Benjamin V. Root

Benjamin V. Root has been a member of the Matplotlib development team since 2010. His main areas of development have been the documentation and the mplot3d toolkit, but now he focuses on code reviews and debugging. Ben is also an active member of mailing lists, using his expertise to help newcomers understand Matplotlib. He is a meteorology graduate student, working part-time on his PhD dissertation. He works full-time for Atmospheric and Environmental Research, Inc. as a scientific programmer.

About the Author Dr. Drake is a Professor in the Department of Cell and Molecular Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics at the Medical University of South Carolina and SmartState Endowed Chair in Proteomics. He is an experienced protein biochemist and glycobiologist, with particular expertise in tumor biology and biomarker discovery from clinical fluids and tissues related to urological cancers and other cancers. He obtained his Ph.D. in Biochemistry at the University of Kentucky with Boyd Haley, generating multiple nucleotide sugar photoaffinity analogs for use in the study of glycosyltransferases. More extensive glycobiology training was done in post-doctoral work with Alan Elbein, and he began his academic career in Dr. Elbein’s department at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Currently, his research focus is on direct analysis of glycans and glycolipids in tissues using state-of-the-art MALDI mass spectrometry imaging approaches. Complementary glycopeptide mass spectrometry and metabolic labeling targeted approaches are being done to identify specific glycoproteins involved in the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition.

I know of no other book on the market that does such an effective job in identifying the many risks that face leaders in the fast-paced information security profession. I think this book is really an essential read not only for managers and executives in the information security profession, but also for programmers, IT program managers, and others working in the fields of information security, privacy, biomedical engineering, and healthcare—fields that are fusing together as the information technology systems of more and more healthcare organizations strive to create and adopt fully interoperable yet secure systems. Most people in these fields understand how much of our most intimate personal data is now stored on these systems, but they don’t always fully appreciate the risks to the security of this information. Large-scale data breaches, like those seen in the past year at several major US retailers, are now routine occurrence. Those who lead the teams of information technology professionals that develop, maintain, manage, and update the systems that are meant to share our personal medical data with authorized people in some organizations, but shield it from others, face huge challenges. Sadly, after spending many years working in this industry, I have discovered that many executives and managers are unaware of risks that could lead to the compromise of the data that they are charged with protecting. I’ve seen many others cling to management and IT development practices that have become outmoded in just the past few years. This book does an excellent job identifying the many risks that leaders in this ever-changing industry need to be aware of, as well as describing strategies to effectively manage those risks. Truly an excellent work.

This book is easy to follow and it is extremely timely with the increase of hackers searching for medical data. As the author points out, medical organizations across the world are switching to electronic medical records. Computer security is not always a high enough priority during the process to electronic records; easy and fast access to medical information often trumps security. One reason thieves covet medical data is because it has more lasting value than other types of information. Medical records, often contain both identification information, such as Social Security numbers and financial information. I would highly recommend this book to any person interested in becoming more knowledgeable about his or her healthcare information and privacy matters. There are very few books on this subject and none have really changed how much we collectively think about healthcare data and privacy--this book has the ability to do that.

Surviving the digitalized era is not natural to most of us. One of the best things about this book it is easy-to-read and provides sound principles. It is a wake-up call on protecting healthcare data and the balance for information security and privacy today.

Finlayson For any serious student of counterinsurgency, whether civilian or military, this is an essential book to have in your library. Donovan does in one short book what thousands of other writers have attempted to do in volumes - he provides a "how to" guide to conducting counterinsurgency operations using his extensive experience as an advisor during the Vietnam War. When I read his book, I kept nodding my head in agreement with each point he was making and saying to myself, "If only our leaders had listened to this man when we went into Iraq and Afghanistan, the outcomes might have been far more positive." Written in a fluid and entertaining prose, each point he makes is backed up with personal anecdotes and useful and practical guidance on how to address and resolve each problem normally faced in a counterinsurgency campaign. I give his book my highest recommendation. It is simply the best book on this subject I have ever read.

