. No longer can senior business leaders afford to simply delegate digital leadership in their business, and this book provides a practical blueprint by which leaders can measure, monitor and drive their business irrespective of their technical knowledge – or lack of it!" (Craig Hamer, Joint Managing Director Dews Motor Group)"This is a book for commercial leaders who are looking for a blueprint to drive their e-commerce strategy. It pulls together the key drivers for digital success into a handbook that is straightforward and easy to read. It will persuade you that e-commerce is an organizational more than a technical challenge." (David Langridge, Group Marketing Director Fitness First)"For businesses to thrive in today’s markets they need to engage effectively with digital. This book provides an effective framework that helps leaders drive their digital efforts in the right direction. It offers a blueprint that many leaders will find invaluable." (Paul Walsh, Chairman, Compass Group former CEO, Diageo)

Everything You Need to Optimize Growth Through E-commerce By Phil Buckley Online selling of goods and services (e-commerce) is a sustainable source of growth in today’s digitally-driven world. Leading Digital Strategy provides a thorough, comprehensive, and practical roadmap for optimizing customer engagement and sales through this channel.Bones and Hammersley provide experience-based guidance for all key aspects of digital channel optimization to attract, engage and retain customers through an e-commerce website: strategic purpose, business model, operating model, customer attraction, customer engagement and retention, organisation (metrics, culture, structure, capabilities) and leadership.Leading Digital Strategy is an engaging read. It is well-researched and generously enhanced with insights and experiences from their extensive and diverse client assignments. Themes of customer-centric design, change agility, simplicity, cross-functional engagement, commercial measurement and ‘test and learn’ optimization are well demonstrated. Two features I found very helpful are located at the end of each chapter: killer questions and leadership agenda. The former are questions that identify sources of optimization and the latter provides leadership actions to realize these opportunities (that can lead to growth).Although the authors experience is mostly with medium to large-sized organisations, I can see small businesses equally benefiting from these resources. In fact, I am redesigning my business website following the Good Growth methodology.Once I finished reading Leading Digital Strategy, I reviewed it again to capture the extensive notes I had made. This is a sign of a must-have book to drive performance. Leading Digital Strategy is the must-have resource to optimize your e-commerce channel for greater customer insight and growth. Buying it is the first step to realizing these benefits.

Now comes Lisa See’s highly anticipated new novel, China Dolls.   It’s 1938 in San Francisco: a world’s fair is preparing to open on Treasure Island, a war is brewing overseas, and the city is alive with possibilities. Grace Lee, an American-born Chinese girl, has fled the Midwest with nothing but heartache, talent, and a pair of dancing shoes. Helen Fong lives with her extended family in Chinatown, where her traditional parents insist that she guard her reputation like a piece of jade. The stunning Ruby Tom challenges the boundaries of convention at every turn with her defiant attitude and no-holds-barred ambition.   The girls become fast friends, relying on one another through unexpected challenges and shifting fortunes. When their dark secrets are exposed and the invisible thread of fate binds them even tighter, they find the strength and resilience to reach for their dreams. But after the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor, paranoia and suspicion threaten to destroy their lives, and a shocking act of betrayal changes everything.Praise for China Dolls  “Superb . . . China Dolls: A Novel, by Lisa See

From Booklist The lives of three young Chinese-American women—Grace, Helen, and Ruby—intersect in valuable and often violent ways in pre-WWII San Francisco as they shed their drab former lives to become glamorous entertainers at the city’s rising hot spot, the Forbidden City nightclub. Despite their divergent backgrounds, a mutual desire to shatter the cultural stereotypes that doom them to lives of familial subservience feeds their ambition to prosper in a world in which the definition of success changes minute by minute. Though they’ve taken a “one for all” vow of eternal loyalty, each harbors secrets that cause a pervasive atmosphere of distrust to simmer just below the surface. When Ruby is revealed to actually be of Japanese heritage and deported to an internment camp, their friendships and fortunes suffer a mortal blow, one that only deepens as the war rages on. In her impeccably researched and distinctive historical saga of desire and ambition, betrayal and revenge set amid the glitz and debauchery of burlesque entertainment on the “chop suey circuit,” See (Dreams of Joy, 2011) again lavishly explores the thorny intricacies of female friendships. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: The alluring setting of always-popular Lisa See’s latest work of women-oriented historical fiction will be vigorously promoted in print, radio, and online as the author embarks on a 10-city tour. --Carol Haggas