It is clearly the product of an organized mind. For the general reader, an understanding can be gained for why we are so often mired in ugly international interventions with outcomes very uncertain. For the professional who has direct interest in counterinsurgency, this book would seem to me to be an excellent platform for organizing ones thoughts when planning, or evaluating ongoing and future counterinsurgency programs. What we need to plan for, what can go wrong and what to do about it are laid out in clear steps. “Counterinsurgency” draws heavily on the author’s Viet Nam experience and extrapolates that into the present and the future. His war experience, coupled with his academic credentials, lends a great deal of credibility to the detailed methodology he lays out for evaluating and planning counterinsurgency programs.The book has the style of a handbook rather than an academic textbook, and contains the careful reflections of someone who has “been there and done that”. Our government gives us cause to despair that it will never learn when and how to use military intervention wisely. This book gives us hope that, yes, there is a way to play our part but our motives must be honest and our plan realistic.

Must read for military and civilian policy makers By Mike McMunn With this book, Mr. Donovan presents a well-reasoned examination of the opportunities and perils of a nation’s decision to engage in counterinsurgency warfare. Using his boots-on-the-ground experience as a counterinsurgency infantry advisor in Vietnam, he thoughtfully and thoroughly explores the reasons for counterinsurgency warfare, the efforts that must be made to make such warfare successful and if, at some point, it is determined the effort is unsuccessful to have the courage to bring it to a conclusion. The book presents lessons that we should have applied in Iraq or should be applying in Afghanistan.Extremely well-organized and readable for military professionals or counterinsurgency neophytes. The book should be required reading for military, state department, politicians, and CIA personnel at all levels. It seems we have not learned many lessons from our past counterinsurgency efforts in Vietnam. This book explains why that may be have happened and why we should look at our counterinsurgency experience from the perspective of Vietnam.The book is written in an ordered and logical style. It is evident that Mr. Donovan has given years of thought to his experience and that of other Vietnam advisors (presented in vignettes woven through the book) before publishing this volume and trying to make them applicable to today’s events and the predictable conflicts of the future.Although I was an advisor on the Army of the Republic of Vietnam side of operations, the book should be part of the curriculum at any advisor training school whether the schooling is directed toward insurgency operations or conventional warfare. When I went through the Military Assistance Training Advisor course at Ft. Bragg few of us knew where we would ultimately end up once in country; you could have gone to ARVN or CORDS or stayed in Saigon. I ended up in an ARVN Infantry Division in III Corps. All of the things written concerning advisor selection and training I found to be universal. I wish I had the benefit of this book before being deployed.I heartily recommend this book. For former advisors, it will also be a walk back in time remembering those events (both bitter and sweet) we shared with our comrades and our counterparts.

The story will keep you on your toes and there are many twists and turns, but there are a few instances where the wrong names were mentioned and I had to reread for clarity. However, I still enjoyed the book and I look forward to the sequel.

I just feel it was all over and somethings that happened were super dramatized and were not realistic. I probably will buy part 2 just because I want to know what happens. Not the alien thing, but the alien-BW thing. I haven't read to many of those types of book. So it was good to read one that had substance. This is the story of Antash who is a humanoid stuck on Earth and Jalicia a earthling. Antash is nursed back to health by Jalicia after crashing to Earth. The plot flowed, there was danger, adventure and of course love. And the chemistry was just right. I felt that I could actually see what was going on in the story. Maybe in my dreamworld I will encounter something similiar!

It captured me starting with the vivid scenery that was depicted in my mind from the details within the story. It was romance, mystery, and the thrill of an adventure that was just out there. I related to the reality base of the story of sacrifices for the ones we love and how it can leave a dream deferred. It is just wonderful when life happens, love has a way of turning things around. Well done!!