The women’s story explores burning questions about the possibilities of friendship, the profound effects of betrayal, the horrors of prejudice and the nature of ambition—especially female ambition. . . . These Asian artists were true pioneers, breaking ground, chasing vast dreams, subverting stereotypes simply by appearing onstage against the odds. Here, in China Dolls, they have found another stage of sorts, another place to rightfully shine.”—San Francisco Chronicle   “China Dolls is [Lisa See’s] most penetrating since Snow Flower and the Secret Fan.”—The Seattle Times   “A spellbinding portrait of a time burning with opportunity and mystery.”—O: The Oprah Magazine   “[An] impeccably researched and distinctive historical saga of desire and ambition, betrayal and revenge . . . Disappointing in Language, Character and Narrative By s.r.cohen I was very excited to read China Dolls for two reasons; I have read and really enjoyed Lisa See's other books, and I was intrigued by the quote, attributed to Buddha, before the title page..."Only three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the truth." I THOUGHT this meant I was about to embark on a novel of discovery of long buried and fascinating secrets. I wasn't. I found this book to be so far below the standards of other books by this author, I often wondered if she had REALLY written it; the style of writing and quality of language usage were a disappointment. Although the story itself...three young Asian women living in San Francisco before, during and after WW2 while trying to become nightclub stars... had promise, so much of it was just too incredible. For example, the three women meet and, within 5 minutes, become best friends; Helen, who has led a very sheltered life in her family's compound, has never danced in public, let alone taken a dance lesson...and yet, after her new friends show her a few steps on the sidewalk, she passes the audition and gets a job in the night club show. I also found the characters to be too simplistic, shallow and under-drawn...at times, the three women seemed more like three 7-year-olds "playing grown-up." There is such a disconnect between these women and the characters of Snow Flower and the Secret Fan or Peony in Love. The same goes for the general style of narrative; there is one paragraph in particular where Helen is describing their Christmas celebration which was so simplistic as to be almost juvenile; "I gave Grace rouge; she gave me a hat. I gave Eddie a necktie; Grace gave him a scarf. Eddie gave me a one pound box of candy." The telling of the narrative was a constant and continuous recurring cycle of ups-and-downs/ happiness/ jealousy/ envy/bitchiness...over and over again. ..Helen and Ruby were friends and Grace was left out; then Grace and Ruby were friends and Helen was left out... I finished reading this book ONLY because I needed to write this review. If this had been a library book, I would have returned it unfinished...and I RARELY don't finish a book that I have started

"Snowflower and the Secret Fan" and "Peony in Love" were my top two favorites, but now I have a third; "China Dolls." So entertaining, informative(did you know that Ed Sullivan was a gossip columnist before he ever had this show?")as well as humorous and heart wrenching.Helen, a Chinese born girl, has moved with her family to San Francisco's "Chinatown", living in a giant compound with her parents and 7 brothers along with their wives and children. Ruby comes from Japan to Chinatown passing for Chinese in a time that most of the United States and China hate Japanese. Grace, deeply scarred emotionally and physically by a violent father, escapes from Plain City, Ohio to find her dreams as a dancer in Chinatown. All meet by coincidences and become fast friends. All want to be entertainers and the story of their attempts line this well written novel with intrigue. The trio hold secrets within them that lead to some disastrous consequences and strain within their close knit bonds. The writing flows with conversations that make the reader feel as if they are right inside the pages following the trio as they tour the country with their singing, dancing and fan production.(Sally Rand style) The facts that are revealed educated me to the prejudices of the times.(1930's thru 1940's) and how hard it was to be of any nationality besides "white."Great effort and well worth the read!!

Lightweight melodrama By Steve Long curious to read one of Lisa See’s many novels, I chose China Dolls immediately when it became available as an advanced copy. As I read on and on into the book, however, I kept wondering what the fuss was all about. While it was an easy read, it was also a lightweight, soap opera of a story. The story is told in revolving narratives by the three main characters; a trio of broadly painted clichés; the naïve small town girl, the tough, wise-cracking girl, and the traditional, conservative girl. They never emerge as more than two dimensional; their actions and choices telegraphed, and the interaction between them juvenile. How odd that over the course of three hundred plus pages, the author never manages to breathe life and realism into her creations. The story largely takes place in the Chinatown dance club circuit amidst the growing storm in Asia that eventually comes to our shores at Pearl Harbor. It follows the show biz lives of three dancers Helen, Grace, and Ruby. As a historical novel, the names and events drive some of the plot, but are in essence little more than backdrops for the melodrama. While the book addresses complex issues such as race, xenophobia, child abuse, the horrors of war, and sexual orientation, they are never really explored on a deep level. I was disappointed that the author gives these complex issues a superficiality that renders them mere accoutrements to vainly flush out the thin characters. In the absence of long-winded expository passages, China Dolls reads quick enough and there was enough of a plot, even if generic, to keep me going up to the predictable ending. Just the same, when the end did come, I was glad to be done. Not a ringing endorsement for a book. Due to her enormous popularity, I find it hard to fathom that this novel is typical of the author, but there are too many other books to read to waste time verifying.