Antash lands on earth is is hurt and Jalicianurses him back to health. She lkearns that his world is at war and that both of their lives are in danger. Even with the threat that is hanging over their heads they both can not fight the growing attraction between the. This was a good read with a good pace. I hope to read more about the two leads if this becomes a series.

Trying to pick up the pieces and go on is proving to be hard for each of them. Nina lost her sister, Gray lost the love of his life. Grieving is never easy for anyone involved. Moving on is never easy either. Lisa Mondello did a beautiful job of creating an atmosphere where each individual character is trying to make the best of a tough situation. I loved how the story ended up come full circle and the characters ended up gaining what they needed from the most unexpected and overlooked of places. His Dakota Heart is an emotional heartwarming tale about appreciating the things that you have, not what you've lost. I received a copy of this story for an honest review.

Gray McKinnon has had a hard time moving on after his girlfriend was involved in an accident that left her in a coma two years ago. He doesn't think he will ever find love again until Nina Hendrix comes back to town. Problem is it's Nina's sister that is in the coma.Great read that deals with these two struggling with their feelings and the guilt they feel. Another excellent book in this series. I highly recommend it.

Following the Casablanca Conference in January 1943, at which the Americans refused to back Britain's plan to invade the Dodecanese Islands in the Aegean, to be followed by an invasion of the Greek mainland, a weakened British attempt was made with disastrous results. The Americans wished to concentrate all their forces in capturing Sicily and then invading southern Italy. In this first comprehensive account of aerial operations over the Eastern Mediterranean/Aegean, the first chapter covers the disastrous Hurricane attack on Crete (Operation Thesis), an attempt to divert Axis attention from Sicily; subsequent chapters deal with British landings on the islands of Kos and Leros when Spitfires vainly attempted to hold the Luftwaffe at bay. Meanwhile, Beaufighters flying from North Africa and Cyprus roamed over the Aegean attacking shipping and aerial transports with success but at a heavy cost, until the Germans withdrew from the Aegean and the Greek mainland. In addition, specially modified Spitfires are detailed to combat pressurized high-altitude Ju 87 spy planes used by the Luftwaffe based on Crete, and the Fleet Air Arm with its Seafires, Wildcats and Hellcats over the Aegean. Also, the book includes many firsthand accounts from both British and German aircrew extracted from official reports and memoirs.

López Book follows the usual Cull style; no nonsense and straight to the facts, but with a good balance between official and sometimes dull information, and colorful personal accounts.If you are looking for poetry, go somewhere else; if you are a serious war buff and want to know how the air war over the Eastern Med went during 1943-44, this is a book for you (and the reading does engulf you, too!)

OK, but- By Jim Atkins This has some excellent pilot stories from RAF and RN flyers, and covers a little known (and preferably ignored by the British military of the time) part of history. Too much of it is a recital of serial numbers and pilot names lost in action. This obscure page in history deserves some more background, to put this British defeat into perspective. Far too many good men gave their lives to little purpose here.

When on every other 'front' the Germans were losing, in "The Aegean" the British were getting their butts (consistently) kicked by the Luftwaffe. The British (mostly) fighting without 'allied' assistance lost to the Germans. This is an interesting (ignored) piece of history the British would rather forget. Another of Winston Churchill's (costly) mistakes.

The author credited many Delta images to his own collection that were copyright Delta, and did not credit the Delta Museum. Need to do better next time!

By Sid It's a great book and has a lot of relevant and valuable insights in the world microservices however the Kindle version completely ruins it. It's almost impossible to refer to the diagrams because they are illegible.A lot of the concepts haven't been spoken about in other, more popular books such as the chapter on microservices patterns. Also one of the few books that speaks about CQRS.

Disappointing By Lior Bar-On Mostly an aggregation of old / known ideas, all presented on the most basic level.No new ideas, no new insights.The book may be useful if you try to make sure you understand the concept of Micro-Services, just be aware that some common options (e.g. Bulkhead, API Proxy) are presented as facts of Micro-Services implementation - while it is actually "just another implementation options".
